It has been a very good first half of the year and we’re hoping that we can all finish the semester in strong fashion. A few highlights worth mentioning include the fact that once again this year we had student representation at the Honor Band and Honor Choir festival held at Northwest Nazarene University. Jillian Nielson, Mike Griffin, Qim Tol- man, Haylee Richardson, Josiah Bowen, Miriah Richardson were selected to participate along with other students from Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho. The girls finished second in league and had a first place finish at the dis- trict tournament in John Day. Our football team completed their season with a first place finish in the High Desert League for the third consecutive year and they were the inaugural champions of District 1 earning another state playoff berth. The boys won their first round state playoff game against the Ione Cardi- nals, their second round game against the Yoncalla Eagles, their semi-final con- test last week against the Dufur Rangers and have advanced to the state cham- pionship game this Saturday against the Sherman Huskies. We want to be sure to thank all of the local farmers for making it possible to play the game against Yoncalla on a great field. A dozen or more local farm- ers, brought their machinery up and cleared eight inches of snow off the field so that the boys could have a great playing surface. THANK YOU very much. What a great community. Kevin Purnell, high school principal and district curriculum director, presented the Adrian School District Report Card for 2013-2014 to the board at our last meet- ing. Copies of the school report card can be obtained at either school office. Our students scored better than the state average in all levels and areas except one. In most categories, Adrian students met or exceeded expectations and were well above their state of Oregon counterparts. It is an exceptionally positive report. Our students, teachers, administrators, and support staff are to be commend- ed. Not only is Adrian a great place to go to school, but academics are our pri- mary focus. Simply put, our students do very well in the classroom. On another front. The high school football team will be playing in the state championship game. The game will be at Hermiston High School on Saturday, No- vember 29, at 7:00 p.m. MST. Hopefully we will have a good showing of sup- port. Adrian had about 100 fans at the semi-final vs Dufur. Seniors and Parents of Seniors Christmas break is a great time to begin working on the FAFSA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Go to www.fafsa.gov to begin the process, you can use estimates of your resources and income until your tax information is available in January. The sooner this process is begun the better chance you have to get federal student aid. There will also be a free FAFSA workshop in January at TVCC. I will get word to the seniors when I have a firm date. This is a free workshop where you can get help with financial aid and filling out the FAFSA. Go to www.CollegeGoalOregon.gov for more information.

Yet another month bites the dust! Or in this case, another month face plants in the snow and snow angels. We are delighted to be receiving snow, especially this early in the season. November 14 was our first snow day, we hope you had a great day. We are once again assisting DHS with their Foster Child Christmas Drive. If you are interested in sponsor-ing a foster child or donating money to help sponsor a child, please call Stephanie Allison 541-372-2335 for more information. Girl’s Basketball has started and we are excited for this season. Thanksgiving! The time we all get together with our family and share what we are thankful for. Have a great Thanksgiving with your family and be sure to mention that you are grateful for this great community! Erin Nielson ASB Reporter

The fourth Oregon Common Core State Standards for mathematics” process and profi-ciency” goal is: Model with mathematics. Mathematically proficient students can

apply the mathematics they know to solve practi-

cal problems in everyday life through modeling.

They are comfortable about making assumptions

and approximations to solve problems, knowing

these assumptions and approximations can be

refined if needed. They can identify important

aspects of the practical situation and map these

into models that may contain diagrams, flow

charts, formulas, scatter plots, two-way ta-

bles, etc., that are analyzed to draw conclusions

that are interpreted in the specific context. If this

does not work the mathematically proficient stu-

dent can modify the original model or build a

completely new one.

Veteran’s Day Assembly A Rousing Success. On November 11

th, the Adrian School

District hosted an assembly to honor veterans. The assembly was attended by over 25 area vet-erans as well as the entire student body, staff and many people from the community. Reaction to the assembly was positive. Veterans who at-tended felt appreciated for the many sacrifices they have made for our freedom. Students learned that freedom is not free and that we owe the many men a women who have served and still serve in our mili-tary a great deal of gratitude.

The following is a list of veterans who attended.

Roger Duncan, Newell Cleaver, Rex Franklin, Kimberly Bertalotto, Jimmy Bertalotto, Jonathan Baird, Samuel Griffin, Bruce Campbell, Mike Barraza, Jason Bertalotto, Fred Bierig, John Lax, Erin Martin, Bill Phelps, Jacob Warren, Chuck Ryan, Robert Radford, Joe Witty, Bill Ells-worth, Rob Nelson, Mike Griffin

If you are, or know a veteran who would like to attend next year, please call Aaron Mills at 541 910-6474. Please have a contact number.

Library Work Day

An automated checkout system for the Adrian School Library is coming soon. One of the next steps is to put barcode labels in the nearly 10,000 books in the library and to enter the barcode numbers in the online library catalog. Anyone will-ing to help label books is invited to come to the library on December 12 at 8:00 a.m. (if 9:00 or 10:00 works better for you, there’ll still be plenty to do!). A sandwich lunch will be served, and quitting times will be determined by individual volun-teers. If you could volunteer on another day, that would also be appreciated. It has been estimated that 250 man-hours will be needed to complete the barcoding project. Books as Christmas Gifts

Here are 2 suggestions for buying books as Christmas gifts that will also help the Adrian School Library.

First, if you know what titles you

would like to purchase, you can log in

to Scholastic Reading Clubs at

and enter this Class Activation Code:

I am writing this on the Snow/Ice Day. While working on this letter I see Eric White in his tractor clearing our parking lot of snow. He has done this for years without looking for praise. This is the type of community support our schools get.

At the first sign of snow the elementary students will show up with sleds. We are one of the few fortunate schools in the state that has a hill for students to sled on during recess.

One of the items our teachers work on with the students each year is teasing. In, “Raising Street-wise Kids,” McGruff says, “Teasing is fairly common among children. But that doesn’t make it okay. It’s important to discourage unkind teasing because it hurts feelings…and friendships. “Kids will be kids” isn’t an acceptable excuse. When teasing happens, no one ends up happy.” We should not discourage good humor that is not at the expense of someone’s feelings. I appreciate all of you parents and community members because I know you are teaching this to the children of our community. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, William H. Ellsworth

top of the page to find the books you are interested in. Set up an account and place your order. The books will be delivered to school and we will let you know when they have arrived. Orders placed by December 10 are expected to arrive before Christmas Break. The library will receive bonus points for each book you order using the above Code. I would also be happy to place an order for you at any time.

Second, if you would like to give books as a Christmas gift, but want the student to choose the books, a

book fair gift certificate is available. Come to the library (or call 541-372-2337 or Facebook message

Elma Witty) and let us know how much you would like your student to be able to spend at the book fair.

We will sell you a gift certificate that the student can spend at the book fair on January 22 and 23. Stu-

dents seem to enjoy anticipating the book fair and knowing ahead of time how much they can spend.

In the spirit of celebrating what they are thankful for, the Adrian FFA held their second annual Giving Thanks Mystery dinner and chapter meeting. Thirty-nine high school students, ten middle school stu-dents and five guests were present at the event on Friday, November 21. The dinner and meeting was held in the Adrian Ag Shop. Students laughed as they tried to order their mystery items from a menu of riddles for the three-course meal and each individual selected a kitchen utensil to dine with. Utensils ranged from whisks and flippers to potato mashers and salad tongs! Luckily every student got a good meal even though dessert may have come first. A huge thanks to all the help received from the middle school students who served the meal and parents who helped prepare and serve: Pam Cindell, Mary Jane Griffin, Jackie Wagoner, Eilene Walker, Melissa Furtado, and Simon Bayes. The meal was a suc-cess and everyone left with a full belly and a happy heart.

Before concluding the meeting, students were given the opportunity to state one thing they were most

thankful for. Adrian FFA as a whole is grateful for all the support they receive from the administration

and staff at the school and the strong community support they receive. They would also like to thank the

many brave men and women who have served for this wonderful country and fought for our freedom.

The Adrian FFA wishes you the best this holiday season and reminds everyone that those of us living in

Malheur County, really do have a lot to be thankful for!

Submitted by: Rebecca Furtado Sometimes, life can be deceiving. Andrea felt extremely comfortable with her new school and home environ-ment once she arrive to the United States. She stayed at the dorm with other exchange students and spent every other weekend at the Pendergrass ranch. Andrea suddenly found herself out of her comfort zone of the city life and living the life of a cowgirl—boots, spurs, and cowboy hat. Andrea Catalan journeyed from Aguilir De Campoo, Spain to Adrian, Oregon. Andrea stated her school en-

rollment is 500 students to a small town with a population of only 100.

Andrea Catalan is the daughter of Ramon and Esperanza Catalan. She has a younger brother named Mateo who is currently 12 and attending school in Spain. Andrea is staying with Bill and Lorine Vanchorbach during the week days and with Mike and Elisa Pendergrass on the weekends. She really enjoys staying with the Vanchorbach’s because she gets to spend time with the other foreign exchange students. She also likes to stay with the Vanchorbach’s because all they want for Andrea is to have fun and enjoy the time she has in America. When Andre goes over to the Pendergrass’s on the weekends she gets to encounter a whole new and different scenario. When I asked Andrea what she likes most about staying with the Pendergrass’s, she responded with simply two words—It’s Perfect. She said that they make her feel welcome and treat her like she is part of their family. She re-ally likes how Quincy Pendergrass has always been there for her and how well they have gotten along during these past few months. Andrea Catalan enjoys taking pictures and playing sports. She likes taking pictures because she gets to be outside and capture the moments that a lot of people miss. Andrea played volleyball for the first time this year and she absolutely loved it. She is also thinking about playing basketball, track, and her host sister wants her to try rodeo in the Spring. Andrea’s favorite color is blue or black and she also loves hot dogs, hamburgers, and cinnamon rolls. In her free time she like to spend time with her friends and family, practice basketball, and watch Greys Anatomy and go hot tubing with her host sister Quincy Pendergrass. She also likes to watch the football games because they do not have American football in Spain. Everything is different here in American than it is in Spain. Andrea’s favorite class is Photography with Mr. Johnson and her hardest class is Senior Project. Not many foreign exchange students have to do Senior Project. However, Andrea desires to graduate from Adrian High School and therefore must complete Senior Project. This class is difficult for Andrea because not only is she new to our school system she is also doesn’t know many people outside the district. However, Andrea has successfully completed the all the requirements and looking forward to the end of the semester. The ranch life has definitely been a learning experience for Andrea. She now knows the enormous amount of

work people do on a ranch. From feeding animals, cutting wood for winter, cleaning pens and feed troughs,

fixing fences, moving hay, and all the other ranch related duties, Andrea loves helping out at the ranch. She

even found the courage to ride a horse, but does not plan to enter any rodeo in the near future—“that’s

Quincy’s fun, not for me. I just like to watch..”

Submitted by: Aaron Mazac Growing up, caring and tending to horses, it wasn’t long before Emilee gained a deep passion for all animals, big or small. Senior project gives you the opportunity to explore multiple career fields that you have taken an interest to. Emilee’s first choice in careers was to become a vet, followed by small business management, and fish and wildlife. Emilee chose veterinarian for her first career choice because she said that ever since she was a small child, she had a passion for animals. She plans on pursuing her first career choice as a veterinarian. Emilee job shadowed the Homedale Vet Clinic, the Treasure Valley Animal Clinic, and the Ontario Animal Hospital for her main career choice. Her favorite job shadow by far was the Homedale Vet Clinic. She said that it was a friendly environment for both people and the animals. The animals such as sick puppies, horses, and cats were treated as if they were human beings. Emilee’s project advisor is Ms. Chamberlain Emilee’s physical project was a pet care day. This pro-ject involved teaching young children how to properly take care of their pets. Emilee chose this for her physical project because she thinks that anyone who owns a pet should know the basics to maintain and take care of it too. Ms. Meyers advised this physical project. After Emily graduates from high school, she plans on moving out and waiting a year before attending college.

She wants to go to college at the Treasure Valley Community College to get the basics completed before mov-

ing on to a larger college. Emilee’s advice for underclassmen is to not procrastinate because you run the risk of

not completing your tasks if you wait too long.

Style is in every aspect of our lives, girls are all about their clothes, athletes are all about their shoes, and barbers, well, they’re all about the hair. Anthony Hamilton once said, “Being a barber is about taking care of the people.” Senior, Emmanuel Dominguez plans on doing exactly that after high school. Entering senior project many students have no clue what they want to do after graduation, but Emmanuel entered this year with a game plan in mind.

Emmanuel decided on Barber, Business Management, and

Coaching for his three career options. Focusing mainly on the

barber industry Emmanuel shadowed multiple businesses. His

favorite shadow by far was with Sergio Garcia at 208 Fadez in

Nampa, Idaho. He enjoyed this shadow because he got a hands

on opportunity that motivated him further. As for the Business

Management aspect he shadowed Sherri McCoy at The Orchard

House in Marsing, Idaho. He enjoyed this because he got to cook

and speak with the workers. This gave him a glimpse into the

Page 8: A D R I A N S D . C O M D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 4 N E W S L ...adriansd.com/Adrian_School_District/Newsletter/December2014.pdf · Superintendent Message High School Principal A D R

Business Management field, which he really liked. His favorite Coaching shadow was with Gabe Fuentes from TVCC, Gabe is the woman’s basketball coach. Emmanuel got the opportunity to interact with 15 of TVCC’s best female basketball players.

Since Emmanuel has always had a passion for cutting hair he knew that his physical project would revolve around that. After doing some research Emmanuel began planning the Locks of Love program for our commu-nity. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that donates hairpieces to people under 21 who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Emmanuel set a goal of 15 bundles but with the support of the community he ended up collecting 25 bundles which he proudly delivered back to Locks of Love.

After high school Emmanuel plans on going to Evergreen College in Bellevue, Washington for his Barber’s

license. While there he plans on marrying his high school sweetheart and starting a family. He also intends on

opening his own Barber shop in the future. Emmanuel’s advice to underclassmen is, “Enjoy high school and

remember, you’ll never be better than the class of 2015!”

We’ve all heard the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” but when your doctor is as sweet as senior Betty, you wouldn’t mind tossing that fruit away. Betty, from Hangzhou, China, our international student takes that to the next step. Betty intends on pursuing medicine as her career because after her grandmothers passing, from renal failure, she has been strong-minded to make it into the medical field. Her first job shadow was with Hailey, a physician’s assistant, at Malheur Memorial Health Clinic in Nyssa, OR. This was Betty’s preferred job shadow since Hailey was very explan-atory, and Hailey even contacted her director in the PA program to help Betty arrange to enter the medical school that she wanted to go to. Hailey was very considerate and taught Betty a life lesson. “The most important thing about being a medical professional is not about just treating peo-ple it’s about being kind to the patients”. PA Hailey said to Betty.

The other job shadows Betty attended were at: Saint Al., with Dr. Davis – a surgeon; Dr. Page at Malheur Memorial Health Clinic; Mr. Edwards in the career of civil engineering CK3,LLC; she also shadowed Danny Cleaver in Business management. And her last job shadow was at Kaleidoscope Pediatric Therapy in Boise, ID, shadowing Karen and Katie.

Also helping out the public in Malheur County, Betty put on the Mammogram Bus Program to benefit the wom-en in our community wanting to get tested for breast cancer. “1 in every 8 women has breast cancer so I want-ed to assist the community. Breast cancer is one of the most severe problems in America,” says Betty.

Mrs. Gordon and Mrs. Allison have been a great help to Betty during her senior year, by being her advisors. After all the help that they have done for her she has decided to major in Biological Science, or Biomedical Science to prepare her medical schooling for a PHD degree or a Master’s degree in the field of a surgeon, physician, Physician’s assistant, or a pharmacist.

“Time management is very important you need to start your job shadows and senior project during the summer

and be very organized,” said Betty. “Also, be censer at your job shadows and pay very close attention!”

In a small community, such as ours, one person takes on many roles. Your history teacher could end up being your basketball coach. The people you meet at a young age end up being your mentors in the long run. Senior Morgan White wants to take coaching to the next step by teaching young kids his favorite sport, football. Morgan started the summer of his senior year coaching a football camp for the kids in our community. He be-lieves putting on this project will make our HDL champion reputation stay with us for a long time.

Entering the job shadow portion of senior project, Morgan had determined that coaching, machinist and electrician. After a job shadow to TVCC for coaching, Morgan went on four other job shadows. Morgan job shadowed a couple electrician companies. One of the job shadows was at Apple Valley Electric, and the next job shadow was at Vale Electric – Morgan has an electri-cian occupation in mind if his coaching career or his machinist profession doesn’t work out for him. The job shadows for being a machinist was with the Parma Company – shadowing there to go into the welding career. And he shadowed Michael Moran. Morgan said the job shadow with Parma Company was the most interesting to him. Mr. Mills – Morgan’s senior project adviser and Mrs. Gordon – his physical project adviser, have been a huge help to Morgan throughout his senior year. Morgan also thanks Coach Billy, his

physical project mentor, for his football knowledge and helping him run a successful camp. After Morgan graduates high school he would like to wait a year before attending college and he doesn’t quite

know where he wants to go yet or know exactly what he wants to do for a living. He is considering working for

his dad on the farm and seeing which way the big green tractor plants his seeds.

Adrian School District #61 Condensed Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

October 9, 2014

Members present were: Ryan Martin, Paul Shenk, Neil Allison, Jake Speelmon, and Casey Walker. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 8:00 p.m. by Board Chairman, Ryan Martin. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag.

Adopt Agenda The agenda was amended to add action item e) Achievement Compact. Motion was made and was seconded to adopt the agenda as amended. Motion carried unanimously. (Casey Walker had not yet arrived.) Student Reports/Requests Sundee Speelmon, Student Body Representative, reported that the senior project events, Rachel’s Challenge and Fatal Messages were well done and enjoyed by the student body. The FFA participated in the soil judging competition, placing second and having three judges in the top ten. The American Red Cross Blood Drive is tomorrow, as well as, the St. Alphonsus Mammogram buses. These were organized as senior projects. Homecoming Week is next week. There will be spirit activities throughout the week for the students. The parade, commu-nity pep assembly, bonfire and powder puff football will be held Thursday, and the football and vol-leyball teams will play Jordan Valley on Friday. There will be a first aid training on October 17, 2014, which is a senior project. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held the evenings of October 22 and 23

rd. Eighteen people will be attending the Oregon Association of Student Council’s (OASC)

Fall Conference in Seaside on November 1 – 4, 2014. There are home games this weekend. (Casey Walker arrived.) Elementary Principal Report Mr. Ellsworth reported that the Toolbox Project is going well. The Eastern Promise program is underway. The middle school football team is a work in progress. The middle school volleyball has finished their season. The Elementary received an Above Average Rating on the Oregon School Report Card. Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up. The en-rollment numbers are holding steady. enrolled at the high school. There is a College Fair in Ontario on October 28, 2014. The district and state volleyball tournaments will occur before the next board meeting. Our volleyball team is in a position to do well. There has been a second inspection done at the dormitory; a walk through by one of the weekend host parents. It is time to reinvest some money in to the maintenance of the dorm and replacement of furniture and household items. Superintendent Report Mr. Mills reported that he and Neil Allison had attended the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) Fall Regional Meeting in Vale. Some of the topics they expect to be discussed during the 2015 legislative session are: inter-district agreements and open enrollment, funding for full day kindergarten, increasing the facility grant. District administrators met with Greg Jackson from PACE, our property and liability insurance provider, on the sexual misconduct pro-gram awareness and training. If the district complies with the components of this program we will receive a five percent reduction in our premiums next year. The Malheur County Marine Deputy will begin serving as a School Resource Officer on an itinerant basis throughout the county this winter. Initial estimates of school funding for next year say that we may be able to expect a two percent increase in funding for next year; however, we will get a clearer picture of this as we go through the year. Our scores on the School Report Cards are above the state average and other county schools. Financial Report Darla Witty presented a balance sheet as of September 30, 2014. By next meet-ing she will have an updated picture of the projected estimates of general fund receipts and ex-penditures for the year. A question was asked about the vehicle replacement schedule; we have been contributing about $20,000 per year and will have about $75,000 in the fund at the end of this fiscal year. Consent Agenda Motion was made and was seconded to adopt the September 11, 2014 minutes as presented and to approve payment of bills as listed in the amount of $278,437.69. Motion car-ried unanimously.
