The Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics has listed problem-solving strategies that parents can suggest when working with the inevitable problems their student encounters in math classes. These strategies include the following. Act it out. Choose the method of computation. Determine reasonableness. Draw a diagram. Eliminate possibilities. Find a pattern. Guess and check. Make a list. Make a model. Make a table. Solve a simpler problem. Use an equation. Use a formula. Use a graph. Work backwards. The 10 worst problem-solving habits suggested include the following. Trying to do it all in your head, not writing anything down. Arbitrarily choosing a strategy. Staying with a strategy when it is not work-ing. Giving up on a strategy too early. Getting fixed on a single strategy and trying to use it for everything. Not asking yourself, “Does this make sense?”. Being afraid to ask for help. Not checking your answer. Not noticing patterns. Going through the motions instead of thinking. Practice. perseverance and thinking seem to be key components related to successful problem-solving. T.S.

I believe that until you have a senior student living in your home, you cannot truly appreciate how busy they are or the amount of mail they now receive! If you are a parent of a senior, you really need to be encouraging your child to stay on top of their work. There are many deadlines to be aware of: SAT and ACT tests, early application deadlines for colleges, scholarship deadlines and even Senior Project deadlines! Parents of sophomore or junior students, this is a reminder that your child will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 16

th. This test presents an opportunity for your child to prepare for the SAT

and possibly earn a National Merit Scholarship. Each sophomore and junior student has already received a study guide to help prepare them for this exam. Please take the time over the next three weeks to encour-age your child to spend a little time each night looking over the study guide!

K-8 Principals Office

Students of the Month—September

We are enjoying your students. They are working hard. This year we are having Parent/Teacher conferences early so we may communicate with parents about any problems impeding a student’s learning and facilitate a solution. Middle School Athletics has started. There is much to be learned about working and being part of team. Our community has been a good example of how to pull to-

gether in good times and in times of tragedy. I am happy to

be part of this community.

This year all library books are being checked out through Adrian’s imple-mentation of the Koha Library System so it is easy to tell how many books are checked out each day. In the first 5 weeks of school, 2024 books have been checked out. So far the most books checked out in a single day was 149. The average number of books checked out on regular school days is 96. Books for this year’s Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) at elementary, middle school and high school levels are now available in the library. Stu-dents who plan to participate in the OBOB program this year may want to begin reading the books now so as to compete effectively at the regional contest in March. In fact, some stu-dents started reading the books last summer. A used book sale was held in the li-brary during parent-teacher confer-ences in September. If you didn’t get to browse through the books then, feel free to visit the library at any time to investigate the books that are for sale because they are no longer needed in the library. Any withdrawn book may be purchased for 25 cents and for $1.00 you can get 5 books (1 bonus book!). In addition to the story time for pre-school children held each Tuesday at10:30 at the library, this year the program ABC Music and Me will be presented on the second Wednesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Adrian School Library. Children aged 2 to 5 are the target of the program sponsored by Grow EO to support parents in their task of growing strong children. Please spread the word about this valuable resource for par-ents/caregivers of young children

Once again the Oregon FFA is partnering with Les Schwab to host a food drive during the month of October. The Adrian FFA is implementing a 3-part plan to optimize their impact in this state-wide activity. The first component is nearly complete as chapter and student body members have been gleaning local onions and potatoes to give away to community members and programs, neighboring school districts and even the Oregon Food Bank. Thanks to the generosity of local farmers and Giant Produce in Parma, over 40,000 pounds has been collected and dispersed locally so far. Student hours and total pounds have been documented and this total will be submitted to the Oregon FFA as soon as the program gets underway. In addition, chapter officers will be implementing a food drive to collect non-perishable food items and also a “Changing Hunger” loose change drive in the K-12 grades. Within the K-8 classes, the top class will receive an ice cream sundae party and the individual from each class who brings in the most pounds of food or greatest dollar converted pounds of food will receive a prize! In the high school, the top three contributing students will have the opportunity to win free milk for a month! Watch for more details to come! In other news, Adrian members recently participated in the District Dairy Judging Career Development Event (CDE) hosted at Dairylain Farms of Vale. The advanced team finished 3

rd and Thayne Schulthies

was tied for the fifth high individual. In the beginning contest the Adrian chapter was fifth and Maricruz Robles was third. The next CDE for Adrian students is Soils judging the end of September. Next month, the Adrian FFA members will be hosting a night at Spooky Lanes, a local Halloween venue. Thursday, October 15

th will be FFA night where local members will be running the event and a portion of the

nights proceeds will go to the FFA Chapter. Mark your calendars and plan to come out to Spooky Lanes on this date to support our local FFA members. More information to come!

Everyone has a dream in life but how often does one pursue it? Dennis Dick decided to pursue his dream of experiencing the American lifestyle by becoming an exchange student.

Dennis traveled to America from Hamburg, Germany—population 1.7 million. His dad, Eugen is employed as an I.T programmer (computer genius) and his mother, Katharina, a care-taker, working with individuals who need assistance. Den-nis’s parents are originally from Russia but moved to Germany and started a family. Dennis has a brother, Alex, and a sister Lea.

Dennis is a 16 year old teenager who enjoys playing video games, his favorite being NBA 2K. He also enjoys spending time with friends, and watching movies.

Dennis is currently playing football for the Antelopes. This is his first experience playing the sport and he states “it is really cool and fun.” Dennis is being utilized as an offensive center and defensive end. Dennis’s favorite sport is basketball on a city club team, SVNA. He plays the shooting guard position but states he can play any position. Dennis has played on the youth program for six years.

When Dennis first arrived here his first thought was how much smaller Adrian was than Hamburg. Although it is small Dennis said he likes all the beautiful country land and how open every-thing is. He likes the fact that in Adrian here everyone knows each other and are very nice and welcoming.

Dennis mentioned the major difference between attending schools in Germany and Adrian is “in Germany, students stay in one classroom and the teachers go to the different rooms for instructing.” He said school days are shorter in Germany and due to no school sports, there is more free time. Dennis speaks 3 languages, Russian, German, and English. He believes the Russian to be the most diffi-cult.

Dennis stated he misses his family, friends, and the delicious Russian dish pelmeni (a dumpling dish with various meats). . Dennis lives at the dorm with six other young men during the week and his host-parents are Kevin and Heidi

Purnell for one weekend a month and holidays.

Pau is from a small city in Catalonia (Spain) named Cardedeu. His city has a population of 17,000 resi-dents. He traveled all the way to America so he could spend a year living like an American teenager. Gratefully he was placed in Adrian. We all know that some students can be disappointed with the size of our town and our school, but not Pau! Pau’s first impression of Adrian, was “So small, but so beautiful.” Pau is 16 and currently a member of the junior class at Adrian High School. For his exchange year he plans on participating in football, basketball, and track. His favorite is basketball, he plays it back in Spain. He has played on a several club basketball teams since the age of six. He plays the forward position. Last year he was a member of the C.B.Cardedeu basketball team. Aside from enjoying his favorite American food, the cheese-burger . . . you can find Pau hanging out with friends and playing guitar. Pau is the son of Xavier Roget and Silvia Palou. His dad is the boss of all the national parks in Barcelona, Spain, and surrounding areas. Pau’s mother works as a phycologist. He has two siblings, a sister and a brother. In Spain, Pau’s school differs from ours. Unlike having multi-ple classrooms to change throughout the day, he only has one. The only things that change through the day is the pro-fessor and the class subject. Pau’s school starts at 8:00 am and ends at 2:00 pm. Some fun facts about Pau is that he is a very talented singer and guitarist, is very good at art, and speaks five languages—Catalan, Spanish, English and Italian. H Pau lives at the dorm with host parents Bill and Lorine VanCorbach and spends holidays and one weekend a month with Nolan and Nickie Shira. When Pau returns home to Spain, he plans on going to college in Barcelona to study music.

By: KrissAnn Nelson What was I afraid of? Aliens, little chilren, and teenagers. Everyone has fears. Mr. Bill Wortman greatest fear—Aliens. Strangely enough, some may consider small children and teenagers associated with the term aliens. Mr. Wortman has know his calling card in life since the age of twelve—he wanted to be a teacher. Mr. Wortman was born in Charleston, South Carolina and grew up and graduated in Black Foot, Idaho. There was no break for Mr. Wortman, right after he graduated high school he went straight to college. Playing Baseball for Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington. Then decided to finish his Education

Degree in Eastern Oregon University. Mr. Wortman stated “teaching and coaching is the two main things he likes to do.” Once Mr. Wortman received his degree he had a job offer in Teller, Alaska and accepted the offer. He began his teaching career instructing 3

rd grade reading and 4

th grade

science. Once Mr. Wortman moved to Adrian he became involved at the school district by substitute teaching and functioning as an assistant coach for the Adrian Football team. Hired during the summer. Mr. Wortman was assigned the duties of teaching our high school physical education classes and afternoon teacher for the 1

st grade class. Mr. Wortman was a natural fit

for the positions due to his athletic involvement and elementary teaching experience. A reader, Mr. Wortman understands the benefits of reading. Reading stories to the first grade class, Mr. Wortman is hopeful students will develop a love for reading, learning to comprehend stories and develop the ability to read alone. Besides coaching and teaching, Mr. Wortman enjoys reading short stories by Jack London, binge watching documentaries, comedies, and dramas on Netflix, he also loves spending time with his wife Heather and their dog Marley. Our school district is fortunate to have Mr. Bill Wortman as a new teacher. We are delighted that he wasn’t scared to come into our community and instruct students at the Adrian School District. Just be weary of the aliens—and teenagers.

Mr. Purnell shared his thoughts on getting the pictures back up in the hallway. It is too costly to get all of the pictures reframed as he would like, so he is planning to have a rail put up to hang all of the pic-tures as they are and then, as funds allow, get frames starting with the new pictures that need to go up and those that are broken and then over time replace all of the frames so they are the same.
