High School Principal
The Oregon Department of Education will be posting District and School Report Cards at the end of the month. Initial previews of the report card look good from kindergarten through twelfth grade. We have improved in some areas and have a few areas to improve on, and we are addressing those areas. The district is currently working with the City of Adrian and the Malheur County Economic Development Commission to try to secure a Safe Routes to School grant from through the Oregon Department of Transportation. Our hope is to place a sidewalk and retaining wall along Owyhee Street on the south side of the ele-mentary school. We will keep you posted. I would like to take this opportunity to announce our newest School Board
Member. Quinten Shenk has been appointed to fill the Zone 1 vacancy, replacing
Casey Walker. Mr. Shenk’s appointed term will run through June 30, 2019. The
Zone 1 position will be up for election next Spring. I would like to once again
thank Casey Walker for his years of service and Quinten Shenk for his willingness
to give of his time to fill this vacancy.
Kevin Purnell, Supt.
A note to parents: As we near the end of the first quarter, I would like to remind you that you can stay apprised of your child’s progress by using the ParentVue link on our website. If you are having trouble logging in, or if grades do not seem to be showing up, please feel free to contact the high school office personnel for assistance. If you have concerns about specific grades, please contact your child’s teacher. Our desire is for each student to succeed in his or her educational endeavors.
Activities in brief:
The co-op football endeavor continues to go very well. The team is cur-rently 3-2. Our volleyball team is currently 1-2 in league and 12-9 overall and ranked 14
th in the state. The girls are working hard and I am confident that they
will be playing like a well-oiled machine when the district tournament rolls around later this month. We are excited about the number of students we have participating in dual credit opportunities with Treasure Valley Community College and Eastern Oregon University. We have students taking: College Pre-Calculus, Writing 121 & 122, and Biology 103 & 104. It is very gratifying to be able to offer our students this opportunity to gain college credit at a very minimal cost.

Counselor’s Corner I believe that until you have a
senior student living in your home, you cannot truly appreciate how busy they are, or the amount of mail they now re-ceive! If you are a parent of a senior, you really need to be encouraging your child to stay on top of his or her work. There are many deadlines to be aware of: SAT and ACT tests, early application deadlines for colleges, scholarship deadlines and even Senior Project deadlines! Parents of sophomore or junior students: this is a reminder that your child will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, Octo-ber 10
th. This test presents an oppor-
tunity for your child to prepare for the SAT and possibly earn a National Merit Scholarship. Each sophomore and junior student has already re-ceived a study guide to help prepare
for this exam. Please take the time over the next week to encourage your child to spend a
little time each night looking over the study guide!
We have a great school! This was reinforced when we have had more than one substitute teacher say we have the best kids. They have been to a lot of schools and think we have one of the best if not the best.
Our Middle School Volley ball has had a productive learning year. The Middle School Foot-ball team has been awesome.
We are looking forward to another great month. Thank you for your support, William H. Ellsworth K-8 Principal
Adrian FFA has been very busy since the beginning of the school year. We have been prepping our corn maze for the fall season, practicing for the upcoming district dairy judging contest and participating in district FFA officer training and leadership camp. We were very proud and excited to take first place at the district rituals contest, for the second year in a row, with this year's officer team. Many friends were made and we brought back many new ideas to our chapter. At our last FFA meeting we elected our greenhand officers and enjoyed a breakfast burrito bar. The greenhand officers are: President, Conley Martin; Vice President, Gavin Bayes; Secretary, Maddie Kellems; Treasurer, Toby Clow; Reporter, Adan Batista; Sentinel, Irving Lopez; Historian, Riley Griffin. They will be learning the duties of FFA officers and growing in the roles that they will play in the future. Thank you all for your continued support of our FFA chapter! We are very excited for this year! Claire Wagster, Adrian FFA Chapter Reporter
It was a busy week at Adrian high school with homecoming activities of dress-up days, power-buff volleyball, powder-puff football, and the annual homecoming parade and community pep-assembly. The freshmen class won top honors for homecoming week. They also defeated the staff in the power-buff championship game—ouch! The court crowned their king and queen during halftime of the football game and everyone had a fantastic time at the homecoming dance, hosted by the sophomore class.
Homecoming Court (l-r): Sophia Hartman, Donovan Faulconer, Shayla Griffin, Peerapong Ruangpang, Maddie Clemens, Sully Ward, King Cole Kennedy-Gouch, Queen Roby Young, Valentin Bauer, Clara Windolff, Melina Kunze, and Rene Munoz.

ing was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Adopt Agenda It was proposed to add action items 6(b) Accept Resignation of Board Member Zone #1, 6
(c) Authorize Adrian Scholarship Fund Account signer, 6(d) Resolution 18-19.2, 6(e) Fall Coach Extra Duty Contract Recommendation, and 8) Executive Session. Motion was made and seconded to adopt the amended agenda. Motion carried unanimously.
Student and Personnel Communications Student Reports/Requests There was none. Staff Reports/Requests Athletic Report: Athletic Director Aimee Esplin reported that the district will
be dividing high school and middle school athletic duties, and recommends that Billy Wortman be given a Middle School Athletic Director extra duty contract. She reported that at registra-tion, students have shown interest in a cross country team. Boys have competed in the past, but this year there are a number of girls interested as well. AHS will add a sport this season, and has a parent who is interested in being a volunteer coach for this season. The district feels that this is a sport that students could really benefit from. The district will consider a middle school program in the future. Varsity volleyball practice this week is at 6 am, with 19 girls practicing. The practices will move to afternoons with the start of the school year. Currently middle school practice is scheduled for morning, but will change the schedule if necessary. Middle School volleyball practice begins Tuesday, August 21
st, 6 am. Billy Wortman reported
that there are 23 football athletes on the roster this year; 17 varsity and 23 junior varsity. August 31, 2018 is the first varsity contest at 4pm in Dufur, Oregon. He is looking forward to a great year, with a nice mix of student athletes. There is a parent meeting scheduled on August 22, 2018 at 6 pm, to inform parent of rules, times and scheduling.
Elementary Principal Report Mr. Ellsworth reported that the Open House/School Carnival is scheduled for August 16, 2018. Title I required information will go to parents at the open house. Title I is the largest institution in the United States for funding schools. Adrian Ele-mentary, grades K-8 is a Title I school. Other Title programs were also explained and infor-mation was distributed. The middle school has received 100 planners for students. Ap-proximately the same amount of students have registered this year as last; there are no split classes this year. Ms. Garrison will teach all the 5
th grade students, but because of
the large class size, will have a designated paraprofessional to assist her. Superintendent/High School Principal Report Mr. Purnell reported that in-service begins tomorrow with the licensed staff. On Friday, there will be a staff luncheon, and the school board members are invited to attend. 87 students have registered for the high school. The state school fund is based on student ADM; this year the district will graduate a smaller class, but the incoming freshman class is large. The teacher schedule may shift and change, as the district finalizes student schedules. The first day of school is August 20
th, and board members are invited to greet and shake hands as students enter the building on the first
day. The new student information system Synergy is being implemented, but training has been painful because of poor communication from the company. Other district have had the same experience. Staff has been paid hourly to train on the new system. Padding and side baskets have been installed in the new gym. Installation was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, which delayed the floor refinishing. The district is hoping to be finished with all construction and on the floor in the new gym on Monday, August 20
th. The weight room equipment has been ordered. The football light project is in planning mode, and the
district would like to map out the location of the new track before staking the new lights. This year there are
three home football games; with one home game being played in Jordan Valley. The district is hoping for four home games next year. There are many projects that have been accomplished from the summer pro-ject list. Mr. Purnell will be meeting with a representative from the city of Adrian to discuss a safe route to school project, to designate where the city needs sidewalks, lighting and retaining walls. The economy is strong in Oregon, and we will likely see an increase in state school funding next year. There is a special training for school boards available in September and October. Mr. Purnell met with a committee to discuss if the old library could be used for a community food bank. Every six years, AdvancedEd audits the district for accreditation. The district will be under audit this year. Financial Report Jennifer Nielson provided a summary of receipts and expenditures June 30, 2018. There was no financial report this month due to the timing of the financial audit. 4) Public Comment There was none. 5) Consent Agenda Motion was made seconded to adopt minutes from the July 12th, 2018 regular board meeting and approve bills.
