Readers will be interested to know that my daughter Kathy Carey was not the only family member to be honored this past week by Punahou School. I am proud to say that on Tuesday, the Punahou Alumni Association presented my sister Jean Rolles with the Charles S. Judd Humanitarian Award. Formerly known as the Hawaii Humanitarian Award, this prestigious honor is given to a Punahou alumnus or alumna who has made outstanding contributions to the community in Hawai‘i. As Outrigger’s vice president of community relations since 1998, Jean represents our company in the community. But beyond her duties on Outrigger’s behalf, she also does an enormous amount of humanitarian work in her private, personal capacity. As will be evident from the boards and organizations listed below, all of which benefit from her enthusiasm, dedication and generosity, Jean’s life is devoted to serving others. Kathy Carey Inducted Into Punahou Athletic

Punahou School honored Kathy Carey this past Monday, inducting her into its Athletic Hall of Fame. She and 17 other former Punahou athletic standouts were recognized that evening not only for their achievements on the field as teens, but for what they have gone on to do throughout their lives in athletics, community activities, leadership roles and other achievements. It was a memorable night

attended by many friends and family members, including David Carey, Connor Carey, Shannon Carey, Patrick Strassmann,JeanRolles,JennyandRobbyKelley,LindaJane Kelley, Bitsy Kelley, Colleen Heyer and Judd Klinger, and Estelle Kelley and Jason Weber. Kathy, who is the spouse of Outrigger® CEO David Carey and, of course, my daughter, did not intend to have athletics play a major role in her life. It just sort of happened.

When she was a senior in high school, she wanted to play soccer, but there was no girls’ team. So she tried out for a position on the boys’ team and made the cut!

Punahou added a varsity women’s soccer team the following year, 1975, but Kathy had already graduated and goneontoStanfordUniversity.There,shewentthroughthesamedrill–nowomen’ssoccerteam,tryoutforthefreshmenmen’s team, make the cut, have a great season, the school adds women’s soccer the following year as a club sport.

Of course, there was no funding, even at Stanford, so the women’s team members shared Cardinal jerseys with the men’s freshman team. That was all right except on days when both teams played and there was no time to wash the jerseys between games. “You just hoped the

His responsibilities include providing leadership and coordination of the Asia-Pacific sales and marketing functions, developing and implementing sales and marketing strategies, as well as managing key customer relationships. Mark started, June 5, 2013 (Asia-Pacific time) and is based in the Phuket, Thailand, Executive Office, reporting directly to me.

Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run 2013By Danette Bolosan

May 24, 2013, Outrigger Enterprises Group (OEG) ‘ohana participated in the 27th Anniversary of the Troy Barboza LawEnforcementTorchRunforSpecialOlympics Hawai‘i. The run began at FortDeRussyandfinishedatUHLesMurakami Stadium.

OEGhasbeeninvolvedintheLawEnforcement Torch Run since 1988. Today, all 50 states and over 47 countries participate. The Aloha State raised more than $450,000 last year and since its inception, the Torch Run has raised $4.3 million. The monies raised on the islands stays here to continue the efforts of making year-round sports training and competition available to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

More than 1,000 runners from state, federal, city and county law enforcement, all military agencies and, of course, Outrigger’s finest participated in the event. We at Outrigger were proud to run alongside these men and women who help keep our islands a safe place to live, work and visit. The spectators along Kalākaua and Kapahulu Avenues were extremely supportive when the military runners sang cadence, but the real reward was entering the stadium as the Special Olympians greeted the runners with enthusiastic high fives!

We stayed in your hotel at Waikiki Beach Walk, March 2013. My wife and I can not pay enough compliments. That facility and staff were exemplary. You helped make our stay excellent. The breakfast buffet was exceptional. The ‘happy hour’ was exceptional. The rooms were excellent. If Hawaii was not so beautiful we may have never left your hotel. Your staff was incredible. They accommodated our every need and then some. They were friendly, helpful, polite, knowledgeable, and many other postive things. Malia Espinda was of special note for us. We had a check out time problem in that are flight home was not until 10 p.m. She allowed us to stay in our room until a later than normal check out time. This permitted us to enjoy almost another full day in Hawaii which we may not have been able to do otherwise. She is to be commended. Andrea’s Wish Comes TrueBy Talei Tora

She was diagnosed with type 1 (juvenile) diabetes when she was two months old and since then has been in and out of hospital her entire life. Being insulin dependent means Andrea Dorsey, who is now 14 years old, needs insulin to survive. Andrea and her family were holidaying at the Outrigger ontheLagoon–Fiji(FOR)aspartofAndrea’swishgrantedby the Make-a-Wish Foundation which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Dorseys, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are a family of 6: Sabrina and Tim are parents to Tim Junior (22), Andrew (16), Brandy (20) and Andrea (14). “I’ve always wondered about Fiji and I’d always thought that I wanted to go there. I was thinking about Fiji a while before I got my wish and I was thinking about a lot of things and I chose Fiji as my wish,” Andrea said. “We knew very little about Fiji but through her we’re learning a lot and it is certainly a very beautiful island

and the people have been so welcoming and we really love it. I hope that this will be a very important personal experience for Andrea and our family where we will grow and learn from it. There’s so much to do,” Andrea’s mother Sabrina stated. “It is really good what they do for children like Andrea and other kids who have chronic diseases or cancer because these kids spend a lot of time in the hospital, they spend a lot of time at the doctors and that becomes their focus and their world. So being able to do something like this, I think for Andrea is widening her horizon and makes her outlook and perspective on things more positive. Especially being able to come to some place like this which she has done all the research, she’s read the books, we haven’t,” Sabrina continued. “It’sbeenwonderfulinFiji.TheZipLiningwasreallyfun and being in the rain forest is amazing. I want to say thank you to my parents for taking care of me my whole life because it is a lot to cope with,” Andrea said ecstatically. Echoing her daughter’s love for Fiji Sabrina said, “Everyone is so welcoming and helpful to us and since we’ve come we’ve been made right at home. The resort assisted Andrea in making her wish to experience a cave tour come true and through a strong partnership with Sigatoka River Safari, Andrea and her family were given a free tour. FOR General Manager Peter Hopgood said, “We are so glad to have been a part of making Andrea’s wish come true and we take much pride in knowing that we contributed to the rich cultural experience that Fiji has to offer the Dorseys. Ten local nannies have been hired by the Outrigger on theLagoon–Fiji(FOR)toboostitspremierMeimei(Nanny)Service. From humble beginnings in 2010 with only five nannies, the Meimei service now boasts a growing rank of 33.

The service, which offers parents options from 4-day, 8-hour packages, is a one-on-one nanny service offering care for children from the ages of 6 months to 12 years old.

Meimei Manager Feresi Veisa said the demand has increased over the last six months and the recruitment of new nannies is necessary to meet the growing demand. “We’ve hired great new nannies with experience in child care, and I am sure they will fit in well with our current nannies to meet the demand we are currently facing.”

The nannies are also trained in first aid and emergency responses. This is a standard skill set at the resort because well-trained, first aid qualified nannies are an integral part of the Meimei product. The Meimei nannies have similar ratings to the Australian Blue Card system that is a prevention and monitoring system of people working with children and young people and aims to minimize the risks of harm to children.

FOR General Manager Peter Hopgood said the increase in the demand for the Meimei nannies speaks volumes of the quality service these nannies provide.

“When the management decided three years ago to provide a one-on-one nanny service at the resort we knew that it would offer mums and dads a little more quiet time alone but we didn’t expect the demand to be this high,” Peter stated. “Our nannies are well trained and qualified and are just great with the kids. These new nannies are a welcome addition to our Outrigger vuvale (family). With the kids well looked after and even tucked into bed, our mums and dads can now enjoy our other premier services such as a spa therapy at the Bebe Spa sanctuary or a romantic dinner at our top fine dining restaurant Ivi,” Peter added.

The staff and management celebrated their monthly staff awards in colourful bula attire reflecting the cultural diversity of the vuvale (family). Since Mother’s Day is celebrated in May, mothers were recognized at this month’s get together for their contribution to society and in the homes of the staff.

Several outstanding staff were identified in May for their high ratings from guests and for their dedication to their duties.

The “Front of the House” award was given to Sepesa LeweniqilaofActivitiesforhisoutstandingguestfeedbackattheresortandonTripAdvisorforhisZumbapoolaerobics and fun approachable nature.

The “Back of the House” award went to Resort CarpenterLogNandanforhisall-hands-on-deckapproachfor the pool project ensuring his team completed the bamboo roofing and for constructing a ‘standout’ booth for the Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange.

The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach (OWK) has been honored by TravelAge West, the leading travel industry trade publication in the western UnitedStates,withaprestigiousWAVE (Western Agents’ Votes of Excellence) Award as “Best NewResortorMajorRenovationin Hawaii.” The recognition, based on travel agent balloting, was presented during the publication’s annual gala celebration held June 6, 2013, attheFourSeasonsHotelLosAngeles Beverly Hills.

PatsyNarimatsuandAlaniLiuhadthehonorofacceptingtheawardonbehalfofOWKandOutrigger Hotels and Resorts and were quick to share the news texting General Manager Robert McConnell and me about this wonderful recognition.

It is such an honor, especially since it was established in Dr. Charles Judd’s name. I was fortunate to have known Dr. Judd, and his son Kala was a classmate and good friend of my son Scott. There is no way I could measure up to Charlie Judd, but it is nice to be included in a category inspired by his public service.

What I need to say today is “Thank You” to Punahou, as I was fortunate to attend Punahou from kindergarten through 12th grade. I remember saving my 100 pennies in a jar to celebrate Punahou’s 100th birthday! And I also remember attending classes in some of the really old buildings such as Rice Hall and Dole Hall, and all the fun hours we had playing at the lily pond on campus.

Such hanabada days!

I will be forever grateful to Punahou for giving me an exceptional education so I was well prepared and had no problems adjusting to an Ivy League university, especially when I was only one of five girls in my class at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration.

My education has continued by being a volunteer involved with our community, and my world has been expanded by involvement in sports, art, music, theater, the environment, the judicial system, schools, military affairs, health and service organizations, and international relations. Amazingly, most of these interests tag back to activities I participated in at Punahou – such as student court, stage manager and student government representative.

And –wouldn’tyou know it? –theStanfordwomen’s soccer team went varsity after Kathy graduated. Next,KathyreceivedherMBAandDavidreceivedhiscombinedlawandMBAdegreefromSantaClaraUniversity,andthey returned to Hawai‘i. David was hired by a Honolulu law firm, nowcalledCarlsmithBallLLP.AndKathytookherfirststepintoa12-year coaching career at Punahou, beginning as the coach of the junior varsity girls’ team. The highlight at Punahou was the varsitygirls’ILHChampionshipin1989.Shealsoplayedonseveralcommunitysoccerteams,includingLeahiSoccerClub. UniversityofHawai‘iWahinecoachPinsoomTenzingencouraged Kathy to take advantage of the national coaches licensing program, and she became the first Hawai‘i female and one of the few women nationally to attain her “A” level license. Kathy then took a position as assistant coach at the UniversityofHawai‘iandhassincebeeninvolvedinallaspects of the program, both on and off the field. Her tireless work, mostly on a volunteer basis, has helped raise that program from a club activity to a Division I sport. During her time there, the Rainbow Wahine have earned three Western Athletic Conference titles (2003, 2005, 2007), one WAC Tournament championship and an NCAATournamentberth(2007).UHhonoredKathywiththe2012CharlieUshijimaAward. Incidentally,thecurrentUHWahineheadsoccercoachisMicheleNagamine,aformermemberofour‘ohana who served as a business development director for Outrigger Enterprises Group. Over the course of her soccer career, Kathy has playedonnolessthanseven–count‘em!–nationalchampionship teams. On one of those teams, she played at the World Masters Games, an international multi-sport event held every four years. Kathy has also coached with the Hawaii Olympic Development program and the American Youth Soccer Organization. In addition to her involvement with soccer, Kathy has been a great mom who raised four wonderful children: Connor, Jessie, Maverick and Shannon, and she is a terrific cook!Nextmonth,KathyandDavidwillcelebratetheir34th wedding anniversary! Congratulations, Kathy! You have made such a difference in so many lives and achieved so much. We are all very proud of you.

Kathy’s passion from high school (1975)
