On October 1, management and fellow hosts of the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort celebrated the retirement of Mia Lau. Dr. Chuck Kelley and Robert McConnell were pleased to express their appreciation to Mia on behalf of Outrigger Hotels for her hard work and dedication. Gifts of aloha in recognition of her 29 years of service were presented to her. Mia started working in housekeeping at the OHANA Waikiki West and also worked at

the Outrigger Reef Tower, the Outrigger Waikiki Tower, the Outrigger Waikiki Hobron, OHANA Waikiki Malia and finally the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort. Mia shared that it’s her time to retire and enjoy life. She is looking forward to traveling with her husband to China and visiting her son in San Diego. She has three grown children and hopes to be a grandparent one day. Mia thanked the Kelley family for the opportunity to work for the “best company in Hawai‘i.” She extended a mahalo to her supervisors for guiding her all these years and said she was grateful for her good health that allowed her to work for 29 years. With thanks and well wishes, we bid our fond aloha to Mia.

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort’s Adele Lingam crowned Miss Coral Coast Queen

Congratulations to Sales Executive Adele Lingam who was crowned Queen of the Coral Coast at a gala celebration at the Coral Coast Carnival on 26 September. Adele was also the winner in five other categories:• Miss Best Researched Topic• Miss Sarong• Miss Best Float• Miss Traditional Attire• Miss Best Talent Adele’s theme for the carnival was “Empowerment of Women.” She dedicated her win to her late father and said she was also very appreciative of the support she received from the resort, in particular the engineering team who designed her float for the carnival that was inspired by the Carnival’s theme - protecting the coral reef. The Float resembled a giant whale supported by an Outrigger canoe and surrounded by children dressed up as sea animals. As part of her win, Adele will now progress to the national Miss Fiji pageant this month, representing Fiji’s Coral Coast.

Adele has worked at the resort for the past five years. She started as a trainee, working in housekeeping, front office, kitchen and food and beverage. She was then offered a full-time position in the human resources department and is now one of the resort’s sales executives. Each night of the carnival had a different theme leading up to the final crowning of Miss Coral Coast.

TROY BOYCETroy started at Outrigger as a bell person at the OHANA Waikiki Malia responsible for greeting and assisting guests with their luggage. What he likes most about his job are the hosts he works with and guests he meets. Outrigger’s expansion to the neighbor islands, Asia-Pacific and the Indian Ocean are changes that stand out to him. In his spare time, he likes surfing, hiking, strolling along the beach and “kicking-back” with family and friends. Troy’s plans are to live life day by day and accept what it has to offer. A little known secret is that he is a clean freak. He shared that “I am so blessed to have wonderful children and there are no words to describe how proud I am as their father. They are the love of my life and I will cherish them forever.” Troy’s philosophy for life is to “be humble in everything you do. Treat people the way you would want them to treat you, love your neighbor as you love yourself and don’t think you’re better than anyone else.”

Honored to be a hostBY MARIANNE THESKEN

Kiahuna Founders Day celebration was the kick off to Paddle Three: “Caring for our Guests.” General Manager Chris Gampon reviewed the Hospitality Principles: - Honored to be a Host - Being Present - A Heartfelt Welcome - Lifelong Connections In a game show format, hosts answered questions about the Hospitality Principles, Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a values, the Kelley family and Outrigger. There were lots of laughs, inspirational moments and many great suggestions on how to care for our guests. The event focused on how we are honored to be a host - everything we can do to personally invite every guest to experience the place we call home. The key word being “home.” Our hosts are proud of Kiahuna Plantation Resort Kauai by Outrigger®. It is home to many who have been working here for almost 20 years

with Outrigger and even longer for others. Their love of Kiahuna is an inspiration to newer hosts. Spread over 30 acres, Kiahuna is rich in history. Learning more about the property instills pride leading hosts to share their love of Kiahuna with our guests. Hosts were divided into five teams for a “Selfie Scavenger Hunt.” Each team, took a photo of Roy and Estelle with them looking for clues around the property and snapping selfies along the way. It was a fun learning experience that prompted interaction between departments. Now our hosts should be able to identify numerous plants, historic landmarks and fun facts to share with our guests. Our goal is to make our guests feel at home and make our hosts feel honored to welcome guests to our ‘ohana and experience the true Kiahuna.

Welcome, Peter! BY SEAN DEE

I am pleased to join Human Resources in welcoming Peter Thompson to the Outrigger ‘ohana as business intelligence analyst, reporting to Ian Milley, director of business intelligence (BI). Peter is the primary support for all BI and analytics functions including maintaining data and customizing and refining dashboards and analysis within Opera Business Intelligence. Peter has worked recently for Leighton Lam Designs and Intova, LLC, while working on his MBA. Before that he worked for Enterprise Holdings in Philadelphia in operations as a branch manager in non-airport locations as well as production manager at the Philadelphia Airport where he developed reports and systems to reduce operational costs and forecast demand more accurately for aggressive short-term pricing strategies.

Peter is pursuing a master’s in business administration from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Shidler College of Business and holds a bachelor’s in communication from Cornell University College of Agriculture in New York. He is vice president for the Cornell Alumni Association - Hawai‘i Chapter and also for Graduate Business Student Association – Shidler College of Business. Peter and his wife Claire have two dogs and a cat, and he enjoys woodturning, woodcarving, surfing and hiking. Welcome to the Outrigger ‘ohana, Peter!

Peter Thompson

As winter shifts to the Northern Hemisphere from October through next April, extrapolating the Southern Hemisphere numbers suggests the U.S. might have nearly a million cases of ILI, the worst since the H1N1 flu pandemic in 2009. The U.S. reported 715,031 ILI cases in 2014. The only other year in the last decade that there were over 700,000 cases was in the pandemic year of 2009, reported Business Insider writer Bob Bryan. I am particularly alert to the dangers of a virulent flu pandemic because when I was training in medicine in Boston in the late 1950s, I spoke with many elderly people who lived through and remembered the 1918 influenza pandemic. Called the Spanish flu, it killed somewhere between 50 and 100 million people – 3-5 percent of the world’s population at the time – making it one of the world’s worst-ever medical disasters. The stories that many of these survivors told me were shocking. More recently, from the 1976–1977 flu season to the 2006–2007 season, annual flu-related deaths in the U.S. have ranged from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Worldwide, each year the flu kills about 250,000 to 500,000 – a quarter to half a million people.

Where to get your flu shotDuring Outrigger’s recent annual Wellness Fair, flu shots were offered to members of our Waikīkī ‘ohana. If you missed the Fair, here are steps you may take, depending on your health plan:HMSA PPP - Visit Doctors on Call in Waikīkī for a free flu shot – just bring your medical card, a government-issued photo ID and your Outrigger ID, or visit a participating pharmacy. On O‘ahu and most neighbor islands, these include Longs, Walgreens, Safeway pharmacies and Foodland pharmacies. For a complete list, please contact your HR representative.

HMSA HPH - See your physician or health center.KAISER - Contact your Kaiser physician or clinic. The cost of the immunization is processed through the participant’s medical coverage, so there is generally no charge to our employees/hosts.Members of our ‘ohana working in other locations should contact their supervisor for flu shot information.

This disease should never be confused with the common cold, some of whose symptoms it shares. The flu is far more serious. It’s deadly. Influenza viruses are always mutating (that is, evolving into new strains), so scientists have to work hard to develop a vaccine that will match the viruses considered most likely to cause the flu each year. It is always a high-stakes guessing game. The issue in today’s world is how rapidly air travel can move flu viruses around the globe. The concept is dramatically illustrated in an eight-minute TED-Ed animated video by Mark Honigsbaum (http://goo.gl/0NQnA). I urge everyone in Travel & Tourism to watch this video, as it quickly and dramatically shows how the 2003 SARS virus was spread to 29 countries in four months with deadly results. Flu shots are especially important to people who work in Travel & Tourism. Because travelers can carry the influenza virus thousands of miles in only a few hours, travel industry employees who greet guests from all over the world are at high risk of catching and spreading the flu. Also check out the TED talk by Laurie Garrett for a more detailed discussion of influenza and how it can spread. (https://goo.gl/fHHkFN) Again, I urge everyone to get their flu shots as soon as possible.

Don’t delay. This is serious business and if the analysis of William Quirk and Alexander Nowak is correct, this could be a very bad year. Flu shots are vital! I got mine.
