Remembering Jimmy BorgesBy Dr. Richard Kelley

Hawai‘i – and the world – lost a wonderful person on May 30, when entertainer Jimmy Borges passed away at age 80 after a long battle with cancer. Jimmy and I had been friends and contemporaries in Waikīkī for close to 60 years. I regret that I was not able to join others close to him last week as they gathered on the sands of Waikīkī, paddled canoes past the shore break and scattered his ashes in the warm blue waters of the Pacific. Jimmy and I were both born on O‘ahu, just two years apart in the mid-1930s. In those pre-World War II years, the economy of the Territory of Hawai‘i was dominated by agriculture. It seemed as though fields of sugar cane and row after row of pineapples were everywhere. Waikīkī had only two multistory hotels, the Moana and the Royal Hawaiian.

Outrigger “Thai’d up” at TTM+By Haydee Cruz

Outrigger Resorts in Thailand attended the Thailand Travel Mart+ (Thailand Travel Mart, plus the Mekong Region, TTM+) in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, June 8-10. The Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort, the Outrigger Laguna Phuket Resort and Villas and the Outrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort were all center stage for the Mart, which showcases the best of Thailand to an international buyer audience. Having been held for 14 consecutive years in Bangkok, TTM+ moved north to Chiang Mai this year and was staged at the impressive new Chiang Mai International Exhibition and Convention Centre (CMECC). With over 850 delegates from over 55 countries, it was a great networking opportunity for our team at the Outrigger booth: Duanphen Klinkrong, (director of sales, TLP), Kusalin Singhatham (director of sales, TSR) and Andrea Hogg (UK Outrigger global sales and marketing representative). Together we met one-on-one with over 70 partners during business sessions. As a result we were able to secure quite a few pre- and post-event site inspections to our three Thailand resorts and identified new partners from long-haul and regional markets. Visitor arrivals to Thailand for January to April 2016 totaled 11.7M, up 14 percent over the same period in 2015. This is based on a 27 percent increase in arrivals from China, now by far the largest source of visitors. There

was also a resumption of growth from Russia and a strong performance by the ASEAN countries in Southeast Asia. In 2015, Thai tourism hit a record in terms of revenue and number of arrivals. Total revenue was $US42 billion from foreign visitors, up 23 percent over 2014 and based on total visitor arrivals of 29.8 million, up 20 percent over 2014. This year the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) says it will be focusing on attracting quality tourists and less on number of visitors. Nevertheless, the TAT is targeting 8 percent tourism revenue growth this year. Thailand is now firmly a mass-market destination with a lot of competitive price squeezing. Our strategy is to concentrate on the premium visitor and distinguish us from the competition through value added innovations such as unique Outrigger Signature Experiences.

Outrigger Konotta Maldives ResortBy Elena Dementeva

The Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort (MOK) team began our ‘Konotta for the Earth’ event, organized by Resort Manager Elza Artiaga, Principal Nahida and Island Council Rameez, by visiting the local island Ghadhdhoo on the 5th of June. Prior, Principal Nahida and Consul Rameez visited Konotta to introduce and discuss their ideas about our Environmental Day celebration. MOK is the very first resort to visit their island and express interest in future social events.

The purpose of our visit was to bring environmental awareness to the school children and their parents. Our Marine Biologist Caterina Fattori gave a presentation on the environment, the ocean and OZONE Day. She demonstrated fun ways to preserve Mother Earth and held an interactive session, making art from recycled bottle caps. We also celebrated our “NO TO PLASTIC” campaign that involves hosts, students and families of the community stressing the importance of minimizing the use of plastic. After cleaning up Ghadhdhoo island and the school, a traditional lunch was prepared for our team.

Our Thailand ‘ohana joined forces and attended an educational program at the Phuket Marine Biological Center to raise awareness about the importance for marine resources conservation projects. Students of Khok Wat Mai School were also invited and thrilled to attend a sea turtle conservation educational presentation and to visit the Phuket Aquarium. The sale of OZONE T-shirts raised monies that we were pleased to present to the Phuket Marine Biological Center in support of their very worthwhile efforts.

Outrigger Mauritius Beach ResortBy Sandra Mussard

The Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort, in concert with its NGO partner, Reef Conservation, organized several on-site activities on 6th June. Guests, hosts and students from Keats College in Chemin Grenier took part in interactive activities that brought to light unsustainable impacts, poor habits and the function of wetlands.

To raise awareness of the marine ecosystem, various educational tools were on hand including NGO’s mobile marine educational unit, Bis Lamer (“Sea Bus” in Mauritian Creole), available for visits all day long. The students discovered the beauty of various coral gardens in the lagoon fronting the resort, thanks to a guided glass bottom boat tour. A very rewarding day ended with a friendly meal together at the Mercado restaurant. For more pictures of our OZONE Day, please visit: https://app.box.com/s/jb08jhdarclgfatxakdbrlr2opydbef0

Writers from Australia and Canada among first guests for Castaway Island, Fiji’s reopening celebrationsBy Donna Parkin

Journalists from Australia and Canada were among the first guests to arrive for the official reopening of Castaway Island, Fiji, on June 1 after its closure due to damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston in February. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to host Vancouver-based Alicia-Rae Olafsson from Lululemon Athletica; Angie Kelly from Fairfax Media’s Traveller; Nicola Conville from Out There in-flight magazine from Sydney; and Harrison Tippet from Leader Newspapers, Melbourne. Castaway Island General Manager Steven Andrews and his management team hosted a cocktail reception to celebrate the opening that culminated with a Meke (traditional style of dance). We experienced a Champagne beach picnic on Modriki Island, the setting for the Tom Hanks’ movie Castaway and joined other resort guests and the Mamanuca Environment Society for a coral planting activity to celebrate World Oceans Day and the first anniversary of OZONE (Outrigger’s ZONE). We also traveled to Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort on the main island of Viti Levu where we helped to relocate a giant clam as part of the resort’s World Oceans Day celebrations. Visits to Conua Primary School where the resort is helping to build a new kindergarten was a highlight with many school children bearing Canadian Flag tattoos on their arms and faces courtesy of Alicia-Rae. Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort chef excels at Le Cordon Bleu School in New ZealandBy Donna Parkin

Chef Mohammed Shameer Khan is presented his certificate of Excellence by Jenny Jenkins, general manager Le Cordon Bleu, New Zealand, and

Chef Robert Oliver, ambassador chef Le Cordon Bleu, New Zealand

Chef Mohammed Shameer Khan, a junior sous chef at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, received a

Certificate of Excellence from Le Cordon Bleu School in Wellington, New Zealand. Chef Khan was chosen to undertake the three-month course that combines the very best of new world innovation and French cuisine with the principles, techniques and artistry of French traditional cooking. “It was my first trip overseas and the best three months of my life,” he said. “I have been taught a number of invaluable skills that will stay with me forever. Each and every class was more exciting and fulfilling than the last. “I was constantly reminded of how fast-paced, exciting and ever-changing this industry is and although we were taught the traditional classics of French cuisine, we were always encouraged to bring our own creativity and flair. “It was also quite demanding as each of our sessions was judged. I pushed myself every day to get good marks. The

classes were practical and hands-on which I loved as it is the best way to learn. I was very blessed to be selected to represent the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort kitchen,” Chef Khan said.

Wyndham at Waikiki Beach Walk® Celebrates Paddles 2 and 3By Karen Villarmia

Hosts of Wyndham at Waikiki Beach Walk® came together for another successful community service event at Waikiki Elementary School. June 7 and 8 marks the fifth year that the Wyndham ‘ohana have enjoyed serving their community and preserving the environment. This special annual event allows us to celebrate, honor and practice The Outrigger Way through our Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a values. This year we planted four puakenikeni plants on the school grounds. These fragrant plants will be a reminder of the relationship that Wyndham has fostered with the community. We also picked up trash in the neighboring Pākī Park. Our partnership with Waikiki Elementary School is a wonderful example of Paddle 2: Caring for Each Other and Paddle 3: Caring for our Place. Paddles 2 and 3 >> 11

The fun under the hot sun didn’t stop, as the day just kept getting better! The team heard an inspiring presentation by Corey Campbell of Akamai Training & Consulting, a perfect time to rejuvenate hosts’ minds and bodies for the busy summer months ahead. During the presentation, we were reminded that our Outrigger values relate to our cultural connection of hosting our guests and communicating and connecting with one another. The camaraderie didn’t end in the classroom; it moved over to Pākī Park, where we played a leadership game to build on our listening and communication skills. The two days with our work ‘ohana were certainly well spent and created wonderful memories while serving our community and brushing up on our hospitality skills.

Jimmy Borges ... << From 1

It was a quiet, sleepy time in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

• Who could have predicted that a few decades later, the wood-framed bungalows that Roy and Estelle Kelley were building in Waikīkī would grow and mature into an international company called Outrigger Hotels and Resorts?

• And who would have bet that Jimmy Borges would become an internationally known singing and acting talent? He starred on stage, had his own television show, and appeared on national TV in Hawaii Five-0 (both first and second series) and Magnum P.I. as well as on shows hosted by Merv Griffin, Jonathan Winters and Victor Borge.

Jimmy Borges was known to his loyal fans as the “keeper of the flame” in reference to his trademark homage to George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Rodgers & Hart (Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart) and the rest of those legendary early 20th century composers and songwriters. Jimmy included music by these creative geniuses in every show. He and I shared a particular admiration for singer Frank Sinatra. About a year ago, in 2015, when Jimmy released a CD titled Jimmy Borges, which features him singing songs previously made famous by Frank Sinatra, including I’ve Got You Under my Skin, Old Devil Moon and Luck Be A Lady, he sent me a copy in care of his wife Vicki, who is executive assistant to David Carey, Outrigger CEO. I replied with a note of thanks and added that he probably was not aware that he had played a small but very important role in my romance with and later marriage to a fourth grade teacher from Punahou School named Linda Van Gilder. In 1978, on our first date, I had taken Linda to see Jimmy’s show at Trappers, a lounge at the Hyatt Waikiki where, for many years, he performed accompanied by pianist Betty Loo Taylor. I can’t remember what Jimmy sang that night. Maybe it was those Sinatra favorites I’ve Got You Under My Skin or Luck Be A Lady. Whatever it was, it must have had a tremendous impact on both of us. Next week, as Linda and I celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary, we’ll be drinking a toast to Jimmy Borges! God bless you, Jimmy. Rest in peace.
