Exercise: A Mood Changer
Ask a daily runner why she runs and you’re likely to hear, “It makes me feel good.” Those of us who aren’t fond of exercise of any type might find this really hard to understand. How can something that makes you sweat and pant actually make you feel good? Can Exercise Affect Your Mood?Simple answer – absolutely.Let’s go back to our running example – some might say they run when they feel stressed out. Others might say they run after an argument with a spouse. Why do they say this? Because they feel different after a run. They may feel stronger, calmer or happier; many runners report that they experience a “runner’s high” that helps them to push past physical pain and limitations. It’s a known fact that exercise releases certain chemicals in the brain, including endorphins and dopamine, which affect mood. Endorphins are the body’s natural pain killers – in fact endorphins are more powerful than morphine. They help an athlete to stay in the game and push past their pain after an injury. The Benefits of Frequent ExerciseSome scientists claim that endorphins improve immune system function and lower blood pressure. They also have anti-aging effects because they attack superoxides, molecules that threaten living tissue and are responsible for illness and aging. They can also reduce anxiety and feelings of depression and raise self-esteem. Frequent exercise has a direct effect on endorphin release – the more you exercise, the more endorphins you produce each time you exercise!Exercise also raises dopamine levels in the brain. Low dopamine levels cause you to feel mentally foggy and sluggish. Dopamine levels increase in response to a low or moderate amount of exercise. Dopamine can also help you to get a good night’s sleep unless you engage in too strenuous a workout, then it has the opposite effect of causing sleeplessness.Add Chiropractic Care for Optimal WellnessSo aside from the major health benefits of exercise, including weight control and cardiovascular health, exercise also helps to boost your mood, increase pleasure and [minimize] pain. And when you add regular chiropractic care, adequate sleep and a healthy diet – you have all the makings of a lifestyle that supports optimal wellness and wellbeing! Dr. Raymond Bunch, D.C. Jason Duarte – A Snail’s Pace Brea Sales Associate
Where are you from originally and when did you move to So Cal? I’ve lived in So Cal all my life; I am originally from Los Angeles County, now I live in Pasadena.
What got you started on running, when, where, etc.? I ran my first 5k as a 7th grader at Nightingale Middle School. The race took place at Griffith Park, and I was 73rd overall and the 14th 7th grader. Shortly after that year my 8th grade PE teacher encouraged me to try out for track when I registered for classes. Since my freshman year of high school I haven’t stopped.
What has been your favorite race and why? That’s really tough, it’s between the 1500 meter/ mile and the 5k; I’ve
loved the mile since high school. The 1500m/ mile is the perfect distance for an all out effort, while the 5k is my 1st love. The 5k represents a fast race and a chess game. In the 5k you can run fast, but you have to be smart when you time your surges.
What is the coolest place you have gone for a run? Carlsbad 5000, once you run it you cannot stop but do it again next year. During track season it has to be the Occidental College meet. I have history at Oxy; I ran high school league finals there.
What are you training for now and how is it going? Currently I am training for the 1500m, however, after May I’ll be training for some 5k roads races during the
summer. The training is going well, every Monday I have a different speed workout to develop my turnover. With each race I run my confidents is getting stronger. All I can hope for is to stay healthy for the summer.
Do you have any races that interest you? At the moment I am looking forward to the Occidental Track Invite, I’ll run my last 1500m of the season
What are your current running goals? My goals for this spring are to run under 4:10 in the 1500m, and in the summer under 16:40 for the 5k
What is your best running tip? Best running tip… “Run your race, run fast and run smart!” I normally say this to myself before the gun goes off.
Why do you run?I love the challenge of taking my limits to new heights. This sport is not easy, but challenges excite me to make me a better runner.
Jason Duarte (continued)
Any other hobbies or interests?I love sports in general; I follow baseball, basketball, and soccer. I like to see other athletes perform in their craft. What do you like most about working at A Snail’s Pace?Honestly, the staff, I think we have five great staff teams (BR,FV, MO,MV,SCP) that blend well together. I’ve been lucky so far to work at Brea and sometimes at Monrovia. These people are awesome to work with, and I hope to work with the other staff members in the future. Lastly, the comped shoes and races are a nice bonus. I never forget how lucky I am to be part of this company again.

Road Trip with the SnailsJenny Gardelle, Fountain Valley
Waking up at 3:30 on a Sunday morning isn’t usually on the top of everyone’s “fun times” list.
Nonetheless, on April 3, I did just that. Why? I had plans to meet some of my fellow Snails to go on a
road trip down to Carlsbad for the annual Carlsbad 5000.
We met at the Fountain Valley store and then piled into Rob and Sue’s Suburban and got ready to
make the hour-long trek to Carlsbad. The ride down was abuzz with “remember that time…” and “what
do you think about…” conversations across the three rows of passengers, which made for an
enjoyable and fairly quick ride.
Once we arrived and parked, we walked (and walked) to the bib pickup area and then made the trek to
the A Snail’s Pace canopy to deposit our race-mandated belongings (water, jacket for after the race,
and so on) and to chat will fellow snails—the camaraderie on the course is just as strong as it is off the
course.
The course itself was a fast, relatively flat course, and I was happy with my time. Luis, our club VP,
had an impressive PR, and I would be willing to bet others crossed the finish line happy with their
times.
We stayed until the end to see the elites run their races. The course changed a bit, which allowed the
crowd to watch them pass by a few times before racing to the finish line.
The women’s race was first, followed by the men’s race. What a sight to see! Both groups were so
fast, and they seemed to run effortlessly. I was so impressed that I already registered for next year’s
race (ok, maybe the $20 early registration fee had something to do with it).
All told, I will long remember this experience and will always look back fondly to the road trip spent with
my fellow snails to watch an impressive round of races in a charming Southern California town.

Supplicating at the Temple of SpeedRick Green, Fountain Valley
I’d like to think that I’m fast. I started running in 2011. I’ve found that as I continue to run and race, myPR times get faster. I’m familiar with the adage “There will always be someone faster than you andsomeone slower than you.” I’ve also noticed that the longer I’ve been at this, the number of peoplefaster than me shrinks and the number of people slower than me grows.
The Carlsbad 5000 bills itself as the world’s fastest five kilometer foot race. They boast of the World andAmerican records that have been set on their course. The organizers celebrate speed by giving a specialfinishers medal to the first 250 people across the finish line in each division. Because it’s a Snail Cup race,I signed up. On April 3rd, I headed down to run the Carlsbad 5000.
On race morning, I found the Snail’s Pace Running Club tent and dropped off my bag. There I met fellowFountain Valley Snails Rob Sternberg and Luis Gasca,. We wandered from the tent over to the startingline shortly before the start of the Male 40+ Masters heat. As the three of us swaggered into the startingcorral, I took a look at my corral-mates. I concluded that I would easily be one of the first 250 across theline. I reasoned that the Carlsbad 5000 was fast because the afternoon elite field runs for prize money. The race I’m about to run is the running of the old men. We were the first heat because it might take usawhile to finish.
At 7:00 am the gun went off and the herd of old men lumbered across the start line. Although I couldn’treally keep up with Rob and Luis, I ran like the speed demon that I am. I passed some people, somepeople passed me. I ran so hard that it hurt. Twenty-five minutes and forty-seven seconds later, Icrossed the finish line. Not a PR but a respectable time nonetheless. I received my finisher’s medal andan arm full of food products. Seriously, I received more calories in post-race food than I burned runningthe race.
It wasn’t until I got back to the Snail tent and saw Luis’ and Rob’s finisher medal did I realize that myfinishers medal was different. Luis’s and Rob’s medal said that they were one of the first 250. I got thestandard issue, thanks for running, the Carlsbad 5000 finishers medal/bottle opener. Sigh. Not only was Inot one of the first 250, the race records show that I was the 704th old man to cross the line. Damn! Some of these geezers are fast. I was wrong. I guess the race really does draw a fast crowd. I clearlyhave some room to improve. There will always be people faster than me. There will always be peopleslower than me. If I want to be one of the first 250 across the line at Carlsbad next year, I’d better startsupplicating at the temple of speed.
