Ariana Selix
Fountain Valley Assistant Manager Where are you from originally and when did you move to So Cal?
I have lived in So Cal my whole life. I am originally from Placentia, CA but I recently moved to Costa Mesa, CA.
What got you started on running, when, where, etc.?
My 6th grade PE teacher, Mr. Ayala, told me that if I ran the Dana Point Turkey Trot I would get extra credit. So my mom and I ran it together and that was my first official 5k.
What has been your favorite race and why?
While competing at UC Santa Barbara we had a dual mee against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at our home track. I ran the steeplechase and had been going back and forth with a Cal Poly runner the entire race. I finally outkicked her and the crowd cheered.
What is the coolest place you have gone for a run?
It's a tie between the Elwood Bluffs in Goleta, CA and The Forest of Nisene Marks near Santa Cruz, CA.
What are you training for now and how is it going?
When my runs start feeling easy I like to sign up for a road 5k and see how I place. Nothing in particular though.
Do you have any races that interest you?
I enjoy watching the steeplechase in hopes that someone might swim in the water pit.
What are your current running goals?
My current running goals are to not take my fitness for granted and enjoy the fact that I'm able to run.
What is your best running Dp?
Start slow then taper.
Why do you run?
I run because I'd hate to end a streak that I've had for 10+ years. Can't stop now.
Any other hobbies or interests?
I've started riding my road bike more frequently. I also enjoy a fun camping adventure.
What do you like most about working at A Snail’s Pace?
I get to work with like-minded people and share my knowledge of this sport/passion with the customers who are just starting their journey into running.

Ragnar So Cal 2015- “The Dirtier Dozen”
I AM A MARATHONER Catherine Pearson
Have you ever felt so sick you feel like you could puke uncontrollably all over the place while also feeling ecstatic, invigorated, and so happy you could jump ten feet into the air? I have – it happened on March 15, 2015, when I crossed the finish line of my very first marathon. Running is my drug. It takes me away from the real world, if just for a short time. I do not listen to music while I run; I listen to the sounds around me – people talking, cars zooming, birds tweeting. But most of all I listen to me: my heart rate, my breathing, my inner me that loves to sing songs that I can only remember the chorus to. I love it! When I lived in the United Kingdom I was a member of Trentham Running Club, near Stoke-on- Trent. Although when I joined I had completed many charity 5k and 10k races, I wanted to train for a half marathon – in particular, the Great North Run (GNR). The GNR is the largest half marathon in the world. The year I ran it (2006), there were over 52,000 runners. It took me almost half an hour just to cross the start line! When I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon (GNR, time 2:27:53) – and, in fact, the other five I have done since also – never, ever, EVER have I thought, “Oh, yes, let’s turn around and do that all over again!”. I just could not imagine ever doing a full marathon. Then I turned twenty-nine. Turning twenty-nine was weird for me; I could not quite believe that there was only one year left with a two at the beginning of my age. I was still in school. I had no job. What exactly was I doing with my life!? It made me reevaluate. What are my goals? What do I want to accomplish? I decided I wanted to run 26.2 miles. I had heard many people at A Snail’s Pace talk about the LA Marathon, and other marathons, and I felt excluded. I wanted to be part of the unique group that called themselves marathoners. I wanted to know how much it hurt to train. I wanted to see how far I could push my body. I wanted to fling my arms in the air under a giant digital clock and say, “YES, I did it!”. I decided to research marathons in the area. When I found out that 2015 would be LA Marathon’s 30th
anniversary, I knew that was the one for me. LA Marathon’s 30th year = Catherine Pearson’s 30th
year. It was fate, and I was sold. The training was tough, but before I knew it Race Day was here. I felt nervous and excited. The weatherman had forecast record highs and I was not sure how the heat would affect me. Whatever happened though, at least I would get a PR! My goal was to just cross that finish line. Along the 26.2 mile route I ran with and saw many of my fellow Snails: Kelly Hertzig, Brad Vargyas, and Lindsey Koeppen, just to name a few. At mile 23.2 Snail’s Pace were out in force with their tent. Gilbert Salazar brought me fluids and oranges, and
after a brief call to my husband to let him know I would be at the finish line in about 30 minutes, Lucy Salazar led me on my way and encouraged me for the next half a mile or so. The final stretch along Ocean Blvd in Santa Monica seemed like it lasted a lifetime. I could see the crowds of the finish line, but it just took forever to get to. Then I saw Ron, my loving husband, who does not usually come to watch me run but decided this was a special occasion. He had spent all morning in Santa Monica watching the sunrise, taking photographs of the day – oh, and eating a full English fry up breakfast in The King’s Head!! As soon as I saw him I went running over to get a kiss to keep me going for the last few hundred yards. I could see the look of pride on his face (I think it may have actually been more a look of relief that I had arrived and was not keeled over from heat exhaustion somewhere!). Ron obviously could not run with me over the finish line, but I also did not want to do it alone. I wanted to share the experience, so I called my Mum. March 15 was Mother’s Day in the UK and my Mum was sat at home all alone (probably tracking me on Facebook!). I figured who better to call and talk to while I cross the finish line of my very first full marathon? I used Skype video so that she could see where I was and experience the excitement with me. She loved it! It made the experience so much more special. I had seen on the giant, digital finish line clock that my time was under five hours (official chip time was 4:44) – I was ecstatic. However, the best thing about the whole experience by far is the fact that I can now call myself a marathoner. No one can ever take that title away from me. I t’s mine – forever!

As of 4/30/15
{all sport anti- chafe / anti- friction continuous spray skin lubricant} TRISLIDE is the ONLY anti chafing, anti-friction, anti-blistering product found in a convenient environmental friendly aerosol spray. Gone are the days of goopy messy hands and contaminated sticks, the continuous spray application of TRISLIDE is easy to use and safe to share! TRISLIDE is becoming the preferred ‘chamois anti chafing’ treatment for cyclists to eliminate saddle sores. For cyclists, one
application of TRISLIDE goes on silky smooth and stays on without a squishy, wet chamois feeling. It stays on for hours but doesn’t leave a greasy lube residue. Compared to others that may wash off, it is waterproof which means sweat proof! Not only is TRISLIDE great for eliminating chamois chafing, but it successfully combats blistering and hotspots on runner’s feet and all general skin chafing (inner thigh, underarm, sports bra, chest and neck). TRISLIDE also helps ease entries and causes wicked fast exits from triathlon wetsuits! For triathletes, surfers and divers, TRISLIDE is completely safe to use on all neoprene compared to petroleum or vegetable based products that will disintegrate the wetsuits. TRISLIDE is a liquid silicone based product that can
simply be removed with soap and water, will not stain clothes, and is the most innovative product to prevent chafing, blistering, irritation, and hot spots found in swimming, biking and running. Available in a 4 oz can.
• TRISLIDE comes in a convenient hygienic continuous spray application. • Non messy. Spray directly on skin. • Eliminates all skin chafing (neck, under arms, inner thigh, chest). • Combats Chamois Chafing found in cycling. • Significantly reduces hot spots and blistering on the feet while running. • Safe to use with all neoprene found in wetsuits (triathlon, surf, scuba). • Eases entries and creates super fast exits from wetsuits. • Completely sweat proof and water proof. • Lasts for hours and can simply be removed with soap and water.
Available at ALL A Snail’s Pace stores.
