Maurice Kanbar ’52is the quintessential entrepreneur.

His quest for the “new and improved”

led him to establish the first movie

multiplex known as “The Quad” in

New York City’s Greenwich Village.

Relocating to San Francisco, Mr.

Kanbar founded SKYY Vodka in 1988

— the second-most popular vodka

in the world — invented the D-Fuzz-It

Sweater Comb, and scores of other

products. A film aficionado, he

attends major film festivals around

the world and has lent his support to

independent filmmakers, audiences

and students of film through The

Kanbar School of Film and Television

at NYU. In 2001, Mr. Kanbar wrote

and published Secrets from an

Inventor’s Notebook, the proceeds of

which are donated to charity. And,

The Kanbar Foundation is a major

philanthropic entity, which oversees

charitable bequests throughout

the nation. A

SECOND PLACE:Anne Stewart ’04, Newtown, Pa.

THIRD PLACE:Jill Horan ’03, Morton, Pa.

“Comments from the jury on thedesigns were very gratifying,” accordingto Dennis Kuronen, director of theGraphic Design Communication Program, who oversaw the graphic-design submis-sions. “The judges felt the work wasstrong, with bold use of photography, andwith the winners displaying a high level of craft in presentation.”

The Industrial Design segment willget underway in April, with winnersannounced in May. Under the auspices of Gotz Unger, director of the IndustrialDesign Program, student capstone projects will be evaluated for the contest.“Industrial Design entries will be judgedby faculty members and design profes-sionals,” says Professor Unger. “Thisyear, for the first time, we will be holdingPhiladelphia University Design Week atThe Marketplace in Philadelphia. It will be a wonderful venue for all designstudents to exhibit their projects in thebeginning of May 2004.”

A recipient of an Honorary Doctor ofScience from Philadelphia University at

Commencement 2003, Maurice Kanbar’sinvolvement and generous support of the University is invaluable to theUniversity’s mission of guiding talentedstudents toward a promising future.

“If I had to choose another career,”Mr. Kanbar wrote in his book, Secrets froman Inventor’s Notebook, “I would teach introductory physics to nonscience students. I think I’d make a good teacher, and I’m sure I could get kids excited aboutthe little miracles we take for granted — talking by telephone to people around theworld, driving a car, switching on a light.Once kids understand the scientific principlesbehind these everyday acts, they see the world differently. Plus, when you understandhow things work, you can start to thinkabout improving them.”

That is, if he is not busy with a newinvention, finding a new solution to an oldproblem, off to the Venice Film Festival, writ-ing a book, or lending his support to numerouseducational, medical or arts institutions.

Maurice Kanbar ’52 is committed to get-ting young students involved and interestedin design and engineering. To facilitate thisprocess, he established The Maurice KanbarExcellence in Design Competition at Phila-delphia University. “Competitions naturallycreate an atmosphere of challenge,” Mr.Kanbar offers. “My hope is that this contestbrings attention to design and engineeringand therefore to all of the possibilities ofexploring creative solutions and marketableproducts.”

Established for the next ten years, thisannual design competition in both graphicdesign and industrial design will not onlyinspire students, but will also reward themfor outstanding performance. Award levelsare the Gold Award for first place ($2,000);the Silver Award for second place ($1,500);and the Bronze Award for third place($1,000); in both design disciplines.

The first competition was held in Fall2003, focusing on the graphic design ofpackaging for the Rex Gourmet CoffeeGrinder, a product developed by Mr. Kanbar.Among the criteria set forth for the entrieswere copy and structural requirements forthe package, point-of-purchase issues andvisual impact on display shelves. An outsidepanel of professional package designers was chosen to jury the entries. The panelincluded Alena Wheeler, Wheeler Design;Steve Perry, The Bailey Group; and MichaelO’Connor of Hanson Associates.

4 • Alumni Update Spring 2004

It is hard to believe that we are approachingthe close of another busy academic year atPhiladelphia University. It has been one of themost exciting years that I can remember — filledwith decisions that will be truly transformationalfor our University.

I wanted to take the opportunity to updateyou about what is happening on campus.

At the end of the fall semester, the Board ofTrustees approved the selection of ShepleyBulfinch Richardson & Abbott, the designers ofthe award-winning Paul J. Gutman Library, asthe designers of our new campus center. Thisnew building will be important to PhiladelphiaUniversity. We expect to break ground this yearand open the facility at the start of the 2006-2007 academic year. This building will have theamenities and services students, faculty, staff andalumni need — central gathering and meetingspace, and rooms for cultural, artistic and enter-tainment activities — all under one roof. Ourtrustees have strongly supported the constructionof this facility and have encouraged us to designan enduring centerpiece for our campus that willserve to build a stronger sense of community.

The planning process for the design of thisnew building is also providing our students witha tremendous educational opportunity. Togetherwith faculty and staff, students have been able to offer the architects and the administrationvaluable input about the proposed componentsand design of the building.

I find that I often repeat myself when I speakabout the Philadelphia University faculty. Theyare extraordinary. As you have experienced, theyare great teachers, scholars and mentors. Theyalso conduct meaningful research that benefitstheir students. This year, for instance, under theleadership of associate professor of HumanGeography Dr. Steven Dinero, the Universityreceived a $600,000 National Science Foundation(NSF) grant for a three-year economic develop-ment study in rural Alaska. Grants from the

NSF are among the most prestigious in academia, and Dr. Dinero’s award is just one example of therecognition that Philadelphia University facultyare receiving. (See page 3.)

Many colleges and universities have beenstruggling with enrollment. At PhiladelphiaUniversity, our enrollment remains strong.Applications for admission continue to rise andenrollment projections are positive. We are seeing increased demand for campus housing andare continually improving levels of retention. In short, Philadelphia University is recognized asa desirable place to obtain an education that will prepare students for rewarding careers.

Once again, I am pleased to announce thatwe will host our annual FIA Student Fashionshow at Philadelphia’s historic Academy ofMusic. This show has the look, feel and promiseof any professional runway show you might find in New York, Paris or Milan, and hasbecome one of the most exciting events in town. Tickets are now on sale and going fast. For ticket information, please call Ticket-Philadelphia at 215-898-1999 or visit online at www.TicketPhiladelphia.com. I encourage youto join us for a memorable and electrifyingevening.

As we celebrate our 120th anniversary as an institution of higher education, I truly believethat we are entering the most exhilarating andpromising time in the University’s history. I canassure you that we will continue to be creative, proactive, and thoughtful as we plan for thefuture of this great University.

Best wishes,

James P. Gallagher, Ph.D.

Philadelphia University has received a $1 million grant from the Ben FranklinTechnology Development Authority to build aconsortium promoting environmentally sounddesign and construction in the DelawareValley.

The Consortium, known as The Con-sortium for Sustainable Design and Researchof Southeastern Pennsylvania, is headed byPhiladelphia University and centered at theEngineering & Design Studio @ PhiladelphiaUniversity. Other members of the Consortiuminclude the Ben Franklin Partners of South-eastern Pennsylvania, Temple University and Villanova University. The Consortium will spearhead sustainable design, using recycled materials, solar energy and plant lifeto construct new buildings that preserveresources, save money and create safe andpleasant environments.

What is sustainable design? “That’s a termfor designing buildings that are more energyefficient,” says Christopher M. Pastore, Ph.D.,professor of Textile Engineering and co-directorof the Design Studio. “Sustainable buildingscreate less pollution, offer stronger materials, and are pretty to look at. In addition, they arebuilt with green materials that are nontoxicand are rapidly renewable or recyclable.”

“The demand for expertise in green building and design is burgeoning,” adds RobFleming, associate professor of Architectureand co-director of the Design Studio. “Rightnow, there’s not enough expertise availablelocally to meet the demands for informationabout new technologies and materials. Usingthis grant, the Consortium will augment existing research and design projects and

pursue new ones, enabling local companies toexpand their business and create new jobsthrough the adoption of green initiatives.”

The Consortium is involved in severalresearch-based sustainable projects, including:

• Energy and Environmental Design-rated (LEED-rated)buildings.

• Advantages and competitiveness of sustainable carpeting.

• Production and application of low-cost insulation.

• Utilization of environmentally sound concrete from fly ash, a waste product.

• Creation of an educational project to highlight computer-based lighting systems that adjust energy use based on available sunshine.

• Identifying alternative uses for disposal of soil generated by mushroom farms.

“Our focus is to try to repurpose environ-mental problems rather than simply to eliminatethem, so that they will actually become bene-ficial or useful in some way,” says Dr. Pastore.“And, besides developing sustainable materials,we are also working on presenting them topotential users in a way that promotes theiradoption in the community.”

A variety of funded-research projects atthe Studio gives students the opportunity toapply what they learn in the classroom to real-world problems — ranging from thedevelopment of new construction systems, digital-building simulation, and green-buildingdesign. Studio projects have increased the volume of sophisticated course materials andinstruction on sustainability. “This benefitsour architecture and engineering students inpreparing them to enter professions in whichecological and sustainable design are rapidlybecoming mainstream,” adds Fleming. “We want to educate the building and tradecommunity, too,” he continues. “A lot of what we are working on can be built right into factory-made, sustainable materials for new houses.”

Campus Plan UpdateUniversity selects architecture firm.

In a move that will significantly transformthe Philadelphia University campus, theUniversity’s Board of Trustees voted at theirNovember meeting to approve the Campus Planrecently developed by Sasaki Associates.Equally important was the Board’s approval of theselection of Shepley Bulfinch Richardson &Abbott as the architects who will design theCampus Center, one of the Plan’s focal points.Shepley Bulfinch designed the award-winningPaul J. Gutman Library in 1991.

Early in the process, the architects conducted an Open Forum with members of theUniversity community in December to discussvarious design concepts and to solicit feedback.President Gallagher and other University administrators continued to meet with neighborsduring this time and, in February, ShepleyBulfinch again visited campus to present the initial schematics to faculty, staff and students. They described preliminary plans for the buildingto be sited on the interior of the north side ofcampus, and reviewed the relevant campustypography. In addition, Shepley Bulfinch dis-cussed plans for a new recreation center andparking facility.

The Campus Plan also includes campusbeautification and, in the coming years, pedes-trian bridges that will span both Henry Avenueand Vaux Street.

The Studio is housed in a 19th-century textile mill in Manayunk, which has been restored and renovated for several new uses.

SAA HistoryThe Student Alumni Association (SAA)

was created as an extension of the initial “12 Strangers for Dinner” program that beganseven years ago, with the purpose of intro-ducing freshman to alumni mentors.

SAA board member Ralph A. Ragan ’72was appointed chairperson of the StudentAffairs and Career Mentoring Committee, and, with the support of board members Tony Vitullo ’97 and Laura Schmitt ’00, M ’01, Brandon Ewing ’02 and Lori Holencik’03, the organization was enhanced.

SAA now oversees the “12 Strangers for Dinner” program, and this year will beresponsible for the “Graduate Sendoff” on April 14. This chapter belongs to thenational organization, Association of StudentAdvancement Programs (ASAP). SAA repre-sentatives attended the regional conference inBoston in March. The combined effort ofeveryone involved with SAA has almost tripledmembership.

SAA 2004 president is Greg Hemberger’06; board officers are Tara Reber ’06, CathyLiVoti ’06 and Amy Burger ’06. A new publicrelations position, shared by SAA members

Andrew Hess ’06 and Alexis Berman ’07,resulted in this article — the first of many thatwill showcase SAA activities and highlight theefforts of alumni who give of their time andfunds to help SAA grow.

A Legacy Story Generations in families who attend Phila-

delphia University are known as “Legacies.” Is there a legacy in your family?

Meet SAA member Bernardo Margulis, from Caracas, Venezuela, a Graphic DesignCommunication major, whose father, uncle andextended family members were also inter-national students here.

Bernardo is a junior transfer student studying graphic design. Previously, he studiedcomputer science at Universidad Simón Bolívar. But, graphic design is what he always wantedto do and here at Philadelphia University he ispursuing his dream.

His dad, Henrique Margulis, was a TextileDesign major, Class of ’76; and his uncle, WillyMargulis, was a Textile Engineering major,Class of ’67.

“My dad says much has changed since he was a student,” Bernardo offers. “There ismuch more technology and he was veryimpressed with the campus.”

Already close to his family, Bernardo feelsan even stronger connection now since joiningthe University community. One of his profes-sors — Maureen Roberts, Design Foundations, also taught his dad. Peggy Goutmann, Textiles;and John Vorlicek, Design, all remember hisfather. “This has been a very happy associationfor me and my family.”

To learn more about SAA and its many opportunities for student alumni networking, please visit their new website at www.philau.edu/SAA.

Martin Zeldin, Class of 1955,received Philadelphia University’s Time, Talent &Treasure Award at an event held March 26, 2004, at the National Constitution Center.

Marty personifies the mission ofPhiladelphia University personally and profes-sionally. His life is an example of how the Powerto Do inspires the individual and benefits thegreater community.

Marty earned a B.S. in Textile Engineering in 1955. His studies included coloration, fabricdesign and textile construction, all of whichserved him well as he became one of the first textile professionals to enter the emerging textilewaste industry as the owner of a woolen spunyarn company and a textile waste export company. With partner James Jarrett, he founded MartexFiber Southern Corp., with facilities in SouthCarolina and offices in Philadelphia.

An affiliate, Jimtex Yarns, was established in1998 in Georgia. Jimtex is the only U.S. manu-facturer that recycles pre-consumer apparel wasteinto yarn for many uses.

The Zeldin Family Foundation was createdto advance the cause of women and children inneed through donations to educational programsthat promote basic needs, scholarship and expo-sure to fine and cultural arts. He also serves onthe board of the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial.

Philadelphia University was honored to recognize Marty’s accomplishments and philan-thropy with the Time, Talent & Treasure Awardwith his family and friends in attendance. Full cov-erage of the event will appear in our next issue.

Class of ’58: Leaders inAlumni Gift-Giving

When members of the Class of 1958 receive a phone call from formerclassmate, Duke Pototsky, they know it’s more than just a social call and theyrespond generously to Duke’s appeal for support. Their rate of donation has averaged over 50 percent and as high as 70 percent — so high that the class has received the Donald Partridge Award for the best participation rate towardannual giving every year since 1992. “The average rate of alumni donations in colleges nationwide is approximately 22 percent,” says Duke. “It’s clear that the commitment of our class has been exceptional.”

Duke was Alumni Board president in ’91, ’92 and ’93, and is now a boardmember. “I know everyone,” he says. “I personally call and write each member ofthe class to get their support. Sometimes, people will ask, ‘Hey Duke, do youhave the phone number for my old roommate?’ Of course I do. I’ll get that personon the line for a three-way conversation that often rekindles these friendships.”

Among the most generous of the Class of ’58 are Vic Braun, a 12-yearUniversity trustee, and Abe Salaman. Abe has played a key role in establishingthe Billy Harris Memorial Scholarship Fund, currently the University’s largestendowed scholarship, and also established the Arthur Salaman ScholarshipFund, in memory of his brother.

“It’s very gratifying when I receive letters from students who have benefitedfrom these scholarships,” says Abe. “And whenever I visit the University, I am continually impressed with all that is taking place.”

“In order to continue providing our students with enhanced libraryresources, the best in educational technology and competitive scholarships andfinancial aid, we depend on alumni support,” says John Pierantozzi ’70, vice president, Development and Alumni Relations. “Volunteers like Duke Pototsky are invaluable to the University’s efforts.”

Mann Center for the PerformingArts Site for Commencement 2004 The Hon. Marjorie “Midge” Rendell this year’s speaker.

Students participating in the May 2004Commencement Ceremony joined other members of the University community on Feb. 5for a special celebration to kick off the count-down to Commencement 2004.

President Gallagher saluted this year’sgraduates and announced that CommencementCeremonies this May will be held at The MannCenter for the Performing Arts.

The University is honored to announce the Commencement speaker will be The Hon.Marjorie “Midge” Rendell, a federal judge andFirst Lady of Pennsylvania.

Stuart Borowsky, School of Business Admini-stration, who was pictured receiving theBertrand Hayward Alumni Award at the 2003Homecoming Gala, was incorrectly listed asassistant professor. His correct title is associateprofessor of Accounting.

Kia Steve-Dickerson, of TLC’s hit show TradingSpaces, was a Textile Management andMarketing major as a student, not an InteriorDesign major, as was published.

Sharon Osbourne ’96, was incorrectly listed ashaving given birth to a daughter. (A surprise to Sharon, to say the least!) Due to a mixup ininformation notecards between Sharon andRebecca Rosner Abbott ’93, the joyous eventwas attributed to Sharon and not to Rebecca,as was correct. The corrected Class Noteappears in this issue.

…once again,Philadelphia University is poised for transformation.

SETT ING THE RECORD STRA IGHT

D e a r F r i e n d s :There is an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement on campus that transcends the

approach of spring, the culmination of a year of academic achievements or our first off-campuscommencement at the Mann Music Center this year. With the advent of the new Student Center, one senses that, once again, Philadelphia University is poised for transformation. Not only willthe Center be a place for students, faculty and visitors to engage in intellectual and social pursuits,it will also be a welcome destination for alumni to bridge the past and experience the future.

We had such positive feedback about last year’s Reunion and Homecoming Weekend, Iwanted to get a jump on reminding you that Reunion 2004 is fast approaching. Your invitationwill be in the mail soon for what promises to be a unique and entertaining weekend, Oct. 1, 2and 3, so mark your calendars now. Also, by way of a reminder, the more of us who becomeinvolved in the planning, the greater the experience for all. I encourage you to contact AlumniRelations and see how your enthusiasm as an alumni is welcomed and appreciated. This year,we celebrate class years ending in 4 and 9. As for me, this will be my 20th Class Reunion. (Ofcourse, I haven’t changed a whit since my 5th). I extend a personal invitation to you to comeback to campus and celebrate with us.

Feel free to email me at [email protected] with ideas or concerns. I look forwardto seeing you soon!

Alumna’s New Venture BreedsSuccess for Textile Design Student

For Janet Zukowski Monasterski ’84 andhusband David, the signposts on their 20-yearjourney from the world of business to an alpacafarm in N.J. included Janet’s 2000 bout withbreast cancer and David’s experience as a com-puter systems professional in New York City onSept. 11, 2001. It was then that they made thedecision to simplify their lives and headed off toVincentown, N.J., where they purchasedStanPete’s Alpaca Ranch.

As new breeders of alpacas, the source of a fiber that is highly prized in the industry, The Alpaca Breeders Association asked theMonasterskis to become involved with promotingthe industry by sponsoring a student entry for the 2004 Fiber to Fashion Student DesignCompetition.

Janet Zukowski Monasterski ’84 (center) poses withhusband David and winning student, Kelly Chaido ’04at the Fiber to Fashion Conference in Reno, Nev.

“I was thrilled with the idea that I could finally find my “connection” to my alma mater in a way that was very personal for me!” says Janet, a former Business major. “I contacted Professor Goutmann with the contest details, provided yarns for the project and crossed my fingers.”

Nine students entered and the “beautifully executeddesigns” were sent off for judging. In Dec. 2003, theMonasterskis were notified that Kelly Chaido ’04, Textile

Design, won second-place. On Feb. 4, 2004, theMonasterskis and Kelly flew to Reno, Nev., for the awards. And, on Feb. 15, Kelly visited the ranch and was interviewedby The Trenton Times. As for Janet, she will be asponsor/mentoring liaison for the 2005 competition.
