POTE’SNOTES

Nobles, Ladies, and Friends, Now that MASA and SASA are history we move into the final months of 2015 and start thinking of the holidays. My congratulations go out to the Units and Clubs that won trophies at Myrtle Beach. Participation in parades is so important to the well being of the temple units and clubs. Printed in this issue of the ACCALETTE you will find a “Suspension List”. Please take a look at the names and if you know someone on the list please con-tact him and see if we can save the Noble. We have a very large list this year that needs your attention. Membership is everyone’s responsibility and has to be addressed very seriously if Acca is to succeed. With the launching of the WebFez program some things are changing. Our dues notices have been sent to you from Imperial Headquarters in Tampa Florida. Once you get that notice and remit your dues to Acca, as in the past, we will enter the data into the system. Imperial Headquarters will then send you a “hard card” dues card. This card will be used for multiple years by using the “year sticker” from year to year. We currently have a total of 14 nobles of the 1435 members of Acca that have reg-istered on the WebFez program. I strongly encourage you to register and take a look at your data. We have only 3 unit presidents and no club presidents on the system. There are several events coming up for the members and the public to enjoy. Take a look at our web site to view the happenings. Invite a non mason or a mason to join us in the fellowship. Please try to support these events and enjoy the fel-lowship and fun with our shrine brothers and ladies. Please remit your sportsman’s raffle tickets and money as soon as you can in order to facilitate the accounting in the business office. The end of the year is fast approaching and if you are considering becoming a life member for per capita you must remember that we need your payment by December 21st. As always, let me thank those of you that are participating in our fund raising events, our hospital van drivers, committee chairmen, and the supporting nobility. You all do so much behind the scenes but trust me, it doesn’t go unnoticed. Fraternally, Ben D. “Pete” Holder, PP, Recorder

From TheEDITOR’SDESKWelcome to ACCA Shrine and the Accalette: We trust you will find the information in this issue both interesting and informative. I wish to thank all nobles and ladies for their on-going support for Acca Shrine and the Accalette. Congratulations go out to all our nobles and ladies that were able to attend and participate in our annual convention in the South Atlantic Shrine Association (S.A.S.A.) in Myrtle Beach, SC., and their wins, both in the parade and competition, during the 2015 session. Nobles, in the upcoming months you will see many activities within Acca, our units and clubs. We ask all nobles and ladies that can to support and participate in as many events as you can. Remember it’s your Temple. Visit your temple frequently, participate, take part in its deliberations and be an active, integral part of its proceedings. You and your lady are a vital part of ACCA Shrine. Self-effacing service is the highest human aim. Our Fall Ceremonial will be on Saturday, November 14th, 2015. Acca will also have an Open House the night before on Friday, November 13th. It is up to all of us to work on membership. If you know of a person that you would like to bring into ACCA now is the time to do it during our Fall Ceremonial. Lastly, as we move into November and December and this special time of the year let each of us remember those that are serving in our armed forces and those families and individuals that may be less fortunate than us. Nobles, as in any organization the key words are involvement and partici-pation. Acca Shrine will be just what you our Nobility make it-no better, no worse. Sincerely Yours in the Faith and Fraternally,

Paul W. Lanier, PP, Managing Editor

ILL. Sirs, Nobles and Ladies: Brethren, another season has come and gone. And with the season of fall’s arrival this will bring new events and chal-lenges. We have a lot of parades to celebrate the Christmas season and end of the year fundraisers for clubs and units. And we can’t forget the Fall Ceremonial November 13thand 14th. We will be Honoring Ill. Sir Paul Lanier and Lady Martha Jo. These two have worked tirelessly for many years to support Acca Shrine, so please mark your calendars and plan on attending this event. Let’s show Ill. Sir Paul and Lady Martha Jo how much we all love them and thank them for all they have done and will do for Acca Shrine. Now my brothers, since the last Accalette we have had Masonic One Day Conferrals across the state and if you had a candidate in one of these please keep mentoring these new Master Masons. We need to help our new Brothers learn and understand what Masonry stands for and how to enjoy all the Appended Bodies of our order. I know not all will join the Shrine, but we need to talk to them about all Appended bodies, and they will join the ones we love. I want to thank all the Nobles and their Ladies that attended SASA in Myrtle Beach. The attendance was down a little bit because the parade

was on Friday night. Also, just so you know, as you start making plans to attend next year’s SASA, the parade will be on Saturday followed by a beach party at the end of the parade. It was still a great time and we brought home a lot of trophies in the parade and in competitions. Even though it rained during the parade, Acca Temple was strong and didn’t falter. We paraded with pride and showed the judges that we set the pace. I would also like to personally thank the Provost Guard and the Hillbillies for putting on a great Hillbilly Luau and hotdog party and for helping get everything in line for the end of the week bash on Saturday. I really would like thank Noble Terry Nall for all his hard work he put in for our stay at the Coral Beach Resort. If it wasn’t for Noble Terry we might not have had the big ballroom to use this year. Brethren, the Fall Ceremonial is approaching quickly and we need new candidates, so please go to your Blue Lodges and talk to your broth-ers about Acca Shrine. Let’s have a great class of new Nobles in November. Also, this ceremonial will be “Bring Your Brother” weekend. Bring them Friday night to meet and fellowship with the rest of the temple. Then turn around and bring them Saturday night to the dance. All you need to do is buy a ticket and they come for free as long as they are not a Shriner. But please inform the office if you are planning on bringing someone. Registration required for guest so we can get the head count correct. Let’s work together and make this Ceremonial the biggest and best we have had in years. Your Membership team will be unveiling a mentoring program very soon so please offer your support if you can. If you want Acca Temple to flourish and grow then YOU need to go out and replace yourself. Brethren, we can grow and flourish if we all work together. Just ask

Flag Ceremony

Pledge of Allegiance The Military Salute is used when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and during the playing or singing of the National Anthem. “I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” The Potentate or designated individual will cause the Nobility to come to attention and salute at the proper time. With the audience standing silently facing the platform the color bearer, followed by escort, marches to the front and faces the audience. Escorts take positions on either side of the Flag bearer. The audience may then recite the pledge of alle-giance and sing the national anthem. Flag bearer places Flag in its stand. Audience is seated. Flag detail departs.

Pote’s Notes (Continued)Master Masons if they would like to be a Shriner and support our 22 Hospitals. I like to refer to the saying “No Man Stands as Tall as When he Stoops to Help a Child”. We do stand tall in Acca Temple with all the chil-dren we help. On a different note we, the Divan, are committed to improving the com-munications between the temple and its members, club, and units. Before the end of the year I assure you we will have an email system in place where we can keep the Nobles of Acca Shrine informed on what’s going on with your temple. We need to compile a good list to work from, so if your club or unit hasn’t emailed us a list of your members and email addresses please do so. Nobles don’t forget about the Sportmans Raffle on November 21, 2015. If you have tickets please try and sell them or purchase them yourself. This is the largest fundraiser we have for ACCA Temple. Also THANK YOU to all the nobles and ladies that have sold tickets at the Sportsman Show and at Green Top gun store. Again thank you for allowing me to be YOUR Potentate this year and I promise each of you that I and your Divan will do our best. Remember to keep in touch with your Unit/Club and your members and to let us know if there is anything we can do to help your Unit or Club. We are Setting the Pace in 2015. Yours in Faith, ILL. First Lady’s Thoughts First I would to thank the Divan Ladies and their Nobles, the Office Staff for all their help on the Red, White and Brew. It was a success and I’m happy to report we made roughly $3000. We wouldn’t have done this well if it wasn’t for all the Acca Shriners and their ladies that supported us by purchasing tickets or sponsoring this event. SASA has come and gone but it was a great time had by all. I would like to thank the Hillbillies, Provost Guard and all the ladies for the work they put in for the Hillbilly Luau and Hotdog Party and the party on Saturday. It was a lot of fun to see all the Units and Clubs get their trophies and awards. You all worked hard and it showed. I’m very proud to say I am apart of ACCA Shrine Temple. November 13th and 14th will be the Fall Ceremonial, Ill. Sir Tim and I will be Honoring Ill. Sir Paul Lanier and Lady Martha Jo. So please put these dates on your calendar and plan on attending. It will be a lot of fun. Ladies this year has been full of Fun, Love, and lots of memories that will last Tim and I a lifetime. But it’s not over yet and I look forward to seeing you all soon at the events our clubs and units have planned. Remember if there is anything the Divan ladies can do to assist your club or unit with please let us know we will do what we can.

These notes were borrowed from Anna P. Miller, Pastor of Westhunt Baptist Church; Recently I listened to a sermon on line. It was shared by a surfer who described a scary, dangerous time out on the ocean. He described the way waves come in to the shore in sets, with some being higher sets of waves and some shorter sets. On one particular day, there were occasional sets of higher waves, which for a surfer is a dream come true. But you have to be in a specfic place to be in the right setup to surf such a wave and the taller they are, the faster they come in and the further out they break. So, you have to pay attention and be in the right spot at the right time. Unfortunately, this guy did not get there! He got pummeled by the first big wave. When he finally popped up for air, he realized he was about to be submerged again. This happened three times in a row, with little chance to catch a breath and regain calm. Panic was starting to set in! This guy finally got a break in the pattern when smaller waves returned and he was able to make his way back to shore. But what frantic minutes were spent waiting for the waves to pass and settle as he was tossed in the spin cycle repeatedly with no control and no sense of which end was up. He likened this to life. Sometimes we might feel like we just keep getting put in the spin cycle and hardly have a moment to catch enough breathe to keep going. Life, it seems, continues to grow more and more tumultuous and busy though I’m not sure how that is possible. What can we do as we ride this ocean of life? 1] Remember it’s a cycle and waves don’t always come in big. There are lulls and rest in the cycles. Wait for one and don’t panic. 2] When you have an opportunity, get out of the surf for a while. Rest. Gain strength. Catch your breath. Don’t skip a chance to take a break, do yourself and those around you a favor, and keep your appointment with rest and rejuvenation. 3] Get back out there and enjoy the swells. Don’t let one sea-son spoil another. Don’t allow fear to keep you from entering the waters of life fully. For when the big wave comes again and you ride it well, it’s like nothing else! 4] Keep a friend close. It’s always good to know there’s a hand reaching out to pick you up, provide some relief, and lead you to a better spot. Summertime has passed hopefully we have gotten some rest and we are ready to face the challenges we face as a Temple. Let’s all be that close friend, always ready to stretch forth a hand to help a fallen Brother and to lead him to a better spot. God bless each and everyone and I look forward to seeing you soon. Yours in the Faith, Sam

After a couple of months off for the summer, we resumed our monthly meetings on September 9 at Hillside Family Restaurant in Burkeville. A delicious meal was served and enjoyed by those in attendance. Our club will host a screening clinic on October 24, 2015 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Centra Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, Virginia. Noble Wayne Burkhart is the event orga-nizer. Planning is now underway for our 2016 Annual Virginia Catfish Festival. Noble Robert Llewellyn will be confirming the date and place in the upcoming week. We will keep you posted as our plans evolve. Over the next couple of months, our mini car patrol members will be getting their cars ready for the upcoming Christmas parades and holding practice to sharpen their skills. Yes, the season will be here soon! Several club members attended the South Atlantic Shrine Association event in Myrtle Beach, SC during September. There was always something going on, hospitality rooms opened for meet/greet, good food, drinks and fun for all in attendance. The SASA Parade was the held Friday evening this year. The rains came just as ACCA was step-ping off in the parade so many scrambled for cover including Noble Rip Willis who was awaiting his ride in the parade. Fortunately the rain didn’t last long. We cheered our ACCA Temple participants and loved seeing Noble Rip Willis riding once again in the Hillbilly’s car. Yes, he looked fantastic! Having a toilet as his seat, he was having the time of his life riding/waiving to the crowd.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, 2015 @ 7p.m., at the Hillside Family Restaurant in Burkeville, Virginia. Noble Sonny Conner, Club Reporter

Nobles, Ladies, and Friends All, Greetings! As I write this article on a cool, rainy, autumn eve-ning, I think back, way back, to last weekend. I, along with my family, was in warm and sunny (for the most part) Myrtle Beach with the Ceremonial Cast at the 2015 addition of SASA.

Shriners, friends, sand, water, … and maybe a few libations… all add up to a wonderful time! Of course, this year we had the parade at night, which was a lot of fun. We did get a little wet from the rain, but that only lasted for a little while. My favorite part about that night, though, was seeing the float lit up with colorful lights! Man, it was beautiful! Great job to Noble Bruce Smith and anyone else who helped light that thing up! I’d like to think that those lights (as opposed to the fact that we were the only Ceremonial Cast in the parade) are what won us FIRST PLACE for Ritualistic Casts! …Well, that and our pretty faces…no? Okay, well it was worth a shot… Anyhow, it was a great time and I look forward to next year! Hey! What’s happening on 14 Nov 2015, you ask? Why that will be our Acca Temple’s Fall Ceremonial! And you know what will be great, I ask to you? If you’d come out and watch us per-form the ritual! How great will it be for incoming Novices to be able and look around the Ballroom and actually see some Shriners in the audience! Participation breeds participation! In addition to that we, the Ceremonial Cast, work really hard to practice our roles, put the stage up, get dressed up, and then perform the ritual. Please, please, please come out and support us! I look forward to seeing you there! That’s it for now. I hope everyone had a great summer and beginning of fall! Take care, treat each other with love, and always be grateful for the gifts we have been given. Sincerely, Danny Muldoon

The Caverns Shrine Club held its 11th annual Blue Grass in the Blue Ridge at a new location…the VFW Park in Luray. We thank our friends and fellow Veterans that helped provide the very nice facilities for the great event that provides tremendous support of our Shrine Hospitals for Children, Greenville and the Acca transportation fund. Attendance was on par with what you would expect because of the change in venue. It was a very successful event, however, and on behalf of Shriners Hospital for Children, Greenville and Acca transportation, we thank each and every No-ble and Lady for making it another great event, especially Kyle Miller, the Chief Blue Grass promoter for the festival.

At the festival this year, we were honored to have Dr. Peter Stasikelis from Greenville Shriners Hospital in attendance. Dr. Stasikelis is lovingly referred to as Dr. Pete because his last name is hard to remember and prounouce. Dr. Pete was the Chief of Staff for a number of years but decided he would rather have more “hands on” experience with the children than pushing paper as a Chief of Staff. He is an excellent surgeon and great speaker. His presentation to the group of fans at the festival was very well received, and he has been invited to return for our next festival. The Blue Grass in the Blue Ridge festival made a total of $21,250 for this year for the Acca transportation fund and Shri-ners Hospital for Children, Greenville with $18,250 going to Greenville and $3,000 going to the transportation fund. Included in the $3,000 was $600 cash that was plastered to the transporta-tion van as a result of the efforts of Ms Alva Bible, an avid blue grass fan and very special and caring lady who loves to support the Hospital system and transportation fund. Since she has been encouraging people to place money on the van, the total is well over $3,000. That provides a lot of trips to the hospital. All of Caverns Shrine Club are a great bunch of Nobles and Ladies and they provide great support and love for our Shrine Hospitals and our children. The picture captures Dr. Richard Redman and Ill Dennis English presenting the $18,250 to the Greenville Shriners Hospital Board of Governors. Dennis English, PP Member, Board of Governors

Greeters Unit On May 29, 2015, the Acca Greeters Unit, held a Family Fish Fry in the Acca Activity Center. The menu of fish, macaroni salad, baked beans, and hush puppies, was enjoyed by all in attendance. Even though the weather didn’t co-operate, we still had a decent crowd in attendance, as shown in the picture below. Also shown is a picture of PP & Greeters President Wayne Fifer & Past Pres. Al Rock supervising PP & vice Pres. Philip Godwin cooking the fish -who is wiping his brow from the hard work?

The weekend of June 12 thru June 14, 2015, the SASA Greet-ers Association held their Summer Planning Session in Charlotte, NC hosted by the Oasis Greeters Unit. Members in attendance of Greeter Units and their Ladies were from Acca Temple, Rich-mond; Hejaz Temple, Greenville, SC; Jericho Temple, Kingsport, Tenn.; Kazin, Temple, Roanoke, VA; and Oasis Temple, Char-lotte, NC. It was a productive meeting, selecting the incoming officers for the year 2016 which will be voted on at our Annual Meeting at the SASA Convention in Myrtle Beach on Sept. 17. Also, we went over the scheduled changes of events, with the parade being on Friday Night instead of Saturday moming as in past years. Various shopping trips and a tour to Billy Graham’s library were on tap for our free time.

In front of the Chapel at the Billy Graham’s Library & Museum The Greeters Unit and Greetettes held their annual picnic on September 25, 2015. Because of the inclement weather, it was held in Acca’s Assembly Room. There were 25 in attendance who enjoyed a meal of Fried Chicken, BBQ, Cole slaw, potato & pasta salads, baked beans, corn & butter beans and watermellon host-ed by Greeters President, Wayne Fifer and Greetettes President Theresa Fifer. Homemade cakes were furnished by Theresa Fi-fer, Mary Hattan, Betti Rock, and Doris Burton. It was a great afternoon of fun and fellowship enjoyed by all. As you read this issue of the Accalette, the Greeters Annual Yard Sale will be history. We hope it was a success as it has been in past years. Tampa Hospital Receiveda Lot of Love to the Rescue

In August, Nancy and I were invited to accompany Noble John Mroteck and his Lady Bernice of Caverns Shrine Club to Tampa, FL to participate in the donation of $6.55 million dollars to Shri-ners Hospitals for Children, Tampa. What an honor for us to be able to take part in such a wonderful endeavor. John Mroteck and Lady Bernice were long time friends with a gentleman named William A. Pettit III. Mr. Pettit owned numer-ous unique and rare antique cars in addition to fi ne china, silver, furniture and other antiques handed down to him from his mother. Mr. Pettit was an only child and had never married so there were no relatives to inherit his estate. After trying to give the money to several places without success, he asked John to suggest a place to donate his estate upon his demise. John recommended that he donate it to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Mr. Pettit agreed. He had once been a resident of Virginia, but had moved to FL so it was only reasonable that he leave the money to the Tampa Hos-pital. Mr. Pettit passed away a couple of years ago and once the estate was settled, his lawyers requested that John and Bernice take part in the ceremony of putting the plaque on the wall. It was such an honor for Nancy and me to accompany John and Bernice to make the presentation. The Board of Governors was meeting that particular day so there was quite a crowd present. Not only was it a wonderful trip but we got to know two fantastic people from Luray that we had only briefl y met before. In addi-tion, Shriners Hospital Tampa became the benefactor of a great deal of money to help support and care for our children. Dennis English, PP Member, Board of Governors, Greenville

Provost Guard Summer has come to a close and the Provost Guard is on the way to fall activities. The Major’s picnic at the home of Past Major Chris Schwartz and Lady Joelle was held on a beautiful day and a fun time was had by all. There was food and drink in abundance and sharing the stories of old times kept everyone laughing as we reminisced about the past and planned for the future of the Provost Guard. SASA 2015 was quite different this year as the Parade was held on Friday evening and initially everyone was in limbo about how to manage this change in schedule. Ultimately, it all came together and the hospitality of the units made it a successful event. On Thursday evening a Hillbilly Luau was hosted by the Provost Guard and the Hillbillies with music provided by our very special DJ – Steve Faszewski. There was dancing to the oldies and goodies – do you remember how to do the Hokey Pokey – what a sight to behold. As it turned out, the Parade went off without a hitch until the rain started, but most of ACCA’s units carried on to the end! The Victory Party was held on Saturday afternoon and there was much to celebrate. The Provost Guard received another trophy as ACCA had the Major and Jamie Poegl marching and carrying the ACCA banner. The Provost Guard has continued to provide Building Management for the various activities held at our Shine building. We will continue to do this throughout this year as it is a good way for the unit to earn money for the Children’s hospitals. It is also a great way to greet new guests and introduce them to our organization by explaining what it is that Shriners do, share our mission, and explain what we do to support our twenty-two hos-pitals. We have the opportunity to spread the word that Shriners are the “world’s greatest philanthropy”. The Provost Guard is just a few days away from our second annual fundraiser, The Oktoberfest. We are anticipating a great turnout as it is so much fun to dance to the music of our own, Sauerkrauts, and to feast on German food and German beer. The drawing for our Colonial Williamsburg gift card raffle will also be held at the Oktoberfest – best wishes to everyone as we will have three lucky winners. The Provost Guard will be participating in several fall and holi-day parades, so be on the lookout for those marching men. The fall ceremonial will also be coming up soon and we are looking for-ward to bringing on new Shrine candidates. Increasing our mem-bership is essential to keeping our organizational a national front runner in providing medical services for our children. Billy Jellie, PP Provost Guard Reporter

Greetings, It was great to see everyone again at the September meeting and catch up on summer adventures. Our court was dark for the month of August, normally we are dark for July and August but our Grand High Priestess, Lady Joy Moore, made her offi cial visit to our court in July. Now that we have had our “little rest” we are back into the swing of things again. SASA is always fun, as you can see. Our ladies always enjoy attending SASA with their Nobles.

In July, thanks to Lady Lisa Neault,PHP, we gave a number of panda bears to Noble John Larson, Co-Chair of the ACCA Hospital Committee and Transportation Team, to distribute to patients being transported to the Shriners Hospitals. When I last spoke to Noble John, he had given out four panda bears already and he said, “The kids love them.” Who doesn’t love a panda bear!! We will be collecting pillows and pillow cases in October to send to the Greenville Shriners Hospital. They are always in need of pillows because some patients are given pillows to use on their way home after surgery. Thanks to the “Roadrunners” for all you do for us delivering our collections. We are also getting ready for our toy drive and Christmas party in December. We have already started collecting toys for the Greenville Shriners Hospital. Again, thanks to the “Roadrun-ners” our toys will be safely delivered directly to Greenville. We couldn’t do this without them, what a GREAT group of Nobles. Each of you are special to us!! Our court is hosting Grand Council in 2019 so this is a project we are always working on to make “our grand council” a super one. We will be having another silent auction on April 16 to help raise funds to host this event. Lady Sharon Heard, PHP P.S. Shriners Hospitals for Children will be the charity for the month of December at Sedona Taphouse. Please come out on Mondays, have a steak and help raise money for the hospitals.

ACCA Antique, Sports and Classic Car Club

Our Car Club enjoyed a very good summer picnic in June at Noble Dewey Draucker’s Swift Creek Cabin in Chesterfield County. We voted in our new member, Les Gillenwater, during the meeting. We were all glad to see Ill. Frank McAllister and his Lady Pauline at the fish fry picnic. They are a wonderful addition to have in our presence at our meetings. The Car Club again participated in the Carytown Watermelon Festival. We take the early shift and turn the afternoon shift over to The Oriental Band. Needless to say, the crowds were big and watermelon sales were brisk. Our tent set a new record with over $4,500.00 in sales. I think all the other 4 tents set records as well. What a huge day for the Shriners Hospitals For Children!

The Car Club Members attended the Divan Ladies Red, White and Brew fundraiser on September 12, 2015. Our members showed seven cars, all in the sports car category or vintage antiques. As expected many took great pleasure in talking to the members about their cars and asking many questions. We also had another new member, Marty Ledbetter, bring his car to dis-play, which is pictured below. Russell Graves continues to have knee troubles and eyesight problems. He has limited mobility and is unable to attend most shrine functions, but is very interested in our activities. President Michael, all our club members and our Ladies, invite all Shriners to call us with any questions or comments. Hopefully, some will develop an interest in our activities with antique and sport cars and decide to get in on the fun. The great outpouring of interest at the Red White and Brew is very encouraging and we hope we can pick up speed as the fall and winter approach. Ed Johnston Jr, Reporter

Legion of Honor

The Legion had a great time at SASA. The fi rst order of busi-ness was our banquet and installation of new offi cers. PC Lany Sneide took over the reigns as SASA Legions of Honor Com-mander. Other offi cers were: 1st Lt. Commander Paul Penny-backer, 2nd Lt. Commander A1 Rock, 3rd Lt. Commander Jim Cone and Adjutant Peter Gordon. Intemational Commander Jim Pulley joined the festivities. Our members worked hard to get the golf carts Parade ready. They did a great job! The Color Guard and the Legionnaires ridding the golf carts helped ACCA Legion of Honor win First Place. A big thanks to PC, HL Bill Sears and Lady Peggy, PC Tom Snead and Lady Dana and my Lady Bette who helped set up the

SASA Hospitality Room. With their help, we were up and run-ning Wednesday afternoon. Thanks also goes to all who helped with food and hosting duties. Coffee was ready at 7 AM and hos-pitality continued through the late evening. There was plenty of good food and spirits! I would like to express the Legion’s appreciation to PC Bill Brockwell and Lady Betty Jean upon his retirement from years of reporting to the Accalette. Job well done! The Legion is always looking for new members. If you’re a member of ACCA, a Veteran or member of any branch of the U.S. Military, “We want You”. Give any member a call for infor-mation. The Greenville Shriners Hospitals for Children held a Board of Governors meeting 28 September, 2015 and was attended by Dr. Richard Redman and Ill Dennis English. The overall condition of the hospital is very good. One very important thing that is cur-rently happening is that the patient load is increasing each month. For August there were 262 new patients, giving the hospital an average of 229 plus per month. We also had 1,221 outpatient ap-pointments, 19 inpatient discharges and 93 surgical cases, all the while maintaining a 99 percent patient satisfaction rating. This is because of the superior leadership of the administrator, Randy Romberger and new Chief of Staff, Dr. Wattenberger as well as the entire hospital staff. Acca added two new patients for August, bringing the total for the year from Acca to 17 and an overall total for the hospital of 2,069 new patients. The hospital thanks all the Shriners and their Ladies for your sup-port of this great hospital. The results of the tie contest are in and Asa Morrison submitted the winning de-sign. He is the 11 year old brother of pa-tient Kelli Morrison. In addition to having his name on the back of the tie, he also re-ceived the $50 fi rst prize for his design. The design is with the manufacturer at present and is expected to be ready for the Christ-mas season. If you would like to have one, the price will be $30. You can contact me at 540-295-1417 or [email protected] and I will make sure you get it. See the picture to see what the tie looks like. All proceeds from the tie will benefi t Shriners Hospitals for Children, Greenville. The renovation of three of the parent guest rooms has been completed and the last three are expected to be completed by mid-October. The renovated rooms are very nice and offer com-fort and privacy to the parents while their child is being treated and recovering at the hospital. This is a great benefi t that our hospitals provide. NEWS!!! For our drivers, two new reclining chairs are on or-der for the drivers’ lounge for your comfort while waiting for the child you brought to the hospital to be treated. This is but a small token of appreciation for what you do for your temple, your hospital and the Shrine. You provide a very worthwhile service to our patients and their parents/guardians. This is also very reward-ing to you as a driver. I would encourage you to consider becom-ing a driver, perhaps a husband/wife team. I don’t think you will ever fi nd a more rewarding way to send Love to the Rescue. Dennis English, PP Member, Board of Governors

Sauerkrauts

When last I corresponded, the Krauts were just beginning to book gigs for our busy season, and book we did. Wow, we have re-ally set the bar high this time around. Although we look forward to each and every performance, and enjoy performing, it sometimes seems as though we are pushing the envelope just a little too far. But, as I have said before, when it comes to doing what we do, the higher the hill, the easier the climb. So far this year, we have hit the ground running by playing sev-eral very successful gigs. On Saturday, September 5th, we played the fi rst ever Oktoberfest at Lakeside Village in Cumberland County. The crowd was great and the band hit a homerun. I was told by several folks in attendance that they really didn’t know what to expect from a party with an “um pa” band. But just af-ter playing for a while, they were blown away. We had the adults singing and swinging and dancing around just like the kids in at-tendance. None fell to the ground, but it was close on occasion. Afterwards, they were so impressed with us that they immediately asked to be booked next year. On Saturday, September 12th, we played a six hour gig at the Center of the Universe Brewery and played another four hours at the same location on Sunday the 13th. For us brass guys, that’s quite a strain on the old chops, but we did it and were rewarded quite nicely for our efforts. On Wednesday, September 16th, we played the pre-game, and the halftime show for the Richmond Kickers soccer match with Toronto. It made for a rather late night, especially given that we were hitting the road early Thursday for our trek down to Myrtle Beach for another full day of playing on Friday. But again, it was well worth it and we enjoyed every minute of it. Now, we are in the process of fi lling our lungs full of air once again in preparation for our October calendar. It all begins on Sat.,

October 2nd and runs right up through the 30th, during which time we will have performed a total of fi fteen gigs. If you do the math, that’s just about one gig every other day of the month. Some of us may be looking to rent some additional chops along the way, but in our opinion, it is so well worth it and WE are having a ball. Please keep us in mind if there is any type of occasion for which we may entertain. Bill Hudson, Reporter

Average cost per month, YTD, is $5,787. We currently have 24 Shrine Drivers and 8 Ladies. 55 trips with 58 patients, through August. Thanks to all of the drivers for allowing us to take care of our shrine kids and stepping up to drive for last minute trips. Driver activity for August was 6% below the 2014 average. Transportation costs for 2015 are estimated at $72,500, at this point in time, based on the previous 8 months. We met with the Divan earlier tonight and will be making a few changes to the restrictive age portion of our policy as well as widening the allowable pool of drivers. This is a result of meet-ing with our Insurance folks and providing the Divan with their comments. More Information to come. Our older Transportation Van is getting close to retirement, most likely at the end of the year due to high mileage and repair bill potential. A committee will be formed as in the past to inves-tigate a new replacement vehicle. We really need some additional drivers (both Nobles and their Ladies). Please consider driving for the Transportation Team. Ralph Heard would like to have more drivers to choose from. We have lost some of our drivers due to aging out, illness or family illness... and please take this back to your Unit and Club Membership and mention it. Have them contact Ralph or John Larson if they are interested. If you would like to help the Hospital Committee, the meetings are held the fi rst Tuesday night of each month at 7:30pm in the Trophy Room and are open to all Nobles and their Ladies. You are welcome and encouraged to participate. James A. McAllister, PP, Chairman 2015 John O. Larson, Co-Chairman 2015

Membership Committee Greeting Nobles! How quickly the autumn weather seems to settle in upon our return from Myrtle Beach and the S.A.S.A. Convention. Next thing you know, we will be gearing up for Christmas parades! Before we get that far, however, Acca has a Fall Ceremonial that we hope everyone will bring a non-Shriner friend too. To end September, Acca’s membership stands at just over 1,430 members, slightly down (2.0%) from our starting numbers in January. While we have experienced a fair number of addi-tions to date, there have been a larger number of losses. This is YOUR Temple Nobles; PLEASE help by finding a candidate for the Fall Ceremonial! Our goal this year (as every year) is posi-tive growth in membership. With the Grand Lodge’s One-Day Conferral this past August, we have an excellent opportunity to conduct one of the largest Fall Ceremonial classes in recent memory. Please take advantage of this, attend your Blue Lodge and get those petitions! To help support new members, the Membership Committee has created a mentorship program that will begin the day of the Ceremonial. Such a program has proven to be an essential tool to the retention of new members and has worked very well for many other Shrine Temples. It is critical to keep new Shriners and their families involved in every aspect of the Temple’s activities and business. With your support and participation, we will cultivate members and relationships that will last a lifetime. Additionally, the Membership Committee is creating a Shrine Ambassador’s Program within each of Acca’s 22 Masonic Districts. If you would like to take part in either of these pro-grams, please contact the Temple immediately for more informa-tion. As always Nobles, feel free to contact the Committee with questions, to share your ideas, give us your feedback or just to talk. We are a resource for you and your Unit or Club and want to see everyone succeed. Keep up the good work and always remember to “THINK MEMBERSHIP!” Sincerely and Fraternally, Ross C. Motor Patrol

The Acca Motor Patrol has been very active in Shrine func-tions. The Watermelon Festival was successful. Acca had its best year fi nancially. The Motor Patrol was again a major player. It was a long day and members of the unit were standing on their last leg when it ended. It was good to be part of the success, but no one seemed to want to renew their acquaintance with a water-melon for a while. The Acca Harley’s participated in the Chesterfi eld County Fair parade. It was our fi rst time for the event and probably our last. The parade was very nice but not suited for the air-cooled engine of a Harley. It was just a ride-thru parade with a limited area of pavement and we were following a local beauty winner in a con-vertible which stopped every few yards for family and friends to take pictures. It was obvious that we would not make the entire route. We exited the parade at the next opportunity. Following the parade, we met at a local restaurant for dinner and had a member of the Mini Patrol and his lady join us. A very enjoyable evening. The next parade in Powhatan presented a similar situation. The parade route was narrow and maneuvers were limited. Again, the parade moved at a very slow pace, but we had an enjoyable day. We shared breakfast prior to the parade and caught up on all the rumors and maybe started a few. We had a large turn-out for SASA. We shared a hospitality room with the Mini Patrol. Good food and spirited beverages were avail-

able plus a lot of good fellowship. A number of the guys competed in some of the competition. Past President, Ronnie Butler won a plaque. I will not elaborate, you need to ask him personally. Re-luctantly, I will mention our participation in the parade on Friday evening, or in our case, that night. We were fi fteenth in line of seventeen Shrine Centers. While the parade started at six o’clock, we did not get on the parade route until eight thirty. Prior to enter-ing the parade a heavy rain shower made it very uncomfortable and since the road was wet, a deterrent to doing maneuvers with the bikes. After entering the parade, we were checking out the condi-tion of the pavement when it started raining a second time. So, after waiting for a long while for the parade to begin, getting our feathers wet, and going a total of one block, we exited and returned to the hotel. A good decision, but a disappointment. We always look forward to the SASA parade. Some of our sick are having diffi culty. Ronnie Wray is still recovering from surgery along with Illustrious Sir Marion Daw-son and Wayne Powers. Tom White is dealing with respiratory problems. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. We are looking forward to the upcoming parades in the fall and holiday season. Maybe we will have better success than in the past. Larry Koon, Reporter

Our “dark” period is over and we will return to the Colonial Heights Moose Lodge for our next meeting on the 4th Wednes-day in October. If you would like a good dinner at a reasonable price, and good friendship, just give us a visit. During our ”dark” period, we were working for our Shriners Hospitals. Past President, Bill Brockwell visited the home of Kenny and Linda Mason, residents of Colonial Heights and a very generous couple. The Masons wanted to present a check to the Shriners Hospitals for Children and this is not the fi rst time they have made a donation to our philanthropy. They were presented with a Certifi cate of Appreciation.

Petersburg Shrine Club

Kenny Mason and Bill Brockwell In September, we held our annual picnic at White Bank Park in Colonial Heights. We had delicious hamburgers and cheeseburg-ers and hot dogs cooked over hot coals. Our cook was our Secre-tary, Ralph Bartley and Past President Harless T. Dobbins was his assistant. Everyone brought delicious side dishes and desserts.

Noble Ralph Bartley and Noble Harless Dobbins. Trey Jackson, Branch Manager, Enterprise Rental, Colonial Heights and representing the Enterprise Holding Foundation was presented with a Certifi cate of Appreciation by Club President Ed Rivers for the check we received for the Hospitals. This has happened for a number of years. If you need to rent a vehicle, call Trey and tell him who you are and he will work with you. Wilson Abernathy, owner of Battlefi eld Park Body Shop, was instrumen-tal in our Club securing this donation but he was unable to be present to receive his Certifi cate. Northern Neck Shrine Club

Hi Nobles, Monday, August 10th, the Northern Neck Shrine Club made a relaxing trip aboard the 100 ft. Chesapeake Breeze to Tangier Island. The weather was perfect, 80 degrees with wind out of the South at 0 mph going over in the morning and 1 foot waves com-ing back in the afternoon. After arriving at 11:30 am, we all headed straight for the Fish-erman’s Corner Restaurant for the freshest seafood anywhere. When you are at the crab capitol of the U. S., you have real crab every which away. Golf carts are the best way to tour the island (no cars or taxis). Miles of narrow roadways and small bridges all over the island, along with salt water marshes. But, surprisingly, there were no mosquitoes or fl ies to bother us this day. Noble Lynn Spears headed up the trip and provided a cooler full of cold water for the group. Walter L. Jackson, Club Reporter

The Director’s Staff

The Martin’s Carytown Watermelon Festival arrived on a sun-ny and warm day in August. The Director’s Staff along with four other Temple Units had tents set up to sell watermelon to benefi t the Hospitals for Children. Led by none other than Director Tom Williams staff members were out in force. By noon the tent was being slammed with customers who wanted to partake of the de-licious melons so much so that the carvers had trouble staying up with the demand. By early evening all the melons were gone and the Staff had realized a profi t of nearly $3500 to be donated to the Hospitals. Thanks to everyone who worked including the ladies who made this a successful and fun event. It was impressive to see so many Probies there. Also, thanks to Martin’s Supermar-kets for the donation of the watermelons. Even though August is vacation month a large contingent of Staff members were on hand for the meeting on the 12th. Noble Tom Williams, Director got things off to a fast start due to great preparation. Noble Frank Bishop presented a memorial to the late Noble Don Muddiman. An update was provided on the wa-termelon festival which included a big thank you to all those who supported this effort. Plans for SASA and the upcoming NA-SCAR race were discussed and everyone seemed pleased with these efforts. There was the usual banter from Past Director’s pontifi cating however this too passed without much fanfare. The meeting was adjourned on motion from the fl oor. The September meeting was an eventual affair with the plan-ning for SASA, NASCAR Race, and the stew in October. After a lengthy session concerning these events there was still time for some levity and fun. There was some discussion concerning the lighting in the room and the fact that the air-conditioning wasn’t working. Under the careful direction of the Director Tom Wil-liams business was dispensed with in an orderly manner. Even the Past Directors were under control with little expounding. Good to see two of our long time members at the meeting namely Ill. Sir John Hanna and Noble Roger Dickinson. The Staff Grapevine refl ects Nobles Ernest Lee McGregor, and Doug Jones along with Lady Dale Klausminzer and Lady Dewa-na Beamguard. Noble Don Muddiman passed away on August 9, 2015 and services were held August 22, 2015 at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Huguenot Road. Noble Don Muddiman was a long standing member of the staff and will be remembered for his many contributions to our efforts including fund raising for the Hospitals. A large contingent of Director’s Staff Members were at the service for Noble Don.

The Xfi nity NASCAR Race was held on September 11, 2015 and as usual the Director’s Staff was in attendance serving as ush-ers. Led by Noble Director Tom Williams and supervisor Noble Paul Lanier on his trusty golf cart, things were in order. A total of 38 volunteers took care of the ushering responbilities in an excellent manner. A big thank you to the folks who provided the lunch and those staff members and volunteers alike who served as ushers. Also, a big thanks to the Mechanicsville Lodge for the great breakfast. The 2015 SASA has come and gone not without the usual fan-fare. The Director’s Staff contingent led by Noble Tom and Patti Williams had a great time which included the never closed hos-pitality room and the parade on Friday in Myrtle Beach. Also, a number of members attended the SASA Director’s Staff Associa-tion breakfast. Everyone was pleased with the activities includ-ing the parade and enjoyed many social events. DIRECTOR’S STAFF WHISPERS: What’s with the melon carvers at the Festival? Had a hard time keeping up with the demand. More workers or better training? Most intriguing ques-tion from a customer; “Were the knives used for anything else other than cutting watermelons?” Only the Shadow knows. One Noble who was unable to work was placed in charge of prayers for the workers. It worked. Has anyone seen the infamous VW lately? It is a forlorn sight in the back lot of the Temple with a fl at tire and covered by a tarp. Isn’t it time to do something? Has anyone noticed how the Probies have been stepping up lately? Could it be the fi ne work of the Probie Master? The mayor of Rockville blessed the staff with his presence at the September meeting much to the joy of the members. He really draws at-tention. Who is responsible for the air conditioning in the staff room? It was warmer in the room than outside. Who was that Past Director who was involved in a hit and run with personal in-jury of another Past Director? Did anyone get his license number or was he moving to fast. Unsafe at any speed.“Es Salamu Akleikim” Frank Bishop, Staff Columnist

Well, we are getting into the fall of the year. We have played some great courses this year and had a lot of fun and fellowship. We enjoyed our out of town golf trip to Pinehurst, have participated in a number of tournament to represent the club and have sponsored holes on occasion to show our support. We have had good attendance of the members for most of the events, but would like to see more golfer involved with the club. More Shriners would be most welcomed, but anyone can play with us. So get your friends to join us. There is still a lot of activity for the remainder of the year. The monthly schedule: October 22nd, we will play the Royal New Kent Course and on November 19th (a week earlier than we normally schedule) we will play the course at the Meadowbrook Country Club. In October of this year (this will be past news when the publication comes out) we will have played in the Scottish Rite Tournament, had a one night, two round golf trip to the Northern Neck area and joined with Kazim for a day trip to Amherst, Va for a round at the Poplar Grove course. As in the past, some of our member will get together during the late fall or early winter for a spontaneous round when weather permits. I will send out information, when possible, to the members.

Some reminders – On January 13th, we will have our annual Ladies Night at the Meadowbrook Country Club. This is a special evening. Mark it on your calendar and try to attend. Actually the Ladies have determined the date. They like to have the event after the holidays and then in the middle of January, it is a good time to be active again. Our annual out-of-town golf trip will be held April 13-16, 2016 in Myrtle Beach, SC. Put it on your calendar. We will again take four foursomes from Acca and the same from Khedive. This will be our fourth out-of-town trip. We have a really good time and each year it gets better. Some observations – Even though a member of our group was given a calculator, he still seems to miscount his shots at the end of each hole. It appears that when you are having a diffi cult day, members of your group will give you free golf advice. But at the end of the round, you have the lowest score. When a certain member continues to disrupt your game, a simple call to his wife will correct the issue.

ACCA Million Dollar Band

Summer has just about passed to quickly, however there are still warm days and cooler nights ahead before autumn arrives making us all aware that winter is nearer than we would want. I cannot be too critical of the Virginia weather as we have not suf-fered any draughts or hurricanes so far this year. Since last communication the Band has participated in the Sat-urday Temple Business Meeting, Carytown Watermelon Festival and let us not forget SASA at Myrtle Beach, S.C.. At the Carytown Watermelon Festival the Band with great sup-port from the Hillbillies, Southside Shrine Club and the Ceremo-nial Cast a Gross sales of $3,452.00 which was raised for our Hospitals. What a fun day it was and as usual the “sights” were delightful. The Band appreciates all the assistance rendered by the Ceremonial Cast, Hillbillies, and Southside Shrine Club, oth-erwise we could not have pulled off the event by ourselves. Now for the SASA report of events. The Band had its usual hospitality room open for Band members, their Ladies, and other Shriners and their Ladies to gather for fund and fellowship. Due to the Friday evening “NIGHT” parade it was decided that the room would only be required for Thursday and Friday rather than the three days as previously held. Your Band Secretary, his Lady Bina, John Conover and Lady Vicky spent Thursday morning buying the groceries and setting up the Band hospitality room. This way those arriving on Thursday afternoon would be able to relax and enjoy some refreshments prior to doing whatever they so desired. The Bandaides, of the Band, were most gracious in procuring the main course for Fridays lunch after the Festival of Music. Subsequent to lunch some members of the Band began

putting the fi nal touches on our recently purchased trailer from the Directors’ Staff for use in the “Night Parade”. I thought the group did an excellent job in dressing up the trailer to comply with our theme for the parade , celebrating the Band’s 100th An-niversary. Cannot say enough about all the time, effort, hard work and passion that Fred Paul and his Lady Carol put forth ensuring that those who rode on the trailer would be proud and pleased with what the parade crowd would be observing. “Did anyone notice Robert Llewellyn’s New Truck?”. As for the results of the parade judging, the Million Dollar Band was awarded a “Second Place”, losing out to Oasis. Oasis’s Band did not participate in the Friday morning Fes-tival of Music, so I cannot say how good or bad they may have played in the parade. I understand that they did play the same type of music (a march) as we did. What I do know is that our Band was not very diligent during rehearsals prior to SASA. I will say that for those individuals who showed-up for rehearsal did do their very best with what we had. However all who were going to SASA were not present at weekly rehearsals. Therefore the Band’s true level of profi ciency could not be evaluated by the Director or his Assistant Director prior to leaving for SASA. Thus, the Band received what was probably correct, ” Second Place”. Congratulations to the other units and clubs on their

trophies received at SASA 2015. As usual, on Friday morning, the Band participated in the SASABA Festival of Music event at the Crown Reef Convention Center. The Million Dollar Band played a variety of selections followed by Million Dollar Band’s “Gospel” Group entertaining the audience and then our own “Saurekrautes” accomplishing their normal outstanding reper-toire of German music. Our performance was followed by the musical group from Khedive Temple and the Grand Finale of the event was the massing of all units present into a “Mass Band” Concert of Music. Upcoming events for the Band are Imperial Plaza, Masonic Fam-ily Day, “Sounds of ACCA”, and Cedarfi eld . We are looking for-ward to show casing our talents and making the audience happy. As most of you know Donnie Johnson has been recovering from a very serious boating accident last year and it sure was great having Donnie back playing at SASA 2015. Donnie is not all the way back yet, but you know that he is not going to let his accident keep him from accomplishing a full recovery; keep up the good progress Donnie. Also, Deane Wright, widow of “Buck” Wright a long time member of the Band, passed away on September 13th 2015 and has been reunited with Buck. She will be missed by all. Who was that Lady in the Band Hospitality Room on Friday afternoon, asking someone to lick the sugar off her lips, thus now known as “Sugar Lips”. Please keep our servicemen and women in your thoughts and pray for their safe return home to their love ones. Dave Bishop, P.P., Band Secretary

Valley Shrine Club On September 23, the Valley Shrine Club met at Pano’s Res-taurant in Harrisonburg. President Peyton Yancey opened the meeting. Noble Reverend David Burrough gave the invocation and the pledge of allegiance delivered. Greg Owen of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical So-ciety gave a most informative talk on predictions made in 1900 in a Ladies Home Journal article “What may happen in the next hundred years.” Some of the incorrect predictions were that Ni-caragua and Mexico would petition and granted admission to the United States as states, fl ies and mosquitoes would be gone, automobiles would be cheaper than horses, and c, x, and q be eliminated from the alphabet. He also stated that many of the prominent scientists of the era dismissed the possibility of heavier than aircraft being capable of fl ight. Noble Julian Fisher reported that the Blue Grass Festival at Grand Caverns was a success thanks to the efforts of the many volunteers from the Shrine Clubs in the area. A check for $15,180.86 was written for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. In the last fi ve years, the event has raised $49,890 for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and $5,894 for the transportation fund. Sign-up lists were passed about for the Rocking R Hardware food booth and Bob Evans Restaurant fund raisers scheduled for September 25 and 26 and October 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Noble Peyton Yancey urged all members to redouble their ef-forts in selling the P Buckley Moss Print raffl e tickets. He also stated that the next meeting is on October 28 at Pano’s Restau-rant. The November 18 meeting will be a silent auction fund-raiser for the Shriners Hospitals for Children chaired by Lady Norma Sheap. The Christmas Celebration for children from the area receiving treatment from the Shriners Hospitals for Children will be on December 19 at Pano’s Restaurant. Bill Crouse, Secretary

We were treated by Terry and Tim (I still can’t tell which is which), to a delicious pork medallion dinner at our August meet-ing. Good job guys. Everyone wishes you would cook more of-ten. Ya’ll are pretty good at it. The results from the T.V. raffl e were very good. It was won by Gene Williams, wife of noble Matt Williams. The Cary Street Watermelon Festival was a real success. The club had a net of approximately $3360. That’s a record for the club. The Temple as a whole raised approximately $17,000. Thanks to Martin’s for donating the watermelons. Help in the morning was a little light, but improved in the afternoon. Unfortunately we ran out of cups and had to sell slices for a while. That won’t happen next year because the Temple will provide an ample supply of cups. So, “wait ‘til next year”. Thanks to all the nobles, ladies, and friends, who worked this event. It’s worth it to watch all the crazy people. We had two 100 Million Dollar Certifi cate drawings this month. The fi rst was won by yours truly and the second was won by Mac McPhail. It was good to see Lady Ann Chaney, wife of Past Potentate Clay Chaney, at SASA after her fall and rehab. Jerry Baber is home now. I’m sure he would like visitors. Past Potentate Bob Puffenbarger lost his brother James August 5th. The Black Camel has been busy lately in our midst. Kenny Smith passed away July 28th. Kenny was a longtime active member. At 92 he still came to many meetings and was at SASA last year. July 29th Ron Han-sen passed away. The last time I saw Ron he looked great. What a shock. And on August 9th Don Muddiman left us. Don and Marlene were faithful stew workers. Don went through a lot of medical problems. All these nobles will be missed. Please keep their families and friends in your thoughts and prayers. SASA got off to a bad start with us. On arrival Wednesday afternoon most of the power was out in the area. Coral Beach had

one computer, one elevator running plus the A/C and refrigerator circuits. Check in was really slow. Our hospitality room was over the top. The theme was the USA. A large American fl ag adorned one wall, and red, white, and blue banners and drapes were all around. Thanks to our decorating crew headed up by President Johnnie Carr and Lady Cindy, helped by Tim & Linda Ford, Ter-ry & Mona Nall, Sybil Voth and Jim “Scooby” Price. They did an outstanding job. Some of that same bunch came up with the idea of raffl ing off a high dollar booze collection. So they made up a big, beautiful, box of booze and beer. (That’s a lot of B’s). This great idea netted a little over $1000 for our hospitals. Can you believe I won! Virginia Darnell did the drawing. She is the widow of a long time Chanter. I think I love her. The jury is still out on the night time parade. Some liked it, others didn’t. It was cooler. Acca got a brief shower right at step off time. Some of the special lights on some vehicles was pretty. Acca did have the big room two times. The party Thursday by the Potentates Hillbilly’s and the Provost Guard was well attended and Saturday was the presentation of the trophies and booze drawing. Lady Jean and I had the pleasure of bumping into The Grand Mas-ter of Masons in Virginia, Most Worshipful Reese E. Carroll and his lady, Mary. Jean reminded me that we had been on the trip and cruise around Hawaii with them. It was the cruise of Past Potentate Carroll Jones and Lady Elizabeth. It was good to see Louis Melton and his wife, they made the nine hour drive up from Florida. Our stew in early October will be over by the time you read this. More on that next time. The Christmas Party is December 13th. Make plans now to attend, help and donate to the January “Cornhole” Tournament. Let’s make this the biggest and best yet! ACCA Hillbilly Unit

Well howdy cuzins! Your ACCA Hillbilly unit has been quite busy this summer and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. Again this year, we partnered with Dominoes Pizza and sold con-cessions at the summer music festival, “Shakin at the Station”, held at the downtown wharf in Staunton. While fi nal totals are still pending, we have no doubt this was a successful event! All for charity! Additionally, we partnered with the Frontier Culture Museum, to help park cars at some of their community events. What a wonderful way to raise funds for our unit, while getting the “Shriners” name out there in our local community. I’m also happy to report, that the hillbillies assisted, as part of the Shenan-doah Valley Shriners, at the “Blue Grass in the Park” in Grottoes, again this year. Preliminary totals suggest that as a whole, the event raised over $15,000 for our hospitals. Shew we! I worked up a sweat thinking about how busy we’ve been! Not to mention all the fun we had at SASA! As you can see, we are busy, having fun, and doing our best to support the world’s greatest philan-thropy, the Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the number one temple in all of shrinedom, ACCA!! We look forward to see you all at the upcoming Christmas Parades! HONOR THE COB!! Yours Truly, Captain Bill Wimer

Oriental Band

Well another summer is behind us, and what a time it has been. Lots of activities at the Shrine Center, parades, bingo, auto auc-tion and of course SASA. Band members have been busy as well with driving for the auto auction , working the bingo at the Ashland Moose, as well as Nolan and Steve driving the children to the hospitals. As you can see working on our trailer takes time and patience as we were preparing for the trip to Myrtle Beach. A big thank you to our members for their hard work in getting ready. Although it rained our Drum Major Vince did receive a trophy, presented by our own Potentate at the September Uniform Council meeting. The band did take second place in the competition. We have a busy parade season ahead of us and we look forward to representing ACCA at all of these events. Again, I would like to thank all the members of the band and their ladies for all they do for the band. A special thank you to Steve and Sandy Meagher, always, always ready to go the extra mile and do anything asked of them, and congratulations to Steve as he was elected Sergeant at Arms for SASOBA and will be the Associations President in 2020 (or sooner). Nobles please remember that our organization is only as strong as its members so please help preserve and grow ACCA by recruiting new mem-bers. And until we meet again may God bless each of you and your families . Respectfully, Buddy Small, President

Mini Patrol

WOW! September was an amazing month for the Mini Patrol! This year, our competition driving team returned to competition for the second year in a row after a 10 year sabbatical. I am pleased to announce our competition team was decorated with many awards while at SASA. We took fi rst place in the competi-tive drill, which includes the standing inspection as well as the precision maneuver set. In addition, our cumulative inspection and drill scores were suffi ciently high enough to earn us the four wheel highpoint trophy. To top all that off, the Mini Patrol took second place in the obstacle course this year, placing very re-spectable times. In addition to placing in the course, I am pleased that each one of the drivers participated in the course this year. What great fun! If you want to check out our competition drill set, visit http://www.youtube.com/user/accaminipatrol and click on the video for SAASMC 2015. The SASA parade was a bit rainy, but the Mini Patrol hung in there. We really wanted to participate and show Myrtle Beach how great Acca Temple can be. We’re glad we did, because the Mini Patrol earned fi rst place for mini cars! I am so proud of the guys this year. We put a lot of preparation into competition this year, and it shows. The proof is in the pud-ding -- and that pudding is a yummy collection of fi rst and second place trophies. Noble Ed Currin provided us with a real treat…practicing over at RIR. This allowed us to practice on a regula-tion sized fi eld, all while having a unique experience of driving at RIR! The cars looked better than they have in years, and for the very fi rst time this millennium, we had 100% participation with the same type of engine. Our maneuvers had exceptional spacing and timing. Most importantly, I observed a real team mindset. Our competition team this year worked with each other, provided constructive criticism, and played off each other’s skills

to provide what I believe is one of our group’s best performances. What an amazing team effort, and I am so proud to have been able to lead the group this year. Awesome job guys! The Mini Patrol also participated in the Gordonsville parade for the fi rst time in years. We were awarded fi rst place for civic/church groups, and we got to meet several neat people waiting for the lineup. Two delightful kids came over to meet us and re-ally enjoyed sitting in our cars. And, in typical Mini Patrol style, we had a great dinner afterwards fi lled with fun and fellowship. It doesn’t get any better than that! Moving forward, the Mini Patrol’s tires will be blazing the rest of this year with several parades and driving exhibitions. It’s a busy time of year for us, and it reminds us of the reason we all drive those tiny little cars. While we all have fun, the truth is that mini cars run so little legs can walk, and I am pleased that our unit continues this tradition in the fi nest sense possible. Fraternally, Jason Hodges, Commander
