Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord,

Welcome to Sacred Heart Church!

I am happy that you were able to

join our worshiping community as

we celebrate our Eucharistic Liturgy

for the 17th Sunday in Ordinary

Time. Your presence and prayerful

participation enrich all who gather.

Thanks for being with us!!

Today’s 1st Reading from the Book of

Kings is a favorite of mine. Upon the Lord

promising, “Ask something of me and I will

give it to you,” Solomon responds in the spirit

of a true “shepherd-king.” Solomon asks for

“an understanding heart to judge your people

and to distinguish right from wrong.”

Solomon’s request is not a selfish one. His

request benefits the people he governs. As

“shepherd-king,” Solomon sees himself as a

servant, not as one who seeks for himself “a

long life” and “riches.”

It is “wisdom,” an “understanding heart,”

that Solomon values!! Solomon’s request is to

become our prayer. Each of us, within our

families, within our faith community would do

well to pray for an “ understanding heart.” It

is an “understanding heart” that enables us to

be compassionate in our relationships, in our

interaction as family, as community. An

“understanding heart” enables us to be just.

In light of today’s Gospel could we not say

that an “understanding heart” is the “treasure

buried in a field” that we “sell all” to

purchase. An “understanding heart” is that

“pearl of great price” that one “sells all” to

buy. Value an “understanding heart!” Pray

for an “understanding heart!”

May we seek wisdom through an

“understanding heart.”

Be well!

God bless!

Fr. McKee

God, our Creator, has stored within our minds

and personalities, great potential strength

and ability. Prayer helps us tap and

develop these powers.

There are many things that are essential to

arriving at true peace of mind, and one of the

most important is faith, which cannot be

acquired without prayer.

Faith and prayer are the vitamins of the soul;

men and women cannot live in health

without them.

Have faith in God; God has faith in you!
