Making Waves 2 February 2012

Commodore’s CornerI am sitting in my office, looking out the window, watching the snow blow by and accumulate into drifts at the base of the pine trees. I found that if I squint just right, swaying my head from side to side, I am able make the drifts look like waves on the water. Perhaps this is a sign of cabin fever. Thank goodness it is early enough that I am the only one here to see me rolling my head from side to side. I am positive it is a sign of sailing depravation. For some members of the club also suffering with this affliction, they may find a remedy in February with the club trip to the British Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend that trip and must delay my treatment until the beginning of the Alum Creek sailing season. I truly envy those that are able to join our members in the Caribbean at the end of February. If there are some that are interested, especially with the recent meteorological incentives, I believe there are still a few open bunks on some of the boats. If you are interested, be certain to contact our Monohull Captain, Luis Navarro or Neil Heiser for more information. For those who made it to the January general meeting or read the minutes, you will know that we are sending out the dock invoices shortly (you may have received them even before receiving this newsletter). Included is our membership form for the 2012 sailing season. Please attempt to get these back

to ACSA early, to allow us more time to process all the invoices.Dock Pick day is also just around the corner, on March 10 at Gordy’s in Westerville. This is when we will be performing our annual dock swap, allowing current dock holders to move to different, unoccupied docks. After that, we will be cycling through the dock waiting list to assign new docks. Finally, after all of the unoccupied docks have been assigned, we will cycle through the dock waiting list again to assign seasonal subleases. Thanks to much planning and experience this process moves very well and takes about an hour. Our Rear Commodore, Gordon Fowler will be providing more information on the Dock Pick process. The official splash day is still April 1, 2012, but, as many of you know, the two southern ramps on Alum Creek (Hollenback and New Galena) are closed due to construction. The last we have heard from the State Park is that they are scheduled to be opened by May 1, 2012. Some boats who are able to raise their masts at the dock will still be able launch their boats at the Cheshire ramp and motor under the bridge to the ACSA docks. Those who are not able to raise their mast at the docks will need to postpone their launch until one of the southern ramps re-open. I will be meeting with the State Park officials on April 18 to discuss the topic of the ramp maintenance topic, among others and will provide updates to the TwoList as soon as possible. I just glanced out the window again and noticed that the snow is coming down heavier and the wind is picking up pace. I am thankful that it is finally here, for the sake of the skiing facilities and people who enjoy the winter weather. Perhaps we might even salvage an ice boating season this winter. Still, I long for the hot, sunny days of summer, spending time on the boats with good friends and fair winds. Until then, I can daydream out my office window and envy those who are able to escape for a brief tropical sojourn to lower latitudes. For those who are escaping, I only ask two favors; enjoy local beverage for me and bring back plenty of pictures and stories.

Rear Commodore’s Report

Hello to all of the sailors of the Alum Creek Sailing Association (ACSA). We haven’t had much ice yet but the weather is about to change. There still is chance that the hard water sailors will get their boats on the ice.

Some folks are very lucky and will be heading to the British Virgin Islands next month. It sounds like there are 20+ sailors who will be meeting up and touring the Islands with some very large 41-47 foot boats. Unfortunately, teachers just can’t miss work this time of year, or else I’d be there. It may be something to think about for next year, Luis, a la Spring Break…hmmmm.

The new Executive Committee is working to keep things up and

running for the club. I am quickly realizing what a hard job Mikie had. Mikie has been the Rear Commodore for such a long time, much of his hard work and efforts may have gone somewhat unnoticed. I’m finding out already how much time and effort Mikie really put forward to keep the Facility up and running. I can tell you now, that this is going to be a challenging job and will require a great deal of time to maintain the high standards that Mikie set forth. Keeping the facility going will also require much support from many volunteers. I will be calling upon the

membership throughout the year to help whenever I can’t get out to the lake. Bernie Marshall is our Volunteer Coordinator and will be helping me with organizing a series of work party projects. These are posted on the calendar in the newsletter. Soon the boats will be back in the water. By the way, one brave soul had ice growing ice around hull. Fortunately he has now cut his path through the ice and onto his trailer. I think he should change the name of his boat to “Ice Breaker”. The new leases have now been sent out and I look forward to receiving them back as soon as possible. Leases and all required paperwork are due by March 1st, no exceptions. If it is not received on time you will forfeit your dock. If you have not received your lease and paperwork, call me ASAP.

Dock “pick day” is on the 10th of March, 12 pm. This is a week earlier than last year due to a conflict with St. Patrick’s Day at Gordy’s.

Moving the dock pick day up a week will give me and the staff less time to prepare for the onslaught of dock holder wannabe’s looking for the available open slips and several available sub leases. Please come even if you are on the bottom of the wait list. Also remember that Gordy’s gives us the room for free. Please order a lunch and have a drink or two. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the meeting due to a prior work-related commitment. However, I will work with the other committee members in advance to assure that all is organized and prepared.

Remember, you must be present to swap to an open dock or make prior arrangements with the RC.You must be present if you are on the wait list to pick an open dock or make prior arrangements with the RC. Please attend even if you are at the bottom of the Wait List as we usually make it through the list with open docks and subleasing.

Also, the gate has been re-positioned in accordance with prior conversation. With the newly positioned gate, there is a possibility that we may have to move one of the end boats to another location to accommodate a large tri-hull that was displaced last year. If this happens, it should only be temporary because the gate can be moved back in the near future. Hopefully most boats will get in the water on time this year. If the two main ramps are not ready you can always put your boat in north of the Cheshire bridge with the mast down. There are several easy ways to raise your mast at the dock and I’m sure there will be plenty of available help, so don’t be discouraged.

Book ReviewThe invigorating story of a real-life race to sail around the world--and break the fictitious record set in Jules Verne’s 1873 novel--in seventy-nine days. In Jules Verne’s historic novel Around the World in Eighty Days, Phileas Fogg and Jean Passepartout race at break-neck speed to circle the globe in eighty days. Around The World In Seventy-Nine Days is the true story of Cam Lewis, who set out to better the impossible pace set by Verne’s illustrious characters. Along with Bruno Peyron, one of France’s most famous sailors, and a small crew of Frenchmen aboard the Commodore Explorer, Lewis set sail. A world champion sailor, Lewis’s spirits and patience were often tested by communication difficulties with the French-speaking crew, midnight steering shifts, fatigue, frustration, and fifty-foot waves that threatened to smash the boat. Fearing for his life, Lewis grappled with the idea that he might never again see his fiance--or the unborn child that she was carrying. This fascinating chronicle of a world-class journey illuminates not only the struggle to maintain endurance and faith, but the will to achieve greatness no matter what the odds.

Around the World in 79 Days REMINDER!Remember at the next general meeting we will be holding the first election for Members at Large on the Dock Committee. Adult Learn-to-Sail

I’m planning through the next quarter for Adult Learn-to-Sail and I’m looking for those interested in sharing their time and talent with our eager newcomers as well as some of our returning club members. We have five people signed up for the classes already for the year!

I’m planning on five classes this year, losing one Sunday class due to the late opening of the ramps. I understand from conversations with many of you and through my tie-in with Tom that more than several of you have helped out in the past, and many quit helping because of the repetitive nature of the course. So my first goal is to spread the wealth. I’m looking for 18 instructors total, each instructor volunteer committing to one complete session. This will let you volunteer around all your own personal events this year and still let you take time to volunteer with the Association.Tom has built a program that was notable, earning him a personal award

and the ASCA some public recognition. And we do have competition in the area. And, as I am new, I have a lot to learn. So I’m asking those who volunteer to give an additional two days this Spring to helping make the changeover seamless to the public and help me get to know you all better. I want to meet with all those volunteering personally to get your ideas and learn about your skills.

Additionally, I am working with the EC to include in my budget a $50 stipend for each instructor volunteer that will get certified by the Red Cross in First Aid/CPR. This stipend will cover 40% of the cost of

your training or recertification with them.

Spring ‘Training’: - Saturday March 10th; we’ll get underway after the dock pick session at Gordy’s - Saturday April 14th; time and place TBDSailing: TBD. I’m launching Lifeline as soon as the weather allows. Farmer’s Almanac says that might not be until May, but we’ll watch the weather.

The dates for the LTS Classes are:Thursdays: May 31st through June28th; currently scheduled from 6 - 9 (may push back to 6:30 start)Thursdays: July 12th through Aug 9th; same timeframeThursdays: August 6th through Sept. 27th; same time frameOne instructor and one back-up per course.*Sundays: Jun 3rd through July 8th (Father’s Day is not scheduled) from 3 - 6Sundays: Aug 26th through Sept 27th; same time frameFive instructors and two back-ups*

John Zoll

*will be available to come to the Spring training sessions and on an hour’s notice to fill in on sessions they volunteer for.

Typically, instructors will also be boat owners, but we do have one consistent volunteer that does not. The Club does have Balanced Sheets to use for training. So if you want to instruct, learn to instruct, and don’t have a boat, come on out and join us. I’ll find a way to get you on the water. And, if you can’t instruct but do want to support us by lending us your vessel for the day, let me know that too.

Please email me direct with your interest.

UPDATE: I have proposed to the EC the addition of one more session in the Adult LTS program and plan to begin with an ‘as-interested’ basis with the students. The addition is an ‘away sail’ to Lake Erie. The idea is to demonstrate the basic keel boat skills they’ve studied on a larger platform, and show them ‘where they go from here’, especially those that don’t already have boats. I need your help with this, though. I need ASCA members with boats/yachts on Lake Erie to volunteer one day’s sail with the students and an accompanying instructor. We’d meet at your dock on the Lake a week or two following the completion of a class to introduce them to bigger water while demonstrating that the theories they learned on the smaller boats continue on the larger ones. My thoughts are that we work towards increasing opportunities for our non-boat owning members by encouraging group charters out of the Lake Erie ports. The introductory ‘lesson’ you all provide can expand the promotion of our sport to our newcomers. Let me know if you’re interested in supporting this idea. Email me direct at [email protected] Z, LTS Chair
