Kelana Course Sultan’s NineHole No. 9364 metres (par-4)

The 9th hole is a mid-length par-4 that gives golfers a chance to improve theirscores before they challenge the closing nine.

Like the vast majority of KGNS’ golf holes trees line both sides of this 364-metretest. Its broad fairway, however, is a big help to players.

The hole starts with tees that are set slightly below the landing area for most drives.Well-struck drives that reach the fairway's crest will gain a bit of extra roll. Land it shortof the crest that blocks the view of the green, however, and a long approach shot is theresult.

In addition, golfers need to stay left on their opening shot, as a fairway sandbunker is positioned just after the 150-metre marker on the right side of the fairway.

While the hole is basically level, the green does sit below the crest, so approach shots carry with ease to a huge, very deepputting surface. If you aim the approach at the middle of this green your golf ball will surely come to a stop somewhere on thegreen, but you could have a 30-metre putt to contend with.

Birdies and pars are common on No. 9, so play with confidence and record one.

Captain’s Note

Moving Forward

Dato’ M. Harris Kudus

As many may have already noticed, two of the Management Committee members, Encik Abdul Majid Md. Yusof andEncik Hamzah Bachik have resigned. At the same time, we have one serving Federal Government Servant to fill the slot asprovided in the Article 27 of our Memorandum & Articles. Further, to head the Finance Sub-Committee following theabove-mentioned resignations, we have co-opted Encik Pattis Naidu to take up the vacant portfolio. With that, I can assuremembers that the present team is capable in managing the affairs of the Club effectively and efficiently.

The annual Club Championships were successfully held in August and congratulations are in order for our new Champion,Encik Zairul Hisham! Next time around, we hope to have the Annual Championships in May 2009 instead and, being thepremiere event that it is, we will be making early preparations to ensure that it is held in a prestigious manner befitting theChampionship.

Touching on the patronage of the Club, I would like to remind members that our General Bye-Law 54, page 22, prohibitsPrivate Servants in the Club buildings. I appeal to members to adhere to the Bye-Law strictly.

Every year, the House has to approve the Club’s Annual Budget and we hope to hold the Extraordinary General Meetingin December 2008 to deliberate on the 2009 Budget. It is our commitment to operate the Club in line with this approvedBudget.

In conclusion, I take this opportunity to wish all our Muslim members “Selamat Berpuasa” and “Selamat Hari RayaAidilfitri” and to all our Hindu members “Happy Deepavali”.

Five months have passed in my reign as KGNS Captain and I have enjoyed my dailyroutine at the Club. Members have come forward to congratulate and, at the same time,to offer constructive suggestions for the good of the Club and its members. Amongstthem are many senior members sharing with us the benefit of their expertise and I amindeed glad for their contribution, which is what I had been hoping for.

Members“Merdeka Night”

Members and their guests thronged the Bilik Buaya onSaturday, 30th August to herald in our nation’s independ-ence day at the 2008 edition of ”Merdeka Night”! It was agreat success in more ways than one as, in conjunctionwith the annual celebration, the Social Sub-Committee tookthe opportunity to hold a collection for charity, as a closeto and in aid of the Disaster Fund for victims of theMyanmar Typhoon and China’s Szechuan Earthquake. Allour caring members and guests donated graciously.

Resident band “Bangkok Julie” & Friends entertainedthe crowd and had them dancing non-stop with theirperformance. Taking over, whenever the band paused tocatch its breath, was none other than Louis the Maestrowho had the crowd in stitches with his comedy routine andeven got the audience involved in some spot games.

At the stroke of midnight, cheers of “MERDEKA!MERDEKA! MERDEKA!” resounded, with the Social Sub-Committee, in unison, taking the lead with KGNS GeneralManager and Deputy General Manager joining in to lendsupport! Then it was everyone’s turn to give full voice tothe national anthem “Negaraku”, followed by the lateSudirman’s “Tanggal 31 Ogos” whilst waving hand-held“Jalur Gemilang” that were distributed earlier to all present..Marking yet another birthday for our beloved homeland, our Social Sub-Committee Chairman did the honours incutting a Merdeka cake, courtesy of Menangfax.

KGNS’ service outlet operators also chipped in bysponsoring prizes for spot dances and games for the night. Our member, Mr Michael Nyam, did his bit by sponsoring2 bottles of wine which were auctioned off to generousbidders in the assembly; the first went at RM250.00 (Mr C.B. Tey) and the second to Mr. Tan Soon Cheam forRM200.00! Also in our midst were our very own ClosedKaraoke Competition 1st and 2nd Runners-up whocontributed a song each to entertain the audience.

History in Brief

By March 1964, a 20-man Commit-tee comprising the late Tunku asChairman, Minister of Interior the late Dr.Ismail Abdul Rahman as Vice-Chairmanand officials from the Treasury, thePublic Works Department, the Townand Country Planning Department, theFederal Capital Commission and nota-bles from the golfing community then setabout to:

KGNS History in Brief(The following is an edited version of an original article penned by ‘Clio the

Muse’ which appeared in the Souvenir Programme of the Benson & HedgesMalaysian Open 1993 hosted by KGNS)

Kelab Golf Negara Subang, the premier membership golf club in Malaysia, celebrates its 40th anniversaryon 1st September 2008 but in its short though illustrious history, it has, literally, been called a number ofnames! Back in 1963, at the behest of the club’s and nation’s founding father, Almarhum Tunku AbdulRahman Putra Al-Haj, the Ministry of Interior began quietly studying the prospect of building a new golfcourse in Kuala Lumpur (at the time, RSGC was already up and running!) The selected site was SeaportEstate, a rubber plantation located on the Batu Tiga Road near Sungei Way, Selangor.

secure Federal funding (to build a 27-hole golf course, 18 for members and9 for the public!)commission renowned Japanese golfarchitect I.S. Inouye to design whatwas to be “one of the best courses inSoutheast Asia”

The late Tunku then formally de-clared, in late March 1965, that KualaLumpur’s newest golf jewel was to be

named “Sungei Way Golf Club”. That, asthey say, set the cat among the pigeons,as both sides of the political divide inParliament mounted attacks on thefeasibility and funding of the project. Thefurore, which went on unabated until

1968, intensified with the new revelationin June 1966, that there was to be, in fact, four nines – the fourth to be built in PulauLangkawi! Ostensibly, this was to forgelinks between the island off the Kedahcoast and Sungei Way in Selangor! In the

Page 13: ADS: HTCOn behalf of the Management Committee, Members and Staff of Kelab Golf Negara Subang, Berita Subang congratulates our President, YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Megat Najmuddin

Berita Subang 13

midst of all that, yet another label wasattached to KGNS, i.e., Kelab GolfKebangsaan Subang!

In any case, the late Tunku and otherpro-project lobbyists contended thatreturns from (a) management of the club,(b) development of an adjoining 35-acrehousing estate and (c) operations ofmodern country-style hotel on a 10-acresite (to cater to the then newly-completedSubang International Airport) wouldadequately service borrowings from theFederal Government. However, there wasthe added contentious issue of acquiringland for the latter two schemes! No doubtto appease opponents and calm iratepoliticians and public alike, the lateTunku’s next gambit was to table beforeParliament the Subang Golf CourseCorporation Bill in early 1968!

Whilst design was all I.S. Inouye’s,KGNS, as we know it today, is the coursethat Tom (Verity) built, and shaped, inclose association with PWD engineersMr. Chew Choon Lee and Mr. Bobby Tan!Mr. Verity, ex-golf professional of Singa-pore Island Country Club and RSGC,

moved over to KGNS in 1966 and, in aradical departure from Inouye’s plans, fashioned an 18-hole par 72 golf courseof 6,835 yards, now known as the “Putra”.

The late Tunku’s vision for a world-class championship golf course was areality when on 1st September 1968, theSubang National Golf Club (Kelab GolfNegara Subang) was inaugurated byDYMM SPB Yang DiPertuan Agong,Tuanku Ismail Nasiruddin Shah.

By December 1968, the number ofenrolled members topped the 600 mark(outstripping the original limit set at 400!);it stood at 700 in 1969 and come April

1970, the figure was in excess of 1,000,with more waiting in the wings to sign up!Despite a failed, though bold, bid forstaging the 1970 Malaysian Open atKGNS, the late Tunku persisted inpromoting the club’s championshipplayability and the coming of age forKGNS, as it were, was the inauguralSelangor Open held here in April 1972.By then, KGNS had well and truly earnedits much-deserved standing as acourse par excellence, challenging anddemanding, in a class of its own! Againstthis backdrop, work began in earnestin the mid-1970s to build the Tun’s

and Sultan’s Nineswhich make up the “NewCourse” (Kelana, as weknow it today!), dulycompleted in 1978! Bythe way, did you knowthat in 1981 KGNS wasthe only establishmentin Malaysia to installan automatic sprinklersystem for the entirecourse?

Travelogue

Day 1 – All 17 of us, children, parentsand grandparents, arrived by air late inthe afternoon of late autumn for a family-oriented vacation.

Day 2 – Freemantle - a relaxed scenicone-hour cruise along the beautiful SwanRiver from Perth. On arrival, we hoppedon the CAT, a free bus ride around thetown. Lunch was delectable fish & chips, followed by the-must-see Old FreemantlePrison where an old retired wardenentertained us with jokes in between grimstories of life behind bars.

Day 3 – The King’s Park . A walk throughthe park is an antidote to life’s trials andtribulations. The Park is a work of love withits well tendered grass fields and gardens, which boasts over 2,000 WesternAustralian plant species. The park workedmagic on the kids. It’s delightful to seethem running and laughing.

May 24-June 01, 2008

Day 4 – Yanchep National Park , asplendid lakeside picnic area with lots ofshady trees and lush green fields, plentyof ground for the kids to run and chasewild ducks and for adults to lie down onthe carpet grass or get a closer look atkoala bears in their habitat. Next was atour of the underground caves 13m below, underneath flat lands, an adventureenjoyed by all. This cave opening isliterally a hole in the ground, unlike caveentrances in our country which are mostlyabove ground at the foot of limestone hills.

Day 5 – The Aquarium, Sorrento Quay .Twelve thousand km of WA’s coastline iscondensed into this aquarium. You getvery close to sharks in the 98m long glasstunnel, where fish, turtles and seals glidethrough the water effortlessly. There isalso a shallow pond for kids to touch thesting rays.

Day 6 – CavershamWildlife Park , forvisitors short of time to“go bush”, Cavershamaims to represent wildlife from all corners ofAustralia, walleroo, rockwallaby, wombats andthe Tasmanian devils toname a few. Childrenget to feed kangaroos,

rabbits, goats and enjoy a camel ride.Children love the park.

Day 7 – Perth Zoo . It’s a ferry ride acrossthe Swan River to the zoo, one of world’sbest. However, the four grand-parents’separate plan to drive to Mandurah , 74km south of Perth was called off as I wasdown with the cold — but I have beenthere before. It is a dreamy watersidetown, a little Venice, a place of luxuryboats, waterfront mansions, grand estateslined with palm trees, and a place to enjoypicnics, seafood, water-sports, cruisingand canoeing on the Murray River orhiring a motorized dinghy.

to which our mobile phone calls for fivetaxis came to naught. Holed up at arestroom shelter hut for over an hour, ourprayers were finally answered in the formof a tram driven by an elderly friendlyhelpful driver cum knowledgeable guide. The 17 of us fully occupied all theavailable seats and arrived at the city, albeit at a slow and steady pace! At thestop the gentleman driver helped theparents to bring down the kids and theirtrolleys. We were ever thankful to thisman. After a brief shopping to cheer upthe children it was time for lunch of kebab!

Day 9 – We bade farewell to Perth, aftera brief but very beautiful family holiday.

The King’s Park is unique. No other city inthe world has such a large area of naturalbushland at its heart. The cultivated gardenswith lawns, terraces and water gardens formbut only a small part of the 988-acre sitewhich is situated on a hill-top with boundedon the most part by cliffs. The park is full ofmemorials – the Cenotaph commemorat-ing the fallen of two World Wars, the victimsof the Bali bombing of 2002, the VietnamWar and Western Australian victims of theSouth African war of 1899-1902.

There is a wide choice of eateriesranging from the elegant Fraser’sRestaurant to a family-oriented restaurant-cafes and kiosks for snacks and ice cream. There are two main playgrounds, the LotteryWest Family Area and the Synergy Park, suitable for kids of all ages, with their owncafes and rest areas.

The panoramic view of the city from theCenotaph is outstanding. Beyond theCenotaph are the heavily planted sectionsof the Botanic Gardens with over 2,500Western Australian species, tendered withloving care.

Perth . Closer to Singapore and Jakartathan the nearest large Australian city,Adelaide, and separated from Melbourneand Sydney by some 4,000 km of outback,Perth is famously remote. What’s more, it isthe capital of the largest but least populatedstate, where a mere 2 million peopleinhabiting a third of the continent. “A boom-ing economy, an equitable climate, anoutstanding natural setting…How’s not tolike this seemingly effortless paradise onearth” - INSIGHT.

LADIES AMATUER OPEN

KGNS ladies golf committee is making their presence knownwithin national club circles with its inaugural KGNS LadiesAmateur Open, a tournament meant to replace the SelangorLadies Amateur Open, which for years was hosted by the club. When financial support diminished for the Selangor event, theladies of KGNS stepped forward with a new tournament to carryon the traditions of the old event and increase the opportunity forlady amateurs to enjoy competitive golf.

The Open, held July 1-2 on the Putra Course, saw a full fieldof 120 participants ranging from 12-years of age to the GoldenGirls (ages 41 and above).

The MALGA squad of K. Dayanitha, Kelly Tan and MicheleKoh, captured the overall gross team title, with the Kelab RahmanPutra (KRP) team of Tho Lee Wah, Alice Wong and MaryanneSan, taking the overall nett.

In the individual competition, scratch golfer Ainil Johani Bakarstaked her claim as the overall gross champion by virtue of asizzling performance. Ainil fired an impressive 1-over par 145 toeasily outdistance the field under the blazing weather.

Like Ainil, Nur Durriyah Damian (14) carded a score of 131to emerge the overall nett champion.

The new tournament is scheduled to be a permanent fixturein the KGNS golf domain and, hopefully, it will draw Malaysia’sbest lady golfers for years to come.

The Organising Committee of the KGNS Ladies AmateurOpen is grateful to the corporate sponsors and individual well-wishers who contributed towards the success of our inauguralcompetition. The Committee also looks forward to the continuedgenerosity of these corporate sponsors and individuals for thestaging of the event at KGNS in future years.

KGNS Staff Highlight

Maniarasu a/l EaumalaiKGNS Chargeman

Today, as Chargeman GradeA4, certified by Jabatan BekalanElektrik, Surohanjaya Tenaga,Maniam and his two subordinatesare charged (pun not intended!)with the respon-sibility ofpowering and lighting up KGNSon a daily basis. The day’s routinecommences with monitoring themain switch-board for incomingelectrical supply i.e., voltage/amperage parameters, etc. Then,in accordance with planned

opularly known as “Maniam” in KGNS circles, Maniarasu a/l Eaumalai, 48, has

been a familiar figure (and key personnel!) of the club since 1983. Interviewed

by then General Manager, Benson Lim, (“If you want the job, you can start

workplace, Maniam takes just as muchpride in his long-service record and inhaving contributed positively, over theyears, to the success of KGNS in moreways than one. For one, he mooted theidea of traffic lights at Putra Course,Hole No. 11 and, later, Hole No. 9 which, when first suggested with circuitdrawings et al, did not win immediateacceptance!

Maniam’s tenure at KGNS has notbeen without its moments, bittersweetor otherwise, and, in reminiscing withBerita Subang, he recalled vividly thehair-raising fire experience “some timeago” at the NEB (National ElectricityBoard) transformer adjacent to the old

caddy hut. A memorable event, though, was the welcoming of the newmillennium (Y2K) when KGNS wasablaze with decorative lights fromclubhouse to gate! To queries posed byBerita Subang, Maniam reckoned thatfor an establishment of KGNS’ stature,it would be fitting to make both the “gateand clubhouse entrances moreattractive and grand! For me, it is a niceclub and I enjoy working with mycolleagues, the GM and with themembers. The annual charity drivewhich KGNS started for helping thepoor is something I really appreciateabout KGNS.” If the truth be known, itis KGNS that is indebted to him for hisunselfish contribution, of own time andenergy, towards any charitable causechampioned by the club or others. Heis always there to lend a hand to theneedy, asking nothing in return. A golferhimself (handicap 16), Maniam hasgiven some thought to retirement thatis looming in the horizon and plans torun his own business in the not-too-distant future. But for now, he isconcentrating on giving “good service,as per expectation”, to members ofKGNS!

Selangor-born (Dengkil) and son ofrubber tappers (Prang Besar Estate,Putrajaya), Maniam and wife arethemselves proud parents of fourchildren, with sons aged 21 and 19pursuing tertiary education in ElectricalEngineering (what else!) andInformation Technology, respectively.Maniam’ two daughters are still atschool in Forms 6 and 4. would soon be a quarter century of dedicated service to KGNS! Starting out as Electrician

in the Electrical Department, he recalls, back then, it was a “one-man show”, with no

chargeman boss to report to, and that the Department came under the purview of the

House Sub-Committee (Encik Azaraai).
