CHIC – The Canine Health Information Center

• Jointly sponsored by the AKC CHF and the OFA

• MISSION: To provide a source of health information for owners, breeders, and scientists, that will assist in breeding healthier dogs

• Initiated in 2001 as pilot program with 8 participating breeds, today over 130 breed parent clubs participate and over 60,000 dogs have met the individual breed requirements and been assigned CHIC numbers

CHIC

CHIC is about encouraging health testing and awareness

In short, CHIC…– Establishes a breed specific health screening

protocols– Collects health test results from multiple sources– Makes the results available in an online publicly

accessible database– Recognizes those dogs that have been tested in

accordance with a test protocol recommended by the breed’s Parent Club

• OBJECTIVES– Facilitate more rapid research progress by

expediting the sample collection process– Provide researchers with optimized family groups

needed for research– Allow breeders to take advantage of future DNA

based disease tests as they become available– Foster a team environment between breeders and

the research community improving the likelihood of genetic discovery
