My Perspective on the Movie “Son of God” By Paul Ebohon

It felt like eternity trying to find a parking spot, and I just hoped that the next ShowTime for “Son of God’ would not require me waiting for at least 30 minutes or even an hour. While I approached the movie ticket’s booth, my eyes caught a glimpse of Robocop, American Hustle, and Anchorman 2. Wait! It’s my lucky day because “Son of God” starts at 1:30 pm, and it’s exactly 1:20 pm. The timing could not have been any better. I raced upstairs, found a comfortable seat, and absorbed the last couple of previews which preceded the movie (Son of God).

The movie (Son of God) started off very well and the character’s point of view being narrated was John; the same disciple which our mid-week bible studies had spent a significant amount of

time on. My high expectations for “Son of God” were intact until it got to the scenario where Jesus Christ had an encounter with Simon. I wish I could give you a painting expressing the level of my disappointment as the movie dragged me along.

Apparently; here is Jesus Christ at the edge of the lake asking Simon if any help was needed. Simon who is currently in his boat on the lake, declined the offer by using a loud (or you can call it an obnoxious) tone. At this point, I could visualize myself literally flipping through the bible (Luke 5:1-11); as in, the same scripture which a colleague and I recently wrote an article about being obedient to the word of God.

CULTURE > MOVIE REVIEW

6 November 2014 | www.Agapeflash.org

Page 7: Agapeflash Magazine November 2014

Going back to the movie, Jesus Christ walked into the lake and was immersed at a very good depth. He then asked Simon to help Him into the boat and both of them sailed out further into the lake. This is then followed by the movie’s sound effect; Jesus Christ placed His hand into the water and Simon subsequently casted his net into the lake and pulled up a harvest of fishes.

All I could think about during that particular instance was, “Am I missing something about the original encounter which is clearly stated in the bible?” What happened to the two boats being empty and their owners washing their nets (Luke 5:2)? How about Jesus Christ getting into one of the boats at the edge of the lake and then asking Simon to journey a little bit away from the shore (Luke 5:3)?

Am I forgetting about the people whom Jesus Christ taught from the boat (Luke 5:3)? Whatever happened to the crucial conversation between Jesus Christ and Simon (Luke 5:5)? If I am not mistaken, does the bible not clearly state that Simon needed help from other fishermen to pull out the great harvest of fishes (Luke 5: 6-7)?

I temporarily got over this dissatisfaction until the scene where Jesus Christ walked on water towards His petrified disciples (Matthew 14: 22-31). The bible clearly states that Peter made a request to Jesus Christ; this request specifically required Peter walking on the water towards Jesus Christ (Matthew 14: 28). Apparently, the movie had something else to show; Peter did not utter a word and Jesus Christ asked this particular disciple to come towards Him.

Peter stepped out from the boat, looked at the lightening, and immediately starts drowning? Oh no! Jesus Christ; please save this drowning disciple! The movie’s Director could have at least allowed my poor Peter to walk on the water before the dramatic encounter (Matthew 14:29)?

Just for a second, I wonder what else society has painted or engraved into my mind. This was meant to be a movie where the series of events are well documented in the bible. In order to depict the key scenarios which some Christians are very familiar with, did the movie’s producers or Director even take out the time to read the bible? At this point, maybe I should watch "The Passion of the Christ" again and see what's contrary to what the bible says.

Again, what else has media flooded my mind with? Is my definition of blessings a vivid one defined by society or the genuine word of God? How do these images factor in when I pray to God, especially when it's obvious that His intended images for my life may be totally different (Isaiah 55: 8-9)? How about those who I seek counsel from? Do they have some (or a plethora) of images not based on the word of God?

To Christopher Spencer; the movie Director of Son of God, your movie might have grossed $26.5 million and debuted at number two at the Movie Box Office during its first week of release, but some of the scenarios presented about the "true" Son of God clearly contradict those which I know (as clearly stated in the bible). The authority of the true Son of God whom I worship cannot be undermined and it's clearly stated in the bible that He called Lazarus out of the tomb (John 11: 38-44). That is the true Son of God whom I serve. The One that speaks and every circumstance (including death) conform. However, the movie (Son of God) clearly showed Jesus Christ and Martha in very close proximity of Lazarus prior to being resurrected.

As Christians, it's important that we stay rooted in the word of God so that we get a true definition of what He wants for our lives. In addition, the renewal of the mind can never be overemphasized (Romans 12:2). Finally, it's important that we seek counsel from individuals

who God has ordained as our destined helpers rather than those operating solely on images and experiences not based on the word of God (Psalm 1:1-3).

This article is in no way intended to bash the movie (Son of God); but rather, raise awareness about what is being portrayed to us. Are you viewing your spouse or waiting on one based on the vivid images and experiences painted by society? Do you view your colleagues as being failures since they don’t amount to societal

standards? Are you struggling to acquire material things in order to satisfy the counsels from ungodly individuals?

As Christians, it’s important to have a firm grip on the blueprint which is known as the word of God; it’s the same blueprint which Jesus Christ used in overcoming Satan’s temptations in the wilderness (Matthew 4: 1-11). Rather than the contrary images presented by the voices of an ungodly society, the same blueprint will give you a vivid image on how God intends your life to be.

The memory of driving that car off the dealership’s parking lot remains a vivid one. All I anticipated was my colleagues’ approval of my status based on the newly acquired car. Apparently, the new car (in question) was brought out of my colleagues’ perception of the previous one which I had. Are you serious? Is that the car you drive? Why not trade it in and get a bigger car?

You would assume that the chastised car was dilapidated, but that was not the case.

Looking back at the whole ordeal from a matured and godly perspective, did I succumb to my colleagues’ pressure (to get a new car) due to being naive? Could it be that I was filled with pride and just wanted to just fit in with them by all means? Could it be that I never had the backbone to rebuke their taunts? These and several other questions can be pondered on. However, one thing is for sure, I definitely surrounded myself with the wrong crowd at that moment in my life.

The feeling of being accepted by these colleagues came with a price. I’m talking about a significant cost that spanned for five years. As in, that was the duration needed to finance the new car which had the balance from the previous one factored in. Apparently, I was not thinking straight and when the car dealership’s agent crunched the numbers, I felt convinced that the amount which had to be paid on a monthly basis would never be a burden.

LIFE > PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

The Unanticipated Price for Ungodly CounselsBy Paul Ebohon

Page 10: Agapeflash Magazine November 2014

Throughout the period of making those monthly payments, I somehow came to my senses and realized that there was never a need to acquire the new car in question; after all, the old one was in a good condition. Having made the last payment, I vowed to maintain and drive the car till all four wheels fell off. Apparently, you can definitely say that I learned a hard lesson which involved never (ever) succumbing to the pressures of ungodly counsels. The period in question was one where I really did not know Jesus Christ on the level and position He ought to have in my life.

These days; I’m definitely a different person who does not get moved by the pressures of the world. I don’t acquire

stuff just because it’s the latest brand or to feel accepted by my colleagues or family members. Since when did it become a crime for not having the latest technological advancement?

Having shared my experience, it’s now up to you to make a decision based on your colleagues (ungodly) counsel. Go ahead; you deserve a bigger house because it’s the new wave in town. Go ahead; why not get rid of that spouse who supported you through thick and thin; after all, someone of your newly attained status deserves someone better? Go ahead, why not trade in that car and get the latest brand? Why not go ahead and reap the unanticipated and detrimental price that has to be paid for such decisions which God never approved from ungodly counsels?

When it’s all said and done; I can guarantee you that your circle of influence plays a significant role in decisions being laid at your feet. As Christians, we don’t have to be caught up with things of the world and it’s important to stay surrounded with godly and positive individuals. Clearly, the word of God even emphasizes the need to meditate on His word rather than walking in the counsel of the ungodly (Psalms 1:1-3).

Your Father in Heaven knows your heart desires and needs. Therefore; let Him remain the main priority, center, and focus in your life. By doing so, there will be no cause for regret because the blessings from God comes with no pain or sorrow (Proverbs 10:22).

While recognizing the need for having a seed needed to produce a fruit, the

condition of the soil is one that cannot be ignored. In the parable of the sower, the Lord was focused on the soil where the seed was being planted (Matthew 13:1-23). The soil equates to your heart, while the seed represents the word of God. The condition of the heart is a determinant of the level of increase that will be manifested in your life according to the will of God.

From a biological perspective; everything revolves around the heart, and its dysfunction can possibly lead to a heart attack. In the same manner, the spiritual heart is a vital organ that acts as a receptacle for our emotions, will, and conscience. This spiritual organ is a critical component on where the word of God is planted. A heart which is not in the right condition explains why an individual can receive the word of God in his or her spirit, yet get rejected in the soul.

The spiritual heart is very important and even Jesus Christ emphasized this in the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-23). Why do you think

Guard Your Heart in a Diligent Manner By Pastor Nkhosana Chongo

Page 13: Agapeflash Magazine November 2014

November | www.Agapeflash.org 13

the Lord says, “Love God with all your heart (Mark 12:30)”? This is because He knows that a heart which is not aligned with the spirit will not conform to His word. Even God (Himself) has a heart and this is confirmed by David being after it (Acts 13:22). Is your heart aligned with that of God?

Be reminded that you don’t understand with the spirit but the heart; therefore, it’s important that your spiritual heart is in good condition. Jesus Christ clearly points out the role of the heart’s understanding in the parable of the sower. Apparently; when anyone hears about the kingdom of God and does not understand it, that is an indication of the enemy’s successful attempt in snatching what was sown in their heart (Matthew 13:19).

God mandates that we guard our hearts in a diligent manner because every course of action flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). The heart makes decisions based on information received; which in turn, leads to implementations of actions. As a Christian, don’t be misled by sayings such as, “I’m waiting on the Lord”. Your heart which should technically be aligned with that of God should prompt implementation of actions based on finalized decisions.

Be reminded that the heart (in itself) can also be very deceiving, especially when it’s not in line with that of God (Jeremiah 17:9-10). While recognizing the deceitful nature of the heart, it cannot fool God (Galatians 6:7). You can deceive the church and your family; however, this deceit cannot be applied to God. What if God checks the condition of your heart at this moment? Will it be in compliance with what His heart desires?

The importance of guarding the heart in a diligent manner cannot be overemphasized. God does not care about the outward appearance; however, He focuses on the heart. As observed with David, the condition of the heart leads to

the establishment of the will of God (1 Samuel 16:7). Be reminded that God is looking at your total being, as in, “the motives behind your actions”.

While every measure can be taken to personally guard the heart, we can’t do the same for others. As Christians, it’s very important not being caught up with outward appearances; as in, falling into the deceptions presented by others. Therefore, have an intense desire for the spirit of discernment. This aforementioned spirit will protect your heart from being led astray by the deceit of others.

A heart which is guarded diligently is one that pleases God. This will in turn cause Him to grant the desires of your heart. However, reaping this benefit requires walking righteously according to His will. In addition to your heart desires, God will grant blessings which were never (even) requested. By guarding your heart in a diligent manner, your mind, steps and actions becomes like that of Jesus Christ and this will subsequently bring that desired increase to fruition.

What happens when the heart is not guarded in a diligent manner? We already established the fact that the enemy (Satan) takes away the word of God which was sown in the heart that fails to understand (Matthew 13:19). This explains why an obstacle (or defense) is established when the issue of giving to the body of Jesus Christ is brought up in a conversation.

This absence of the heart’s understanding also explains why roots of bitterness spring up and we fail to forgive our offenders. Be reminded of the importance of guarding your heart in a diligent manner. If you intend to hold on to pains from the past and not forgive your offenders, you might as well as forget about increase from the Lord. Your heart has to be right before God so that your desired increase can be manifested according to His will.

Godly ImaginationsBy Pastor Muna Chongo

Imagination takes thinking to an extra level whereby mental

realities are created in the mind. We all have this God-given ability of imagination which can be channeled in a positive or negative direction. For instance, expectation of an increase can be associated with positive imagination while worries connote a negative one. Rather than restraining from imaginations; we should recognize that it's not something new, and even God engages in it.

By harnessing the power of our imaginations, we can increase accordingly; however, non-believers of Jesus Christ (sometimes) tend to be more proactive in this area. Even the scripture clearly reminds us that the Lord commended the unjust steward for employing his principle of imagination in a better manner than the children of the light, which technically represents Christians (Luke 16:1-8). It's important that we embrace our imaginations because it has an integral role to play in our lives.

It's also of utmost importance that we remain encouraged and begin to understand the greater heights where imagina-tion can propel us. Imaginations will expand the muscles of our expectations. If we (as Christians) can't see the increase in our minds, it becomes difficult to

physically attain them. If we intend to see increase this year, we must begin to utilize the principles and power of our imaginations. This will in turn, enable us to see that increase which God has in stock for us.

As sad as it sounds; many of us (including Christians) some-times reside in the mental real-ity of our imaginations, which tends to be positive or negative. Have you accepted detrimen-tal mental limitations? Do you speak blessings or curses into your life and that of others? What do you say about your job, education, and family members? These are questions that allow one to ponder on what has been allowed into our imaginations.

Be reminded that negativity (including its associated imag-inations) has a propensity to increase in a positive manner.

14 November 2014 | www.Agapeflash.org

Page 15: Agapeflash Magazine November 2014

This explains why individuals tend to gravitate towards self-ishness and self-centeredness. The natural flow of sin allows the mind to dwell in negativ-ity; therefore, we need to take authority of positive imagina-tions and walk righteously in it.

As Christians, it's important that we create the mental reality of what the word of God says, and begin to walk in it. In turn, this will cause fruition of faith and confidence needed to get through undesirable circum-stances. Remember that when used in a positive manner, imag-inations expand our possibili-ties in life.

The importance of a constant need for the mind's renewal cannot be ignored. This renew-al helps to ensure that our Christianity walk does not get flooded with obstacles (Romans 12:2). We can't just sit back and expect this renewal to be auto-matic because the mind and emotions are not automatically born again when we give our lives to Jesus Christ.

While recognizing the propen-sity of the mind to gravitate towards negativity, we have the power to sanctify our minds with positive imaginations, and cast down the negative ones associated with strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:2-6). The ulti-mate question remains; as in, "Are you actively engaged in negative imaginations"? If so,

be reminded that such imagi-nations contrary to Godly ones bring about decrease in your affairs and relationships.

Apparently, our imaginations can procreate bondages; how-ever, those conceived on the thoughts and word of God brings fruition of breakthroughs and desired increase. As Christians, why should we be dealing with the issue of low self esteem? We ought to be constantly remind-ed that our focus and esteem should be on Jesus Christ.

The word of God (through the power of the Holy Spirit) is needed to wash the soul (Psalms 19:7). This in turn, would make the soul free from limitations and bondages created by nega-tive imaginations. In addition, the cleansing of our souls sub-sequently helps to envision the reality of the word of God through positive imaginations; which in turn, ignites the faith needed for our desired increase.

Regardless of what the yester-days threw at us; we should constantly be reminded that today is a brand new day; as in, an opportunity to create and envision the reality of the word of God. This envisioned real-ity is needed to (re)ignite our faith needed for fruition of God's increase in our lives.

Having emphasized the need for a renewed soul, an integra-tion of "positive imagination"

and "unity" remains a formidable partnership which cannot be taken for granted. We are clearly reminded about the power of unity among the people who decided to erect the tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-8). Although their actions were not estab-lished on Godly imaginations, they used their imaginations in creating a mental image which was fortified by their unity. Even God clearly recognized the power of their unity and there-fore had to intervene by causing confusion among them (Genesis 11:5-9).

As a church, unity is needed before any form of Godly imaginations needed for increase can be established. As an individual (representing the house of God), you are required to unite with the Lord before adding the dimension of positive imaginations needed for any desired increase. Through unity with God and imaginations lined up with His word, we are destined to achieve our heart desires.

Think about this for a moment; even the united non-believers who set out to establish the tower of Babel based on ungodly imaginations were on course to achieve their goal. If that was the case for them, don't you know that you can achieve greater heights by being united with God and having imaginations which are aligned with His words?

Five Ways to Have a Full Grip on the Word of God By Reverend Edmund Sackey Brown

The word of God is described as the sword of the Spirit which is needed to overcome the enemy

(Ephesians 6:17). The same sword of the Spirit (denoted as the word of God) is what Jesus Christ used in overcoming the enemy during His encounter in the wilderness (Matthew 4:4). It's important that we understand the need for having a full grip on

the word of God because it's the tool needed for guaranteed victory over every scheme of the enemy. This article highlights five approaches needed to have a full grip on the word of God. These approaches were chosen to symbolize our five spiritual fingers, which are needed to have a full grip on the sword emphasized in His word (Ephesians 6:17).

Page 17: Agapeflash Magazine November 2014

November | www.Agapeflash.org 17

The bible clearly emphasizes the need for reading and conforming to what the word of God of requires of

us (Revelation 1:3). Reading is a primary means for infusing the word of God into our lives. By indulging in this activity, the word of God clearly takes its roots in our lives. As Christians, it is important that we make out time to read the word of God on a daily basis.

1.Read the word of God:

Reading does not typically involve any form of pondering; however, studying does. Studying the word of God

involves cross referencing various chapters in the bible; and when done under the direction of the Holy Spirit, it leads to the accumulation of knowledge. In addition, studying the word of God places you in a position for better comprehension; which in turn, makes you well equipped to defend that which was assimilated from His word.

2.Study the word of God:

You can’t afford to go without hearing the word of God because it is needed for the production of

faith. It’s clearly stated in His word that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). Spend time to hear the word of God because it produces the food needed for faith; which in turn, is needed to overcome every plot of the enemy (1 John 5:4).

3.Hear the word of God:

This activity is needed to help store His word in your spirit (Psalms 119:11). Having a repository of God’s word serves as readily available ammunition. By His words being stored in you (through memorization), prayers can rendered faithfully. Such prayers basically reminds God (in His own words written in the bible) of exactly what He has declared over your life.

4.Memorize the word ofGod:

The importance of meditating on the word of God is of utmost importance (Psalms 1:1-3). Meditating on His word produces understanding that our heart desires are guaranteed according to His will and approved time. Therefore, we don’t have to be caught up in the schemes, avenues, and advise of ungodly sources or individuals. Meditating on the word of God makes it become alive in our spirits; thereby giving us an additional avenue to overcome the schemes of the enemy.

5.Meditate on the word of God:

In addition to the highlighted approaches, it is important to put the word of God into application because faith (by itself) without works is dead (James 2:14-26). Everyone goes through various challenges and issues; however, our faith in God is what makes us victorious. By utilizing the five approaches highlighted in this article, you can have a full grip on the word of God which is need-ed to produce faith. Remember that Jesus Christ used the word of God and it definitely worked for Him. As a Christian, the word of God must be the foundation that you constantly stand on.

Reinstate Yourself Before the Lord

When Saul lost the favor of God, Samuel clearly mourned for him over an extended period. Just as God spoke to Samuel, He is doing the same today and asking “how long will you keep mourning over those circumstances that ought to be buried (1 Samuel 16:1)?” In order to move into the places and increase established by God, you need to let go off those circumstances. Regardless of whatever that situation is, be reminded that the power of God is still available to lift up countenances and usher one

into glorious paths as witnessed in the life of king David.

Apparently, when God chose Saul to reign as the king of Israel, He had no intention of activating David (as a plan B). However, pride, disobedience, and being irresponsible caused Saul’s destiny to be unfulfilled. Just like Saul, you may have failed in certain areas or brought shame to the Lord; however, be reminded that He is a merciful God. If Saul was responsible enough to recognize the merciful

nature of God, he clearly would have asked for His forgiveness on various occasions; which in turn, would have led to being an established king that reigned forever.

God chose David in a similar manner in which Saul was chosen and it’s clearly noted that the heart of the former was clearly examined (Acts 13:22). Having clearly established that David was a plan B for Saul who lost the Lord’s favor, was David a blameless king without sin?

By Pastor Muna Chongo

Page 20: Agapeflash Magazine November 2014

20 November 2014 | www.Agapeflash.org

What differentiated Saul from David in the sight of the Lord? How did David respond in the light of sin? These are questions that need to be unraveled so that we can employ the same principle which David used in reinstating himself before the Lord.

David’s encounter with Bathsheba was a deviation from the Lord, and this was catalyzed by his idleness on the palace’s roof top (2 Samuel 11:1-5). If David had been at his designated position in battle, he would never have spotted Bathsheba. In the same manner, we should be reminded that sin doesn’t spring out from nowhere; we are basically responsible for setting the foundations for sins which eventually causes a major deviation from the God’s established paths.

Rather than idling at the wrong locations, it’s imperative to recognize the essence of praying, worshipping, thanksgiving, and other activities that prevent us from shifting from the boundaries which God has clearly established. David’s encounter with Bathsheba only got worse. She got pregnant, and his initial measures to implicate Uriah as the sole perpetrator were futile (2 Samuel 11:6-12). Having failed in his attempts to use the comforts not found in battle (such as good hygiene, sleep, alcohol, food, and sex) to lure Uriah into sleeping with Bathsheba, David eventually resorted to killing this diligent and innocent man (1 Samuel 11:14-16).

By indulging in such atrocious acts, how could this be the same David who was clearly after

God’s own heart? Was David better off than Saul? What’s worth mentioning is that David clearly implicated others in order to cover up his atrocious act with Bathsheba. Clearly, Joab was a victim of David’s plot and even the soldiers who withdrew in order to have Uriah killed are not exempted (2 Samuel 11:14-16).

If David was at his rightful place in battle, none of these events would have transpired (2 Samuel 11:1). In the same manner, Christians can be found lollygagging at the wrong locations which lays the foundations for encounters with ungodly activities. Regardless of your Bathsheba encounters, there is an opportunity for redemption which involves reinstating yourself before the Lord and embracing your David reign.

Embrace Your “David” ReignBy Pastor Muna Chongo

David's actions clearly displeased the Lord (2 Samuel 11:26). In the same manner, we need to be cognizant of actions that can be displeasing to the Lord. What's worth mentioning is that God made it known to David that he did not have to indulge in such atrocious acts; and if needed, He would have blessed him with more (2 Samuel 12:7-9). In the same manner, that's exactly what God is saying to us today. We don't have to deviate from His established paths because He is a God of abundance; He can provide everything which we seek.

Having recognized his deviations from the Lord, David accepted the consequences of his actions (2 Samuel 12:11-14). Taking responsibility for ungodly activities is something that Saul clearly failed to do on various occasions and this is what made David unique. Be reminded that God is merciful and will definitely restore you. Have you done anything worse than David?

Whatever the case is, it's imperative to take responsibility for our sins and ask for His forgiveness; this will lead to the Lord's restoration. In essence, we need to have a heart like that of David; a (humble) heart that is malleable and willing to accept responsibility for a contrary act; and in turn, ask for the Lord's mercy. Without such a heart, restoration from the Lord is impossible; which in itself is detrimental.

David was a man who was quick to repent from his sins. There is no guarantee that you and I will not fall into temptations or sins. There will definitely be occasions when downfalls will be encountered; however, a malleable heart like that of David is one which will bring the Lord's restorations (1

John 1:9). Be reminded that God is still in the business of restorations. Regardless of whatever that situation is or how shameful it might have been, God still wants to take you through the glorious life as experienced in that of David.

It's time for the Lord's restoration; therefore, stop mourning over the plans which failed or the contrary actions in question. Be like Samuel who acted according to the Lord's instructions and anointed David. Samuel definitely had to forget about Saul in order to anoint David, and it's imperative that we do likewise to our failed plan A's. Such an action will give the Lord an opportunity to establish the plan B's in becoming a glorious one like David.

Again, we should strive for having a heart like that of David; a heart that’s after God’s own heart. Such a heart recognizes and takes responsibilities for its actions; such a heart is quick to ask for the Lord's mercy and forgiveness. Having such a humble and malleable heart makes it possible to forget the "Saul" eras and embrace the "reign of David" which God has already established. Rather than being discouraged, stay encouraged in the Lord and be reminded that He is willing to provide restoration regardless of the actions or sins in question.

Question: Provide a brief description on how you meteach other?

Pastor Walu: Our initial meeting dates far back as 2005 and this was in Lusaka (Zambia). During the period in question, Michelle was enrolled at the National institute of Public Administration and was pursuing her Management studies while I was an assistant pastor at a Pentecostal Assemblies of God's church. We actually met during one of my pastoral calls. Michelle was (at that time) staying with her aunt, and it so happened that I was paying a visit to one of her family members who attended our church.

Pastor Michelle: I always take credit for seeing him first. While in the house, I heard voices in the back yard so I peeped. When I saw him, I thought he was very handsome. When my uncle’s brother came into the house, I inquired about the Pastor who he was having a conversation with outside. Rather than responding, my uncle's brother dragged me outside to meet my future husband-to-be. It was a very brief meeting and we exchanged pleasantries. From that moment, I kept thinking about him. Apparently he was also intrigued by me and that was the stage for numerous conversations of getting to know each other.

Question: Provide a brief description on how you meteach other?

Question: Would you say that it was love at first sight?

Pastor Michelle: I was strongly attracted to him, but I think my love for him grew steadily and quite rapidly. From the time we exchanged numbers, we kept in touch through phone calls and it was evident that our friendship was going to be special. We started off as friends, and then became good friends. It eventually got to a point where it was unbearable to let a day pass without seeing each other.

Pastor Walu: I guess a seed of love was planted in my heart on that first day that I laid my eyes on her. I remember developing such an affinity towards her. I did however exercise much patience because I wanted to know more about her. I grew fond of her; and almost immediately, she became my best friend. Our love and affection only grew stronger with each day that we met or talked on the phone. The proximity of our residencies also made it very easy for us to spend time together.

Question: What keeps both of you strong?

It’s really two things. Firstly, our faith and devotion to God keeps us strong. From the beginning of our relationship and marriage, we made it a point to put God at the centre of our relationship. We are both human with many imperfections, but we spend most of our time devoting ourselves to God and doing His work together. That has really been a source of our strength and hope. Secondly, we have made a choice to keep our love alive. At the end of the day, having a strong marriage boils down to making your partner your choice and remaining committed (regardless of the situations).

Question: When faced with challenges, where do you turn to?

Every marriage has its own set of challenges and we have had our fair share as well. Our Christian faith is the bedrock on which our marriage is based, and prayer is our first resort when we are faced with challenges. In addition, we have found mentors that have given us the right kind of advice and guidance to help address encountered challenges. Most marriages (today) end up on the rocks because of the strange voices speaking into them. So at the moment, we have surrounded ourselves with people whose marriages are actually working. We both listen to our mentors and observe what marriage is all about from their perspectives. It’s not enough to have good advice about marriage. It’s vital to get advice from people that actually have good marriages because those kinds of advisers actually put their words into actions.

Question: What’s your profession and how do you make time for each other?

We are both senior ministry pastors at our church. The model at our church is that we share the same portfolio as a couple; therefore, we work together in the ministry. Apart from that we jointly run a company that provides health/life coaching, counseling, motivational talks, team building workshops, sales/customer care training, general facilitation, and consultations for other companies.

In terms of making time for each other, we do spend most of our time together. However; we have also made it a point to have a date night once every week. During such devoted times, we put our work aside and just enjoy being together. We also do lunch dates regularly. We have learnt that marriage does not mean you stop dating each other. We also try not to bring any work related issues home.

Background on Heart Failure

While recognizing that heart failure is a serious health condition which cannot be taken for granted, it’s important to emphasize that it does not necessarily means that the heart has stopped beating. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is incapable of pumping sufficient blood and oxygen needed to support other organs in the body. Conditions that damage the heart also increase the risk for heart failure and examples include coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Some symptoms of heart failure includes fatigue, shortness of breath, increased heart rate, edema (swelling in the ankles, feet, legs, abdomen, and veins in the neck), and persistent coughing or wheezing.

About 5.8 million people in the United States have heart failure, and this figure is projected to increase. Another interesting fact about heart failure reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is that; in 2009, one in 9 deaths included heart failure as a contributing cause. In addition, the annual estimated economic burden (i.e., direct and indirect cost) of treating heart-failure patients in the United States is estimated be $32 billion.

The risk of heart failure is more common in the elderly (particularly those aged 65 years or older). However; when compared to individuals from other races, African Americans have a higher prevalence of heart failure with research findings showing that they even present symptoms of this condition at a much younger age. In a particular; according to a study funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, as many as 1 in 100 black men and women develop heart failure before the age of 50, a rate which was 20 times the incidence in whites in the same age group. In the same study, heart failure developed in black participants at an average age of 39, and this was often preceded by risk factors such as high blood

The noted disparity of heart failure in African Americans underscores the importance of recognizing and reducing its risks factors. A lifestyle change such as having a healthy diet can be very instrumental in preventing this condition. Such a diet would be composed of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy products and protein foods such as eggs, poultry without skin, beans, and lean meat.

A healthy diet would also include one which is low in added sugar, sodium (salt), and solid fats. A diet containing excess salt can cause accumulation of extra fluid in the body; thereby making heart failure worse, while saturated fat can cause unhealthy blood cholesterol levels, which are a risk factor for heart disease. Be sure to consult your doctor and health care team on a comprehensive eating guide that helps reduces the risk of heart failure.

A healthy diet plays a significant role in reducing the risk for heart failure

In addition to a healthy diet, avoiding or quitting tobacco consumption can help reduce the risk for heart failure. According to the CDC, cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including an estimated 42,000 annual deaths among adults which results from secondhand smoke exposure. In addition, the annual cigarette smoking-related mortality in the United States tends to be higher in men.

In addition to heart failure, smoking also contributes to the risk of developing stroke, diabetes mellitus, lung cancer, pneumonia, influenza, coronary /rheumatic heart disease, emphysema, bronchitis, and chronic airway obstructions. A plethora of medication and counseling services are available to help quit smoking; therefore, seek advice from your medical provider.

Other lifestyle changes that also helps reduce the risk for heart failure includes working to maintain a healthy weight (especially for obese individuals), being physically active, and refraining from using illegal drugs. The heart of the matter is that heart failure is common among African Americans and men have a higher rate of this condition than women.

The Flash Column

The word of God as the most important message

By Samuel Kalenzi

Christians should never underestimate the importance of embracing the word of God (written in the bible) as the absolute truth. While recognizing the importance of miracles and breakthroughs, they are not guaranteed to provide sustenance; however, the word of God will. A desire for a better tomorrow definitely requires acquiring, understanding, and following the word of God.

A Christian’s foundation should be inundated with the word of God. What does His word say about your particular circumstances? Are your circumstances based on psychology, varied religions, or the experiences and words of man? What does the word of God say about your success, healing, grace, and forgiveness? It’s imperative to embrace the word of God because it’s the truth; it’s your absolute foundation, compass, yardstick, and everything needed to live a fulfilled Christian life (Psalms 119:97-105).

Rather than reading the word of God for the sole purpose of acquiring blessings, indulge in this activity to build and have a better relationship with Him. The Israelites clearly knew God by His works and not by His ways. In the same manner, Christians can also be inclined to the works of God rather than His ways. Read the bible to know more about God, and He will provide clarity on some of the aforementioned questions posed in the second paragraph as well as others which you may be struggling with.

The truth of the matter is, “What you don’t know is robbing you of something that you want.” His word clearly says that we are destroyed from the lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). Therefore, seek knowledge from the word of God; the same word will help build your faith in Him. The faith (in question) boils down to the word of God. As in, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17).

The Flash ColumnForgive and move onBy Paul Ebohon

“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you; leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift (Matthew 5:23-24). And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins (Mark 11:25).

Holding grudges and refusing to forgive offenses made by family members and colleagues basically renders your offerings useless in God's sight. How do you expect God to forgive you, when you refuse to forgive others? If you have deliberately made a decision to wallow in an unforgiving spirit, you might as well forget about praying to God. Today should be a day where you choose to forgive your offenders.

Meditate on these things

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you (Philippians 4:8-9).

By Paul Kalusa

If God created us for his pleasure and we are to be people that worship him alone; it is therefore of paramount importance to conduct ourselves in a godly manner. One of these required codes of conduct to God is worshipping Him in truth and in spirit. If earthly rulers have ways in which their subjects pay homage to them, does the King of Kings and Lord of Lords not deserve His due respect?

When we worship God, He turns the tides in our favor. When we worship God, doors are opened and healing comes forth. In other words, God's power in us is activated through worship. The presence and power of God in our lives is (directly) proportional to the level of our worship. If we want more of God's presence and power in our lives, it's of utmost importance that we worship Him wholeheartedly.
