1.0 Goal

The goal of this document is to provide a simple, concise overview of Liaison software operation. This information

can be used as a training tool or user guide. The Liaison Glossary/Acronym guide is included with this document as an

appendix.

1.1 Targeted Audience

The Liaison Agent User Guide is targeted towards non-technical Liaison users. Examples are provided for each topic

covered from a non-technical perspective. Individual airline trainers and supervisors are encouraged to provide

additional functionality examples as needed.

2.0 What is Liaison?

LIAISON is a software application created by SITA‟s Specialized Design and Development team. The Liaison product

line is designed to provide terminal emulation access to Unisys and IBM mainframes. It also provides a graphical user

interface (GUI) to 3 existing mainframe legacy applications, Check-in, Boarding and Worldtracer.

For users with scripting requirements, Liaison provides a scripting tool called Liaison Script Assistant to help simplify

the script-writing process. This feature is intended for use by technical support personnel with programming language

backgrounds and will not be addressed in depth for this guide.

Liaison runs on Windows 95/98, Windows NT & Windows 2000 and is fully certified on the SITA CUTE and ARINC

MUSE platforms`. Using Windows NT Terminal Server, Liaison can also run on thin client terminals.

Users of Liaison have their choice of three communication types:

TCP/IP

X.25

X.28 dial-up.

2.1 Liaison Basics

After installation of Liaison software on a user workstation, the application can be accessed via desktop icon. The

Liaison icon is a graphical representation of a globe (planet).

Liaison Icon

Double-clicking on this icon launches the Commander toolbar. The Commander toolbar serves as a central access

point to all Liaison sessions. All configured Liaison sessions appear on the Commander toolbar as icons. Double

clicking an icon on the toolbar will open the corresponding session. Separate sessions must be used for different GUI

applications. For example, an agent using both Checkin and Boarding applications would need to have a session

configured for each.

2.2 Access to Liaison Sessions

Most users of Liaison begin their use of the product after session configuration. In this case, required sessions are

already available as icons on the Commander toolbar once Liaison is launched.

Launching a Session – To launch a session, double-click the session icon on the Commander toolbar. Depending on

the configuration of the session, it will open either as an emulator window or a GUI for a specific application.

Once the Liaison session window has opened, the session name description can be located in the title bar on the upper

left side of the window.

3.0 Liaison Session Features

The Liaison emulator window offers various tools and options to the user. These options are accessible from the

Liaison pulldown menus (such as File, Edit, etc) and also via toolbar icon. The session status bar (bottom of session

window) displays connect status, capture status, emulator type, date/time and row/column information. Varying

statuses such as message wait indicators and system wait indicators are also displayed on the session status bar.

3.1 Liaison Basic Features

The following features are considered basic aspects of Liaison usage.

3.1.1 Session Connection/Disconnection and Sign-in.

To connect to the SITA network, a user must provide a login username and password for terminal security. Usernames

and passwords for agents are requested from SITA by Airline Headquarters. Login information can be provided during

session configuration or provided by the user at each session launch. When the user login is provided during session

configuration, the session will automatically log the user in at each session launch. If user login information is not

provided during configuration, the user will be prompted to enter it (system response: “ENTER USER

ID/PASSWORD”) at each session launch.

Note: Liaison‟s default transmit key is <scroll lock>. (Section 4.3)

Once a user has logged into the SITA network, an Agent Sign-in is required to advance further. Agent Sign-ins are

assigned by and must be requested from a user‟s Airline Headquarters. A general sign-in consists of the following

information:

Example: SIXS###/####a/##

SI <sign-in>

XS <airline> (optional depending on airline setup –

please verify with agent supervisor) ###/ <agent number>

####a/ <password>

## <usergroup> (can be up to 3 digits)

Session Time-Outs

Session connects are given a 30 second window of connect time, after which the session will be timed out. Liaison will

respond to a time-out event by prompting the user to disconnect or reconnect the session.

3.1.2 Switching between GUI and Emulator windows

When a Liaison session is launched, the working window will open to a default setting either as an emulator window

or a GUI window. These settings are determined during configuration and before the first use of the session. From an

emulator window default launch, the GUI for the application being used can be accessed by clicking the File pulldown

window and selecting Back to “”GUI”” (GUI application name can be „Checkin‟, „Boarding‟, „WorldTracer‟, etc).

Emulator Window – Accessing GUI

Once a user has accessed a GUI window for an application, “Expert Mode‟ must be selected from the GUI pulldown menu

to return to the emulator window. Commands executed in the GUI window will appear as Gabriel commands in the

emulator window. For example, if a passenger list is accessed in the GUI window, the same listing will appear in the

emulator window if the user returns to expert mode. Please refer to Appendices B, C & D for examples of other application

GUIs.

3.1.3 Working with Split Screens

Liaison Split Screens are additional emulator screens used to display different functions and results within the same

session. Liaison provides split screen capability for emulator sessions to allow the user the ability to switch between

different functions without losing existing data on any individual screen. Liaison features the ability to work in as

many as five split screens for a single session. Liaison users can toggle between split screens by pressing <ctrl> +

<tab>.

Split Screen Setup

The Liaison split screen setup window can be accessed by clicking the „View‟ pulldown menu, then clicking „Split

Screen‟ / „Setup‟.

Split screen menu options

The resulting window gives the user the option to select up to five split screens, each identified by a letter (A, B, C,

D) and the original session name in the title bar. For users who will access split screens frequently, there is an option

to automatically split screens at session launch.

Clicking „OK‟ in this window will launch the split screens.

Maneuvering between split screens

Liaison split screens can be arranged on a user‟s desktop in a tile (side by side) or cascade (overlapping) format. These

options are accessible from the split screen pulldown menu and can be used once split screens have been launched.

The „Split‟ option in the split screen menu allows the user to access split screens at any point during an open session.

The „Shrink‟ option will close split screens, leaving the original session window open.

Use of split screens allows the user greater flexibility between transactions without losing convenient screen data.

Different types of transactions can be delegated to a specific screen without affecting other split screen windows. For

example, an emulator main window may be used to display and refresh a complete passenger list, while:

Split Screen A is used to process passengers with special needs

Split Screen B is used to process passengers to be „unchecked‟

Split Screen C is used to process standby passengers

Split Screen D is used to process walkup passengers without reservations.

3.1.8 SOE Options

In the context of use with Liaison, SOE is an acronym for „Start of Entry‟. Start of Entry is the point at which an

emulator screen will accept commands from the user. Commands entered at a location where there is no SOE will not

be accepted by the Liaison emulator. Liaison offers different methods for users to place the SOE at the desired location

on the emulator screen:

Home Location

The „home location‟ on the Liaison emulator is the first row, first column of the screen. Commands entered at this

point will be accepted by the emulator without an SOE character being present.

3.2.2 Screen Captures

A screen capture is the process during which the user records or „captures‟ emulator command inputs and results for a

specified period of time. The recorded commands and results can then be saved to a text file for future use or appended

onto an existing file.

Screen capturing is ideal for use in recording and documenting errors, processes or specific settings and parameters.

For example, if a user encounters an error in processing, screen capture could be used to document that error for

correction efforts. Screen capture can also be used to document processes for example use or as future reference

material for other agents. For rarely used processes that require complicated command sequences, screen capture can

be used to record the codes and parameters used and the format of process results.

Screen capture can be launched by clicking the „File‟ pulldown menu and selecting „Screen Capture‟ or it can be

accessed by toolbar icon.

3.2.3 Recording and Playback

Liaison offers the options of recording and playing back scripts and macros. These options are provided for use in

automating simple commands entered by the user. Detailed scripts requiring computer programming experience

should be handled by technical personnel and will not be addressed in this section.

3.2.3.1 Recording and Playback of Scripts

A script is a collection of functions or commands listed and performed in a specific order to automate and

complete a specific process or multiple processes. Scripts are best used for processes that are frequently

performed or processes that contain many steps. For example, if an agent would like to access a passenger list

and perform a number of generic commands in a single step, recording the commands as a script allows that

flexibility.

A script recording is the process during which the user records emulator commands inputs. The recorded

commands are then saved to a text file. Script recording can be launched by clicking the „File‟ pulldown menu

and selecting „Record Script‟ or by toolbar icon.

If the user chooses to Overwrite the existing file, the contents of the file will be replaced with the script being

currently recorded. If the user chooses to Append to the existing file, the current script contents will be

appended at the end of the existing script. If the user then would like to move commands to a different place in

the text file script, the cut/copy and paste commands within notepad.exe can be used.

Completing a Script Recording

Once a user has started recording a script, the status bar on / off indicator will display as „Recording ON‟. When

the script is complete, the user may end recording by clicking the „File‟ pulldown menu and selecting „Stop

Once a script has been selected, clicking „Open‟ will launch the script for editing. As Liaison saves script,

capture and snapshot files as „.txt‟ files, the open script will appear in notepad.exe.

Script recording only records commands entered into the emulator for playback. It does not record results of

commands entered into the emulator. The following is an example of part of a completed script. Please note that

„transmit‟ appears in the written script as „/X‟.

Script Example

1) da <transmit>

2) help: <transmit>

3) <tab> <tab> <transmit>

4) <tab> <tab> <transmit>

4.2 Options – Screen Size window

The Liaison „Screen Size‟ option gives the user the ability to change the emulator window‟s size by adjusting the rows

and columns. Using the mouse, Liaison emulator windows can be automatically sized by clicking and dragging the

bottom right corner of the screen. However, using the screen size window sets a default window size that remains

constant for each session launched in Liaison.

Screen size window

Note: The screen size in this window must match the screen size specified for the session‟s PID on the host. A

technician or supervisor is required to check the „CRTD‟ field of the CONLNK if a problem related to this feature

occurs.

4.3 Options – Key Mapper

The Liaison „Key Mapper‟ option gives the user the ability to change the mapping assignments for specific keyboard

keys. The window is split into three sections:

will be transmitted as the end of a command or if the character behind the cursor signifies the end of a command.

Uppercase text – this option allows the user to choose whether or not text entered into the emulator screen will appear

as all upper case or all mixed text.

CR also does EOL – this option allows the user to choose whether or not pressing the carriage return key signifies end

of line (text after the point of carriage return on a specific line will be deleted) or not signify end of line (text after the

point of carriage return on a specific line will be skipped over).

Invert colon key – this option allows the user to choose whether or not the colon key symbols will be inverted during a

Liaison session. For example, the colon key appears on the keyboard as:

:

; (Top line requires shift key)

Inverting this key will change it to:

;
