SECTION ONE - SOLVING REAL WORLD PROBLEMS

Encouraging a reduction in food wastage through

improved storage

Improving micro-farmers' access to markets

Identifying commodity point of origin

Improving efficiency through better information

Forecasting harvest and production levels/ limits

Improving return on investment

AgriTrace is:

SECTION ONE - SOLVING REAL WORLD PROBLEMS

BACKGROUNDApproximately one-third of all food is lost or wasted globally

Enough to feed 870 million people every year

48% of subsistence bananacrops are lost in Fiji due tolack of infrastructure

25% of root crops are lostin Fiji due to technicalinefficiency

Causes are connected to financial, managerial and technical limitationsin harvesting techniques, storageand cooling facilities in difficultclimactic conditions, infrastructureand marketing systems.

For example:

FOOD LOSSis "the decrease in quality or quantity of food"

SECTION TWO - DEFINING FOOD LOSSES

"The figures for food loss are hard to quantifyand are dependent on the types of foods and thecountries where they are produced butestimates in the range of 20-50%"

"Packaging that reduces condensation or theregrowth of bacteria will substantially reducefood loss. Intelligent packaging must beimplemented such as time temperatureindicators (TTI) which are devices or labels thatshow the accumulated time-temperaturehistory of food or other temperature sensitiveproducts."

Manage harvesting techniques

Develop storage and processing infrastructure

Find transport solutions

Encourage appropriate hygiene and food

handling practices

Maintain continuous improvement

Nations need help to:

INDIA

A number of factors contributed to the loss of grain in

India in the summer of 2012;

guaranteed purchase price increased 70% between

2007 and 2012

record bumper crops for five consecutive years

stockpiles amassed 12 times higher than the

national target (50 million tonnes)

inadequate storage infrastructure meant that grain

was exposed to summer heat and monsoon rains

SECTION THREE - EXAMPLES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

19 million tonnes of grainwere lost in 2012 alone

SECTION THREE - EXAMPLES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

CHINA / AUSTRALIA

In February 2015, Chinese berries became a national

issue in Australia after 18 cases of hepatitis A were

confirmed by the Department of Health.

Simultaneously, the agency responsible for food import

standards, Food Standards Australia New Zealand,

stated that outbreaks are "infrequent internationally

and rare in Australia".

Despite this, the contaminated berries were identified

as having been imported from the Chinese province of

Shandong, and reporting on the issue was widespread

and predominantly negative.

SECTION THREE - EXAMPLES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

CHINA / AUSTRALIA

All frozen berries linked to the outbreak were

immediately held and quarantined while the Australian

Department of Agriculture directed the responsible

food standards agency to conduct a "rigorous scientific

assessment of the risk status of frozen berries from

around the globe".

The effects of this event on the global supply chain,

including on Chinese producers and Australian

consumers, are multiplied by the time taken for the

responsible agencies to identify and then quarantine

the affected facilities.

How can we helpnations developthe solutions theyneed to thrive?

AgriTrace is a piece of software that provides

producers and consumers with a comprehensive

platform to trace the origins, quantity, quality, sale,

logistics and destination of any commodity or

produce.

Aggregation of produce from multiple farms or

orchards provides producers with the quantity to

justify and afford storage/ transport infrastructure.

In doing so, we have sought to create a platform that

is easy to use and which is available even in areas

with limited internet connectivity to help producers

and farmers to increase their investment returns.

HOW IT WORKS
