Evaluations at AIKYASpecial educators at AIKYA

    conduct evaluations to find the

current level of functioning of a

child with special needs. Then the

development goals are set and an

    Individualized Education Plan

(IEP) is drawn up for the child. The education also becomes

    really special and needs one-to-

one coaching as the needs of each

child is varied in the differently-

    abled spectrum.

No single test may be used as the

    sole measure to determine

whether a child has a disability.

    Or to determine an appropriate

    educational program for your

    child.

    Both formal and informal tests

    and other evaluation measures

    are important in determining the

    special education and related

services your child needs. To read

more about the different types of

    tests that are conducted click

    advocates on weekends.

    Storytelling at AIKYA

    Eight kids atAIKYAwere eager to

listen to the adventures of Kaala, the King Cobra on 17th Nov.

    Storyteller Anitha told the story.

As the kids were very young, a

    recollection of facts was helpful.

So, the kids repeated after the

    storyteller:

    The King Cobra sheds itsskin.

King Cobra does not haveears and eyelids.

King Cobra uses smell andits tongue to catch food.

King Cobra does not eatfood daily.

    The King Cobra hatchesfrom eggs.

The King Cobra is 15 feetlong.

And so on.... The kids had a look

at the colorful picture book. They

also created a forest using crayons

and sketch pens. The kids drew a

tree, river, a King Cobra, and

    birds. Finally, they mimicked a

    snake dance pose. The kids

recalled seeing a snake in TV.

    AIKYA thanks Pratham Books for

    their initiative and story book.

This was a nationwide event and

    happened simultaneously in 28

centers across 11 states and one

    union territory.

    AIKYA plans to launch AIKYA

    Online University

AIKYA plans to capitalize on the

    20 years of Ms. Parvathys

    experience and expertise in

    dealing with special children.

Who can be a better Subject

Matter Expert (SME) than her for

    e-learning courses on special

    needs?

    AIKYA is working on the

storyboards. It would be great if

we can have volunteers who can

do the Flash development andlaunch the course online. AIKYA

    looks forward to technical help.

A Thought for the New Year

Here are no sounds of discord

    no profane

    Or senseless gossip of unworthy

    things

Only the songs of chisels and pens,

    Of busy brushes, and ecstatic

    strains

    Of souls surcharged with music

    most divine

Here is no idle sorrow, no poor

    grief

For any day or object left behind

For time is counted precious, and

    herein

    Is such complete abandonment of

    Self

That tears turn into rainbows, and

    enhance

The beauty of the land, where all is

    fair.

    - James Allen
