St. Gianna Respect LifeSt. Gianna Respect LifeSt. Gianna Respect LifeSt. Gianna Respect Life On August 27 we celebrate the Feast Day of
St. Monica. She is the patron saint of mothers and wives, and the vocation of being a mother. She is also the patron saint of alcoholics, married women, and difficult marriages. Let us pray for all mothers and fathers to be good and holy examples for their children. Let us pray for all members of our families - for grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren. St. Monica prayed diligently for her children for years on end, so let us ask her to pray for the children and grandchildren in our lives! Let us pray for troubled marriages and for spouses who have no faith or have fallen away from the faith. Saint Monica endured a difficult and troubled marriage for many years. Let us pray for all those struggling with addiction, as well as for their loved ones. Saint Monica is the patron saint of alcoholics having personal experience with this pain. Let us pray for those who have fallen away from the faith. St. Monica prayed for the conversion of her son for 15 years. St. Augustine’s return to the faith impacts us still today. Ask St. Monica for her prayers for any intention you have --especially for the ones you have been praying about for a long time. Those seem to be her specialty! Nothing is impossible with God.
St. Monica Ladies’ Auxiliary St. Monica Ladies’ Auxiliary St. Monica Ladies’ Auxiliary St. Monica Ladies’ Auxiliary Today is the feast of St. Monica. She was a
prayerful, persistent wife and mother who
prayed for years for the conversion of
her husband and son. St. Monica saw the
baptism of her husband just one year before
his death, as well as the conversion of her
son, Augustine, who went on to be a bishop
and doctor of the church. St. Monica Ladies
Auxiliary honors our namesake today as an
example of unwavering persistence and
steadfast faith. Our Auxiliary offers an
avenue for all the women of the parish to
come together to share faith and fellowship.
We invite all women of the parish to join the
Auxiliary by coming to one of our gatherings
on the second Monday of each month at the
Columbian Hall. Mary Beth would be happy
to answer any questions at (989) 227-0088.
TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 27 2017
WE ARE ALL EVANGELIZERS
What i s the f i r s t thought that pops into your mind when you hear the word “contagious?” I s i t fear of a d i sease or i s i t your fa i th? My guess i s that i t i s the former , but in a newly re leased CD, a noted Cathol ic speaker and author a t taches i t to our fa i th . In Contagious Cathol ic i sm, Chr i s Ste fanick out l ines what he ca l l s the “seven habi t s of modern-day apost les” - a guide to evangel izat ion in th i s wor ld of re lat iv i sm. Though ninety percent of Amer icans be l ieve in God, S te fanick says more and more “we worship ourselves , we have no need for re l ig ion. ” As a cons equence, he s tates , even Chr i s t ians to a large part bend to popular opinion and loosen be l ie fs to a point where there i s no mora l s t ructure . To counter th i s , he ca l l s us to “be aggress ive about evangel izat ion. ” There ’s not enough room in th i s space to go over a l l seven habi ts S te fanick would l ike us to adopt , but let ’ s look at a few. By far , the most important habi t , he says , i s to “keep f i r s t th ings f i r s t . ” To that e f fect , we refer to the s ign seen at sport ing events for years , John 3 :16, which says “For God so loved the wor ld that he gave h is only begotten Son so that whoever be l ieves in h im shal l not per ish , but have eterna l l i fe . ” Cathol ic i sm i s a love s tory , not the sappy Ryan O Neal , A l i McGraw movie , but the s tory of God’s love for us . I f we don’t have God’s love s tory as the bas is for our evangel izat ion, Ste fanick says we represent nothing but ru les , regulat ions and doctr ines which put us , in society ’s v iew, on the wrong s ide of the socia l i ssues that dominate today ’s cu l ture . Another habi t S tefanick emphas izes i s that of not le t t ing fear d ictate our act ions . Many of us have had opportuni t ies to evangel ize in our l i ves , but let them s l ip by because we feared jeopard iz ing a re lat ionship or d idn’ t have the conf idence in our ab i l i ty to accurate ly present our re lat ionship wi th the Lord . To th i s point , S te fanick reminds us that courage i s not the oppos i te of fear , but i s the point where love i s s t ronger than our fear . We wi l l look at some of the other habits of modern-day apost les next week, but in the meant ime, let ’ s th ink long and hard about God’s love s tory and our ro le in i t . I can assure you i t i s much more than “never having to say you’re sorry . ” ———— By the Evangel izat ion TeamBy the Evangel izat ion TeamBy the Evangel izat ion TeamBy the Evangel izat ion Team

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
Saint Paul reminds us in today’s second reading that the ultimate origin of
everything is God. Since everything
comes from God, we are God’s own. We can never put God in our debt.
There is absolutely no negotiating with
God. Every breath we take is a gift.
Every good deed we perform is grace. Good stewards realize they are created
and called to make the beauty,
greatness, compassion and justice of God and his gifts known throughout the
world. The stewardship question for us is
whether we are willing to embrace this call, acknowledge our dependence on
God and give our lives over to him
completely for this purpose.
