MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Peace and good! As we prepare to celebrate 2019 – a new year – it is a good time to reflect upon our blessings of the past year and the priorities for 2019. As I was reflecting upon what might be a few of my New Year’s resolutions, I was reminded of the following 10 things that Pope Francis (2017) called upon his Vatican employees to do:

1. Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and eve-rything we are.

2. Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, atten-tion and love.

3. Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faith into life and your words into good works, espe-cially on behalf of the needy.

4. Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly decadence.

5. Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, for-giving those who have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others.

6. Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion and with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord.

7. Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings that devour our interior peace and transform us into destroyed and destructive people.

8. Watch out for anger that can lead to vengeance; for lazi-ness that leads to existential euthanasia; for pointing the finger at others, which leads to pride; and for complaining continually, which leads to desperation.

9. Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker … the elderly, the sick, the hungry, the homeless and strangers, because we will be judged on this.

10.Making sure your Christmas is about Jesus and not about shopping.

It’s still a timely and good list: it’s clearly rooted in Catholic teachings. May we continue to be open to the guidance and blessings of the Holy Spirit during this New Year! In the peace of Francis of Assisi, Father Tom Reference: Francis. (2017). Pope Francis’ suggested New Year’s resolu-tions. Vatican.

The Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming

On Sunday, January 6th (The Epiphany) during the 1:00 p.m. Mass, St. Joseph’s Parish will be having the “Rites of Ac-ceptance and Welcoming.” These two rites are part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.). The rite of ac-ceptance is for the unbaptized adults and is the first step in which they will be received into the Order of Catechumens. As catechumens they will commit themselves to learning and growing in the Catholic Faith. The rite of welcoming is for those baptized Christians of another faith who desire to be-come Catholic and those Catholics seeking to complete their Christian Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist). This year our parish has 6 children and 8 adults in RCIA (English) who will be presented by their sponsors. Please pray for them as they make their journey toward Christ and His Church.

THANKS TO OUR SPONSOR OF THE WEEK

Peace and good! We thank you for your prayers, support, kindness, cards, and gifts shared with us during the Christmas Season. Know that we appreci-ate your thoughtfulness. Be assured of our prayers.

Please join the Knights of Columbus in praying a Novena for Life leading up to the March for Life. For nine consecutive days, from January 10-18, we ask that you add a short respect life prayer to your daily prayers. Prayer cards in English and in Spanish will be available at all Masses on the weekend of January 5-6. Please join your prayers with ours during these nine days (and beyond!) to build a culture of life. Especially for Bishop Burbidge and the sick of our parish:

Update on St. Joseph Ladies Society The Ladies have been busy this Advent and Christmas season. “The Ladies’ never cease to amaze me with their support and willingness to help. The Youth Dinner was a huge success and it was all thanks to the volunteers. The diocese had nothing but praises to sing from beginning to end.” A big thank you to the Ladies who showed up to help, even during this busy sea-son. Our Christmas gathering was filled with lots of food, drink and friendship. Thank you for the wonderful food and con-versation. We are blessed! Our Mini-Retreat and Day of Recollection, was well-attended. We would like to thank Fr. Jordan, our Retreat Director, for his insight, inspiration and leadership at the Mini-Retreat and for the Ladies who attended. The Ladies prepared a meal at the Hypothermia Shelter in Reston for 40+ Homeless. Thank you to all who cooked and served. We also participated in providing gifts for the Embry Rucker Shelter gift exchange program. Many of the ladies bought toys and other requested gifts to help make this program suc-cessful. Thank you. Christmas, 2018

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In hope, we rejoice this Christmas, for a light will shine on us this day: the Lord is born for us. On Christmas and each day this coming year, may we seek this Light before all else and allow it to radiate within our diocese, homes and communities.

Even in the midst of the darkness we experience within our world, nation and

Church, we are filled with joyful hope as we celebrate the truth that Jesus, our Lord andSavior and the Light of the World, has dispelled the darkness. Therefore, with trust andconfidence, we dare to pray for one another. We pray for all who lead and serve within the Church, that enlightened by the new radiance of God's incarnate Word, what we know in faith will shine through our deeds. We pray that God will show our civil leaders the way of truth , guiding them to defend the sacredness of all human life. We pray that the whole human family will imitate the Holy Family in practicing virtue and in the bonds of charity. We pray that those in need will experience the radiance of God's love in and through our generosity, goodness and sacrifices. Finally, we pray that we, who know God already by faith, may pass through the shadows of this world to reach the brightness of our eternal home.

Please be assured of a special remembrance at the Masses I will celebrate on

Christmas. Through the intercession of Mary our Mother and Saint Joseph, may Our LordJesus Christ fill you with the gift of his peace and favor this Christmas and always.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge Bishop of Arlington
