MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

In Baptism we are reborn as children of God, made members of His Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome these children of God who were baptized on June 14, 2015: Sadie Kay Frickman daughter of Andrew & Catherine; Camden Enrique Rice son of William & Adriana

Peace and good!

As we continue to reflect upon the gift of the Eucharist during the month of June, I would like to share a few insights from the Franciscan tradition and spirituality. Francis of Assisi had a great personal devotion to Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. His first admonition on the Holy Eucharist could not have been more precise. He writes:

Behold, each day he humbles Himself as when he came from the royal throne into the Virgin’s womb; each day He himself comes down to us, appearing humbly; each day He comes down from the bosom of the Father upon the altar in the hands of the priest. As He revealed himself to the holy apostles in true flesh, so He reveals himself to us now in sacred bread. (Adm 1:16-19)

Francis stresses that the sacrament is a symbol of the poverty and humility of Christ.

This past week a few parishioners asked me: “what do I do” during Eucharistic Adoration. I shared with them the wisdom of Clare of Assisi. Clare wrote to one of her sisters: “gaze upon [Him], consider [Him], contemplate [Him] as you desire to imitate [Him]” (2LAg 20). Clare followed a four step process as she set time aside for prayer, meditation, and praying before the Blessed Sacrament. The steps of meditation were:

• Gaze; • Consider; • Contemplate; and • Imitate

Clare’s path of prayer consisted of a deep mutual relationship with God. It began with gazing upon the Crucified Christ; then moved inward toward self-reflection, identity and transfor-mation; and finally outward so that she could radiate God’s face to the world. Clare invited Agnes to gaze, consider, and contemplate three moments of Christ’s life: the poverty of his birth, the humility of his life, and the charity of his passion.

The Real Presence of Jesus allowed Clare the most profound intimacy with God, and she strongly encouraged her sisters to transfer that kind of intimacy to every aspect of their life together. Eucharistic living had very practical consequences in San Damiano. Poverty of spirit, that is, generosity in word, action, and prayer, became hallmarks of the “life.” May we experience Jesus’ presence in the Blessed Sacrament as Francis and Clare did in their lives.

This weekend we take time to ask God to bless all fathers, those living and deceased. We thank God for their vocation and the gift of fatherhood. Pope Francis shared this prayer for fathers: “I ask that you have the grace to be very close to your children, letting them grow, but being by their side. They need you, your presence, to be there, your love!” We wish each father a blessed and happy Father’s Day. References: Armstrong, R. (Trans.). (2006). The Lady: Clare of Assisi: Early Documents. “Wake Up The World” 2015

Year of Consecrated Life

Each week we will have insightful quotes and reflections on consecrated life.

For each one of us, there is only one thing necessary: to fulfill our own destiny, according to God’s will, to be what God wants us to be. —Thomas Merton

ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH HERNDON, VIRGINIA TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME June 21, 2015

The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish ministries: We wish to thank the parishioners who share their gifts and talents in the Music Ministry of the parish. Saint Augustine says that "he/[she] who sings to God prays twice." This quote gives some insight into the importance of music in our Liturgy and the importance of the Music Ministry in our parish. We are grateful to all who contribute both their time and talents to our Liturgical celebrations. A special thank you to our director of music, choir, cantors, musicians, Spanish choir, hand bell choir, and all those involved in music ministry. We wish to thank the new altar servers who begin this new ministry during the months of June and July. We look forward to their ministry during our celebration of the Eucharist. Once again, we wish to thank the catechists/trainers of the parish’s altar servers. Know that we appreciate the time which you have committed to their training.

PLEASE MAKE A NOTE: The St. Joseph Parish Facility will be shut down for the month of July for maintenance. No meetings will take place during the month of July. However, during this time, the parish office will still remain open. If you are planning a Baptism in the Fall, please contact Armando or Patty Navarro at 571-283-5127 for more information to plan a Baptism in Spanish.
