MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Blessing of Throats in Memory of St. Blaise In memory of St. Blaise, we will have the Blessing of the Throats at all the Masses next weekend, February 1-2. Eucharistic Ministers scheduled for the Masses will be asked to assist the priest with the blessings. Please call the parish office if you have any questions or concerns. Feast of Candlemas - February 2nd - The

Blessing of the Candles - Simeon called Jesus “a light to the nations.” The light to Jesus’ presence in the world has been celebrated on this day, February 2nd, for many centuries. The Presentation of the Lord, “Candlemas” is a feast of light. Traditionally, on this feast, or close to the feast enough candles are blessed to last the whole year. On the weekend of February 1-2, you are invited to bring a candle from home to represent all candles in your home to be lighted on birthdays baptismal anniversaries, first Holy Communion, and in sickness. You are asked to place your candle near the basket in front of the altar before Mass. Please remember to collect your candle after Mass.

Perhaps I’m still having withdrawals that the Christmas decorations are down, but as I re-read this column, I felt the need to put some type of disclaimer on it. This column is not intended to point fingers or is not directed at anyone in particular, it is not meant to be a ‘gripe’ column it’s just some things I’ve observed as well as some rumblings I’ve heard from other parishioners. A recent poll in USA Today asked, “where do you secretly use your smart phone?” I was frustrated that 52% of the people who responded said that they use them in places of worship. (I’m optimistic that none of these responses were from people in our parish, and I’m sure the word ‘secretly’ excludes people who use these devices for following the Church readings.) But it makes me wonder when we became a people who need to be continually connected to others 24/7? Does consistently being available increase the stress that so many of us feel? Yes, I know I’m old but when did our egos begin to tell us that we are so important that we need to be available any time during the day or night? And, yes, of course I know that some jobs require us to be always available, but is there any down time / quiet time for us? Are shower phones next? I wonder if in the future they will find that our always being available or being continually connected to social media affects our brains in the same way that drugs do; making one addicted and dependent waiting for the next ‘hit’ of updating our status or tweeting what we had for lunch. Have we become so entitled that common courtesy is almost eradicated from even the churches? We may think we’re not disturbing others in using these devices, but when we use them in church to text others during Mass, or to check the latest Redskin/Nationals score, or to let children play video games during Mass these things now become distractions to those around you. I’ve seen the glow of these devices from the altar, and people have mentioned it to me when leaving Mass that they were distracted (one person did use the word appalled) by the disrespect some people’s behavior showed with usage of phones and devices. And speaking of being aware of where we are and why we come to church I’d ask those who come a little late to be mindful of what is going on once Mass has started. I know how easy it is to run into traffic or the parking situation here, but I’d ask you to remember that the readings are not some essay or narrative. The readings are the Word of God, they are God speaking to us. To walk down the aisle not paying attention to what God is saying is not only disrespectful to God but also to those seated who are trying to listen (provided they’re not playing secretly on their smart phones). If you do run a little late, I would encourage you to wait in the lobby until the end of the first reading. Feel free to ask an usher to help you in finding a seat for you and your family, they’d be happy to help you. Well, if you read this far thinking that I’m going to be crabby until next Christmas, let me pass on to you what was passed on to me. A priest was walking along the corridor of the parochial school near the preschool wing when a group of little ones were trotting by on the way to the cafeteria. One little lad of about three or four stopped and looked at him in his clerical clothes and asked about the priest's plastic collar tab. The priest took it out and handed it to the boy to show him. On the back of the tab in raised letters is the name of the manufacturer. The little guy felt the letters, and the priest asked, "Do you know what those words say?" "Yes I do," said the lad who was not old enough to read. Peering intently at the letters he said, "Kills ticks and fleas up to six months!" Have a great week everyone.
