MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Peace and good! Today we begin the third week of the Advent Season, a season that invites us to reflect upon our relationship with God as we prepare for Christmas. As shared previously, there are many themes associated with the Advent Season. Four common themes are hope, peace, joy, and love. During the third week of Advent, let us pray for joy. The International Inter-Franciscan Commission for Justice and Peace offers the following insight into one’s understanding of Francis’ embrace of “perfect joy.”

At that time he continued to experience perfect joy alt-hough he was ill, suffering the physical wounds of Jesus and the psychological discouragement of disappointment in his brothers. His joy in pain was not masochistic but was an honest acknowledgement of his pain and injury, accompanied by the surprising Joy of being sustained in that injury. There had to be a grace, or Someone, support-ing him in his suffering. Francis' joy came with the recog-nition that God's Spirit was sustaining him in his most painful situations. The Holy Spirit, the "General Minister", helped Francis to understand rather than be understood, to console rather than be consoled, to love rather than be loved. Franciscan joy is not a naive denial of human suf-fering and problems. It is a conviction that despite all that is bad in life, God's Spirit is always within us, in others and in Creation. Joy kept Francis from growing bitter in the midst of suffering and disappointment.

It is interesting to note, that John’s Gospel states: "[Jesus] came to his own and his own people did not accept him" (Jn 1:11). Francis expresses his vocation to follow Jesus with the passage on "perfect joy," which represents the same content we read in John’s Gospel. Francis’ embrace of “perfect joy” makes a great deal of sense. May we embrace both joy and “perfect joy” in our daily lives. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI offers the following insight re-garding joy as we prepare for Christmas:

Joy is the true gift of Christmas, not the expensive gifts that call for time and money. We can communicate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help, for-giveness. And the joy we give will certainly come back to us.…Let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives.

Poinsettias for the Altar

Boy Scout Troop 913 will be accepting dedications for the flowers that will adorn the Saint Joseph's altar during the Christ-mas Season. Boy Scouts will be in the ves-tibule of the church after Mass this week-end December 15-16. Recommended do-nation for dedications is $15.00. This is a

lovely way to remember loved ones during this blessed season.

The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish min-istries:

We thank our parishioners who ministered at the Annual Dioc-esan Youth Appreciation Mass and Dinner. We thank the youth who volunteered as altar servers for the Mass, those who served as greeters at the dinner; the parents who had oversight of the youth volunteering; and our Parish Facilities/Kitchen/Event crew who prepared with the set-up and preparations for the meal and Mass. We thank our parishioners who supported the “Gift for Life Christmas Tree.” These donations support the Gabriel Pro-ject/Project Rachel of Arlington. We thank our parishioners who supported the Christmas Poin-settia Sale overseen by the Boys Scouts. Many blessings! We wish to thank the parishioners who share their gifts and talents as Lectors who proclaim the Word of God during the daily and weekend Masses. Their ministry allows us to hear and respond to God present among us during Eucharistic Litur-gies, Prayer Services, and Penance Services. Know that we are grateful to the coordinator and trainer of the lectors and all the lectors for their proclamation of the Word. “As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand’” (Matthew 10:7). We wish to thank the parishioners who share their gifts and time as Ushers. For some, this is often a misunderstood minis-try during the weekend liturgies. Know that we are grateful for the ministry of the ushers for they welcome arriving parishion-ers and guests to our liturgies, assist and direct with seating, collect the offering, direct the orderly flow of communicants, pass out the parish bulletin, straighten the pews after Mass, help in emergencies, and aid the clergy. Jesus said, "Whoever welcomes you, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the One who sent me" (Mt. 10:40).

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the people of St. Joseph Catholic Church who contr ibuted to an outstand-ingly successful LINK Holiday Collection. Overall contribu-tions totaled over 1 1/2 tons of food and $4,956.00 in monetary donations. This will go a long way in supporting LINK in its mission to help those in our own neighborhoods, who are food challenged, have the resources they need in this Christmas sea-son. A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph Men’s Society who helped in the collection and the delivery of the food to the LINK pantry storage at Christ the Redeemer.
