MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK Peace and good! As you know, the Diocese of Arlington asked us to support an increased offertory program during the fall months. The pastoral staff and the Parish Advisory Council (PAC) selected the month of November for this program. Dur-ing the month of November, you received the following infor-mation regarding this program:

• weekly bulletin reflections on the gift of stewardship – Time, Talent, Treasure;

• letter from the pastoral staff focusing on the increased offertory program, Faith Direct, and monthly/annual dona-tions; and

• request from the PAC and pastoral team for each of us to reflect upon the time, talent, and treasure which we share with the parish community.

As shared in the previous reflections, we often speak of stew-ardship in the context of "the three t's": time, talent, and treas-ure. Stewardship is a way of life and our relationship with Christ is at the heart of it all. I offer the following description of stewardship – sharing treasure:

A good steward of treasure purchases goods and ser-vices prudently and knows the difference between needs and wants. A good steward sets aside part of his or her income for the Church and makes a gift to the Lord that is prayerful, proportionate, planned, and sacrificial. The faithful steward gives in a significant way, all in gratitude for the Lord’s gift upon the Cross. (Mahan, 2008)

We invite each member of our parish community to consider making an increase in their regular support for our parish. We hope each parishioner will play a conscientious role in shaping the future of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Over the past few weeks, several parishioners asked me the following two ques-tions:

How much should I increase my offering? Only you can decide what is appropriate for you and your family. A meaningful increase by all of the faith-ful of our parish will make an impact on the parish and its proclaiming the Gospel. What if I cannot increase my offering at this time? While it is our hope that this increased offertory pro-gram will have a significant, positive impact on our offertory, I am particularly interested in hearing from our parishioners of how they can share the gifts of their time, talents, and treasure. Not everyone is in a po-sition to increase their financial support. However, everyone can respond by sharing their time and talent.

Father Tom’s Column Cont’d… May each of us pray how we can share our time, talent, and treas-ure in our response to embrac-ing the Gospel. We invite every-one to pray for the success of this appeal. Many blessings! In the peace of Francis of Assisi, Father Tom, TOR

As we prepare to begin a new liturgical year, we give thanks and offer blessings upon the ministries of music, lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers, ushers, sacristans, altar linen care, altar server robe care, art and environ-ment, church cleaning crews, SJC facility staff, etc. We offer our congratulations and prayers to Father Tom Bourque, TOR, on the occasion of his Anni-versary of Priestly Ordination. P A A A W Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of Ad-vent. Ideally, three candles are purple and one is rose, but white candles can also be used.

The purple candles in particular symbolize the pray-er, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas.

The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge the living and the dead.

B A W

The use of the Advent Wreath is a traditional prac-tice which has found its place in the Church as well as in the home. The blessing of an Advent Wreath takes place on the First Sunday of Advent or on the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. When the blessing of the Advent Wreath is celebrat-ed in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another member of the family. All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Preparing for Advent Cont’d… Response (R/.) Who made heaven and earth. Then the Scripture, Isaiah 9: (lines 1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (lines 16-17 & 19) or Isaiah 64 (lines 2-7) is read: Reader: The Word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. With hands joined, the leader says:

Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. The blessing may conclude with a verse from “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”:

O come, desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of humankind; bid ev’ry sad division cease and be thyself our Prince of peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
