Pastor’s Chronicle It is distressing to read and hear news reports about the plight of some children, how some are abused, ne-glected, abandoned, forced to work in sweat-shops, or victims of human trafficking of which Houston is a major center for this evil. In the Catholic Church no one has spoken more forcefully and fearlessly about the child than Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. Some years ago this saintly woman had this to say about the child: “I appeal everywhere I go…Let us bring the child back to the center of our care and concern. The child is God’s gift to the family, being made in the special image and likeness of God for greater things. “This is the only way our world can survive because our children are the only hope for the future.” Children can teach us a lot. Jesus taught his bickering disciples the meaning of discipleship by placing a child in their midst and put his arms around the child saying: “Whoever welcomes a child such as this for my sakes welcomes me…And whoever welcomes me…welcomes Him who sent me.” [Mk 9: 30-37] Jesus’ gentle gesture of affection and protection is the assurance that every child and thus every hu-man being comes into this world wrapped in the loving arms of the Lord Jesus. This gesture is reason enough for each and all of us to rededicate ourselves to respect, educate, and protect the child, to do as Blessed Tere-sa bided us to do, namely, “to bring the child back to our center of care and concern.”

Fr. Bill

Padre Bill
