MISSALETTES

When the coronavirus struck, the missalettes were removed from the church as a safety precaution. Many parishioners enjoy the missalettes as a means of following the readings and participating more fully at Mass. The missalettes have been placed at the doors of church. Parishioners are invited to take a copy and keep it. This will be your own personal copy that you bring with you to church and take home after Mass.

PREP TEACHERS NEEDED

You are invited to join a team of teachers/instructors/volunteers who serve in our vibrant PREP program. CONFIRMATION 2022

Children in Religious Education Grades 7 & 8 will be eligible to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in 2022. Formation for this Sacrament begins this Fall for Grade 7 and continues next year (2021-22) for Grades 7 & 8. Students must be enrolled in Saint Colman PREP or a Catholic School that provides appropriate preparation and instruction. Children are required to complete both grades for our 2022 Confirmation.

SAINTS OF GOD COME TO OUR AID

SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA (October 23, 1491 – July 31, 1556)

Feast Day - July 31 The founder of the Jesuits was on his way to military fame and fortune when a cannon ball shattered his leg. During his convalescence, Ignatius spent time reading a life of Christ and lives of the saints. His conscience was deeply touched, and a long, painful turning to Christ began. Having seen the Mother of God in a vision, he made a pilgrimage to her shrine at Montserrat near Barcelona. He remained for almost a year at nearby Manresa, sometimes with the Dominicans, sometimes in a pauper’s hospice, often in a cave in the hills praying. After a period peace, he suffered a painful trial of scruples. When peace returned, Ignatius began to write material that later became his greatest work, the “Spiritual Exercises”. Ignatius spent the next 11 years in various European universities, studying with great difficulty. Many doubted his orthodoxy. In 1534, at the age of 43, he and six others vowed to live in poverty and chastity, to visit the Holy Land, and offer themselves in service of the Pope. Four years later Ignatius received Papal approval for the new Society of Jesus. He was elected as the first general. Ignatius was a mystic who centered his spiritual life on the Trinity, Christ and the Eucharist. The Jesuit motto, “Ad majorem Dei gloriam”, “for the greater glory of God,” reflects his emphasis on obedience as a means to insure the effectiveness and mobility of his men. All activity was to be guided by a true love of the Church and unconditional obedience to the Holy Father. The Jesuits are the largest community of priests in the world.

LOOK AHEAD: AUGUST 1-2, 2020 Below you will find the Scripture Readings for next Sunday. They provide material for reading and reflection to help you to prepare for Mass next weekend. Theme: Hunger and thirst are basic human needs that must be satisfied. Throughout the Bible, there are stories of God satisfying hungry and thirsty people. After God frees the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, he feeds them with manna and quail during their sojourn in the desert. The Promised Land, which God is giving them, is described as a land flowing with milk and honey. Through the prophet Isaiah, God promised to satisfy the hunger and thirst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus performs a miracle to satisfy his hungry followers. In every occasion, God satisfies needs with abundance. All of the feeding stories are meant to be previews. The ultimate feeding story is that of Jesus giving us his own body and blood in the Eucharist. First Reading Isaiah 55:1-3 Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.

Second Reading Romans 8:35, 37-39 Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Gospel Matthew 14:13-21 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me,” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.
