It’s that time again when travel retail buyers, suppliers, distributors and service providers from across the Americas meet in sunny Orlando for the annual International Association of Airport Duty Free Stores (IAADFS) Duty Free Show of the Americas. The largest of its kind in the region and a great place to network

in professional and social settings, the show offers a convenient means to get a large amount of business done in just a few short days.

Michael Payne, Executive Director of IAADFS, told us at press time that 185 companies will be exhibiting this year. The following chart provides a breakdown of booths by category:

CATEGORY NUMBER OF BOOTHSLiquor 51Fragrances and Cosmetics 41Jewelry, Accessories and Luggage 49Confectionery and Gourmet Food 21Tobacco 11Gifts and Writing Instruments 9Services 3Total 185

“The exhibitor response has been very positive this year,” Payne told us. “We are fortunate have such a loyal exhibitor base and the expectation is that we will be sold out at the show. It is a little early for attendance numbers [mid-January] but I can say we are experiencing a really good response and we should see a spike as the discount registration deadline approaches.”

In terms of sponsors at press time, Payne confirmed that beauty2market, Brown-Forman, Godiva, Hershey’s, Botran Rum, NJOY, Perfetti Van Melle, Philip Morris Duty Free and Travel Retail Distribution Group would be sponsoring events this year, with more companies likely to come onboard between our deadline and the actual exhibition.

Of course, a good sense of the attitude in the region can be gleaned from how quickly exhibition space has been sold. Con-sidering booth space at the 2014 IAADFS exhibition has been snapped up very quickly this year, it’s clear that people are ready to get down to business.

And in terms of the attitude of members this year, Payne told us that some key indicators for the industry have travel retail executives in high spirits: “The people I have spoken with seem very positive and upbeat this year, as they were last year, in my opinion. They are optimistic about the business, travel is up and investments are continuing in the stores.

“Honestly there are so many improvements and investments going on throughout the region that it is difficult not to be excited about all of them,” Payne said. “I think the really important point here is that every time an airport upgrades and enhances its duty free offering, the entire channel benefits because it helps underscore the attraction and cache that duty free shopping has to offer.”

with summer-ready bagsFounded in 1991, Joanel Inc. has become one of Canada’s most recognizable and successful handbag companies. Joanel now boasts over 2,000 clients across the globe and offers more than 350 new styles per year with the company’s various prod-ucts and lines remaining a staple in the duty free sector for over 20 years, explains Johanne Boivin, President, Chief Executive and Creative Officer, Joanel.

Joanel will be presenting its 2014 col-lection of products designed specifically for warm-weather use. Boivin says that Joa-nel’s presence at the IAADFS show is key to its enduring success in the travel retail arena, as the company uses the exhibition “to listen to our client base and to offer them what suits their needs.”

Joanel has a few exciting innovations prepared for this year’s show, including a new addition to its line of Mouflon bags. The bags, which are available for men and women, will be offered in a red and navy color scheme to reflect the current trend towards nautical-themed products. Joanel will also be unveiling special travel items geared towards consumers on the go, including weekender bags, roller business suitcases, and cosmetic bags.

Since its inception in the early 1990s, Rosetta Stone has established itself as one of the foremost purveyors of lan-guage-learning applications. With brand awareness topping 85% in North Amer-ica, the company offers a range of prod-ucts available in 24 different languages. Still available as a standard CD-ROM, Rosetta Stone has seamlessly made the shift into the 21st century by offer-ing its products as digital downloads and mobile applications. Kevin Martini, VP of Retail Sales & Marketing, says various solutions are used by “millions of individuals and tens of thousands of schools, businesses, and government organizations around the world.”

Rosetta Stone plans to launch a num-ber of new travel retail initiatives at this year’s IAADFS exhibition, where the company hopes to reinforce awareness of its long-standing retail success with airport kiosks, says Martini. The com-pany will be using the 2014 Duty Free Show of the Americas to accelerate its expansion into the duty free market-

place, which it aims to achieve by team-ing up with retail partners who share its vision. Rosetta Stone will “unveil new interactive demo stations with sleek, locking cabinets developed specially for duty free retail applications.”

With the company’s global aware-ness as a language-learning brand, Mar-tini says that Rosetta Stone is a perfect fit for the travel retail arena. He points to the success that Rosetta Stone has already had with a Dubai Duty Free chain of stores with the company’s products available at the retailer’s 12+ locations. In the Americas, Rosetta Stone has just completed a partnership for its products to appear in its duty free stores.

As the gold standard in technol-ogy-based language learning, Rosetta Stone’s success among travelers and business executives is hardly a surprise. The company’s new mobile solutions, available for Apple and Android devices, have made it easier than ever to learn a new language while on the go.

B+D offers compact series for travelersB+D will debut its new series of sunglasses at the upcoming IAADFS tradeshow in Orlando, designed with the traveler in mind. The Danish formed company that got its start in 1970 will be showcasing its products at the Orlando show at booth 2405.

The Folding collection is a new series of eyeglasses that utilizes a concept that will be applied to both the Sunglass and Reader product lines from the company. Its goal is to release a product that is fun, colorful, pocket-size, easy-to-carry, and could be the perfect gift as well.

The B+D Folding Readers are ultra-compact glasses that are designed for people on the move, with the ultimate portability in mind allowing them to fit perfectly in pockets, handbags or travel kits. Available colors include light blue-grey, matte brown-brown, matte metal-blue, dark grey-red, matte black-black and matte blue-brown.

The B+D Folding Sunglasses collection is designed to be a hip and fun accessory, easily carried in a pocket. The series comes with a practical exhibition display unit that can be used as a counter display or added to a sunglasses floor display in retail locations. Available colors for the series include matte salmon/crystal brown, matte tri-color, matte blue/demi blonde, matte brown/crystal brown, matte tri-color, matte green/crystal green and matte black/crystal.

Tyko Travel Retail has announced the appointment of Worldclassbrands as its official travel retail agent for the Americas. Worldclassbrands will be showcasing Tyko’s exciting portfolio at the IAADFS show, booth 730, including its range of Breo watches and sunglasses, One Tribe watches and Hippie Chic watches and bracelet sets.

Tyko Director Global Travel Retail Martin Lovatt says: “We’re delighted to be working with Worldclassbrands for the Americas. I have worked with them previously and have first-hand experience of their absolute professionalism, dedication and expertise within the market. They will initially be focussing on inflight sales for Breo – particularly the new Energy, Bag Buddy, and Twilight (Classic & Curve) ranges, along with the Hippie Chic Watch and Bracelet set and One Tribe collection.

“All of these will be exclusive to travel retail within the Americas market as we are not present on the domestic market in the region.”

Alongside airline sales, Worldclassbrands will be looking to develop the ground store business for Tyko using a new Breo self-select concept that the company is showing for the first time in Orlando.

“The time is most definitely right for Tyko brands within the Americas,” continues Lovatt. “We’re offering something really rather different to the market place – we see ourselves as a travel lifestyle brand bringing high volume sales from remarkably great value price points both for gifting and self-purchase.”

While Tyko has a strong distribution presence within Europe, the Middle East and Asia, the company felt that its move into the Americas would be better served by using a local expert. “Worldclassbrands provides us with the local knowledge and support that we need,” continues Lovatt.

Worldclassbrands President Lenny Di Cristofano says: “We are very pleased to be working with Tyko Travel Retail; its product range is perfect for the travel retail sector in the Americas, both inflight and on the ground, combining innovation with style, fashion and fun. We are looking forward to introducing the range to buyers at the Orlando show this year.”

Hawaiian Host prepares to dazzle in Orlando with new product offeringsHawaiian Host has announced that it will be highlighting its new products as part of the Chase International stand at this year’s Duty Free Show of the Americas. Hawaiian Host’s newest item, Coconut Caramacs, comes in a 5.3-oz package and is being launched globally. The latest creation features coconut and infused caramel mixed with dry roasted macadamia pieces covered in creamy milk chocolate and sprinkled with toasted coconut flakes.

Hawaiian Host will also be showing new packaging for its Maui Caramacs. These delicate dry roasted macadamias are smothered in Hawaiian Host’s exclu-sive house recipe caramel and covered with rich milk chocolate.

“We look forward to another great show in Orlando,” says Natalie Torres, Hawaiian Host Sales. “Business in the Americas has been excellent for us this year—our travel retail business is up by 12%. This year we will be focusing on more promotions to grow our business even further.”

Attendees to this year’s IAADFS exhi-bition can see Hawaiian Host’s products for themselves by visiting booth 1111.
