AMERICAS: IAADFS BIG EVENTS PREVIEW

All signs point to a successful 2015 show With nearly 30 new fi rst-time exhibitors this year, IAADFS says all the early signs are that this March’s Orlando Duty Free Show of the Americas (March 22-25) will be a very successful show. Charlotte Turner and Doug Newhouse report.

The International Association of Airport Duty Free Shops (IAADFS) points to early positive indicators such as registration numbers and

pre-booked accommodation as very encouraging, alongside the 183 exhibiting companies – and counting – that have confi rmed their attendance at the Orlando World Centre Marriott in March.

Not surprisingly, the organisers have been encouraged that most of those companies that exhibited in 2014 have reconfi rmed this year, with similar or more space to that booked in 2014.

Commenting on the progress with preparations to date, IAADFS Executive Director Michael Payne was characteristically upbeat: “We are delighted to be welcoming back so many of our exhibitors who have always been very supportive.

“We are also excited that during the last year we have added more than 50 new supplier members, many of whom are exhibiting for the fi rst time this year. We expect to have a full trade show fl oor.”

[The current and updated fl oor plan and exhibitor list can

be found at www.iaadfs.org/2015fl oorplan – Ed].Meanwhile, the association says that following

its successful introduction last year, IAADFS is once again off ering a single registration option.

This includes full access to the exhibition halls, plus all IAADFS-sponsored social events – including the Opening Reception, Gala Evening and the Club Americas.

Maximising visitor participationThe association says this helps to maximise visitor participation in all social events, making them more valuable as networking opportunities for attendees.

The traditional Sunday Sports Day programme will feature the golf tournament sponsored by American Caribbean Gateway/Macanudo Cigars, plus tennis, and a fun run/walk sponsored by Essence Corp that benefi ts the charity Escuela de la Calle. Pre-registration for the show remains open until the beginning of on-site registration on the morning of Saturday, March 21. «

AMERICAS: IAADFS BIG EVENTS PREVIEW

Prior to the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas, Charlotte Turner asks six of the region’s best-known retailers and suppliers to review last year’s show and tell us what they are expecting from the upcoming 2015 event.

ENRIQUE URIOSTECEO Neutral

What are you most looking forward to at the 2015 IAADFS Show of the Americas? As always, we look forward to see newness off ered by

suppliers; positive meetings to evaluate the business and to see people you don’t often meet.

What was your view of the show in 2014? Do you believe it was slower, the same or busier than in previous years?I think it was a very good show. The fact that we had more visitors than in 2013 and the positive feedback received at the IAADFS from suppliers and visitors, prove it.

What do you expect of the show this year?It is still early to say. The number of registrations, up to date (January 22) is keeping up with last year.

Can you predict what the mood might be like at this year’s Duty Free Show of the Americas?Concern and need to do more and better business. Because of the US dollar getting stronger worldwide; the oil crisis and the underperforming of many economies, 2015 will be a diffi cult year around the world and companies need to surf it.

A positive note: once again, nothing our industry has not seen before.

TIM YOUNGMarketing Director Brown-Forman Travel Retail, India/Middle East/Africa

What are you most looking forward to at the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas? We are looking forward to meeting our customers and

sharing plans for 2015 and beyond. We

also look forward to seeing our travel retail industry friends.

What was your view of the show in 2014? Do you believe it was slower, the same or busier than in previous years?IAADFS is always a busy show for us. Being a US company with many brands from the Americas it is a good platform for us to show customers our plans and what is new.

According to the TRBusiness Annual Survey (which appears in the January issue of TRBusiness magazine) the industry believes that the US will be mostly protected from major geo-political crises and potentially thrive in 2015. Do you agree with what the industry has to say? In our industry our sales will always be infl uenced by the spending power of key nationalities, no matter where you are in the world.

However, we are optimistic there will be continued international passenger growth in the US and sales growth overall.

We are also very optimistic about the continued growth of liquor sales, particularly at the premium level.

Within liquor we see further high growth rates for American whiskey and tequila. Therefore we will be continuing to put an emphasis on developing sales for Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve, El Jimador and Herradura tequila in the region.

JOHN KILMARTINGlobal Director, Travel Retail, Patrón Spirits International

What are you most looking forward to at the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas? The IAADFS show is always an important opportunity to

meet with our current and potential new partners in this key region. Though Patrón has grown to become a well-known and respected brand, we continue to truly appreciate and value our customers.

The many partnerships that we have developed in the region will be further enhanced as we look forward to welcoming everyone to our stand during the course of the show.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to review 2014 and the many successes we enjoyed and to further solidify our plans for 2015.

What was your view of the show in 2014? Do you believe it was slower, the same or busier than in previous years? The show in 2014 seemed about the same as in previous years. There was a time early on when we fi rst entered the travel retail channel when high traffi c was crucial, as we were in our infancy in introducing Patrón tequila and liqueurs and our other brands to retailers and

seeking distribution. Today, we’re fortunate to have very

robust distribution for Patrón in the region, and so our focus now is to meet with our partners to grow our product off ering in their stores and developing activations.

We have a full calendar of meetings scheduled to do just that.

Can you predict what the mood might be like at this year's show? We’re cautiously optimistic. There is a lot happening in the world – as we all know – that aff ects us all.

But the economy is slowly rebounding, and travel is certainly picking back up, so there are some very good signs on the horizon. All of that will certainly be refl ected in the mood at the show.

According to the TRBusiness Annual Survey (which appears in the January issue of TRBusiness magazine) the industry believes that the US will be mostly protected from major geo-political crises and potentially thrive in 2015. Do you agree with what the industry has to say? Yes. I do think the US will ride out 2015 in good health, relative to some other regions in the world.

JOE LYONSDFS North America Vice-President Business Development

What are you most looking forward to at the IAADFS Show of the Americas? As usual, I look forward to the opportunity to

meet members of the industry which includes: vendors, operators from the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, members of the trade press, airport management and visiting offi cials – all of whom come together in one place for the week.

The meetings through informal and formal exchanges with vendors, for example, provide a venue to view new product off erings, review sales results and marketing strategies in terms of what works and any future opportunities.

Discussions of the industry’s regulatory area are particularly important. They currently include expansion and reduction of duty free allowances, sale and display of tobacco and progress on the eff ective use of STEB bags carried through security by connecting passengers.

What was your view of the show in 2014? Do you believe it was slower, the same or busier than in previous years? I don’t have the registration count or the exhibit count for 2014, but attendance at the show appeared busier than the previous year. Display areas, booths and the exhibits were busy throughout the week and there was a lot of energy throughout.

Why do you think this might be? I think the show refl ected the continued growth of both duty free and travel retail.Airports have added infrastructure. Duty free/travel retail store facilities are, for the most part, larger with broader merchandise assortments displayed in showcases and fi xtures similar to those passengers would see at shopping malls, or on the high street.

Can you predict what the mood might be like at this year's show? I think the mood will be similar to last year, although uncertainty in the currency markets will cause some concern in projecting future sales and inventories.

AMY WILSONWorld Travel Retail Manager Category Strategy at The Hershey Company and NANCY GIAMBANCO Americas Business Manager

What are you most looking forward to at the IAADFS Show of the Americas?

AW: The show is an exciting time for

Hershey to connect with customers and share our innovation, insights, strategic plans, and programming.

Hershey’s innovation will focus on snacking and informal gifting usage occasions this year to improve conversion within the confectionery category.

Only 8% of confectionery buyers purchase from close to the till point area and half of confectionery buyers could be tempted to switch brands at the point of purchase. [According to the 2014 CIR Global Study].

What was your view of the show in 2014? Do you believe it was slower, the same, or busier than in previous years? Why do you think this might be?

NG: The Americas show was favourable in 2014. The momentum of customer meetings and interaction was busier than it had been in past years.

Hershey’s World Travel Retail Team’s objective is to be the leading global confectionery knowledge source that our partners trust to turn insights into category activation.

We appreciate and value our partners for their support and trust in us to advise on how to grow the full confectionery category within duty free.

Can you predict what the mood might be like at this year's show? AW: While we can never predict the future, the Americas show is a good blend of regions and always full of energy. «
