“Bio-inspired systems”

Bionic Systems(popular definition)

 super-powers

generally associated to

Let us remind the definition of “Bionic Systems” we already know:

Bio-inspired systems______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

bionic a. [f. bio- + electronic.]having electro-mechanical body parts, or superhuman powers resulting from these.

Also in trivial use: powerful, energetic.

Bionics?

Bionic Systems

popular definition

bionics n.

the study and the construction of systems that function like (parts of) living beings.

Bionic Systems

scientific version:

bionic = βίον + ic.

bionic: s. f. Biol.

The study of functions, characteristics and phenomena observed in the living beings, in order to apply such knowledge in the

conception of new techniques and in the creation of new devices

and machines.

The term bionics was coined by Jack E. Steele in 1958 while working at the Aeronautics Division House at Wright-Patterson Air

Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, USA.

Bionic Systems biomimetic systems (Biomimetics)

or

 bioinspired systems

When science is inspired by nature

1) imitating their models, or

2) valorizing their knowledge, or

3) changing the paradigm of just extracting

a) by learning from nature, or

b) by doing the things in the way that nature does.

Bio-inspired systems______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The benefits from the bio-inspired systems can be seen in several applications, including aerodynamics of vehicles, structures, multifunctional materials, drugs, robots, etc., etc.

Bio-inspired systems are becoming common in some scientific environments, and it is connected with the work of several scientists (engineers, chemists, physicians, biologists, etc.) that look for copying the biological processes and apply them in different areas of technology and science.

The fundamental idea is:

“If nature took millions of years to improve their own mechanisms, why not to copy them?”

When talking about adapting the form to the function, naturegives us several examples:

(velvet) (hook)

• invented by Georges de Mestral (Suisse) in 1941• patented in 1951

Georges de Mestral identified the principle used by this plant to spread its seeds (small hooks that grips to small

laces) and reproduced it in the velcro.

water flows accelerated through the shark skin reducing the friction

scales also inhibit the adherence of seaweed

It is formed by scales

that give them hydrodynamic

vantages such as to reduce the turbulence while they swim

Bio-inspired systems______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

• material that is rigid without being brittle

• reduces the amount of ‘drag’ as the shark swims

• decreases the ‘friction’ of the water flowing along the shark 's body

• gets rid of parasites

• minimizes the area to which ‘organisms’ can adhere

• sharks ‘swims’ efficiently
