Mastery Curriculum Masterclass
In line with the theme of Crawshaw's ‘mastery’ approach to learning, 10a1 and 10a2 came together on Monday 17th July to work on improving anonymised extracts from their recent English Literature trial exams.
Students worked in teams to take the paragraphs they were presented with to the next level by making sure their re-written responses covered all assessment objec-tives relevant to each question and developed interpre-tations and explanations of language, structure, form, effects and contexts fully and analytically.
On a hot day, it made a pleasant change from cramped classrooms, and the opportunity to discuss Freud and the relevance of R.M. Ballantyne’s ‘Coral Island’, as well as the chance to compare answers and approaches with others, will hopefully have given students one more step up the ladder towards the highest possible grade next year.
Our Year 9’s completed their Year 10 transition
day on Friday 14th July. We started the day with a
motivational assembly with Cameron Parker.
Then, splitting into 6 groups, the students
completed different tasks throughout the day to
help prepare them for Year 10 in September.
Students were asked to think about their futures
beyond Year 11 to help them think about what
targets they would need to set in order achieve
these goals. We ended the day with the ‘Well
Done’ assembly and a final presentation regarding
expectations moving to Upper School. All students
actively participated throughout the day showing
their maturity and readiness for the move up.

This year we have been thrilled to work with Greenside Primary school. This has involved Mr Brand travelling to the school every Thursday morning since November to deliver singing to all year groups. At Christmas Mr Brand worked with Year 5 and 6 accompanying their singing for the Christmas performance in Pudsey Parish Church. Our own choir worked alongside Greenside to sing Gary Barlow's 'Sing' amongst other pieces in a special singing day at Crawshaw.
As part of our recent CrawTour, Mr Brand rehearsed one of our own choir songs with Greenside and Mrs Davidson led both choirs in a joint performance of 'I Am A Small Part of The World'.
Finally last Thursday, Greenside held a spe-cial singing assembly. Parents of Years 3 & 4 were invited to listen to the work Mr Brand has done with their children this term.
Catherine Morgan, Headteacher of Greenside says;
...The transformation in their attitude has been amazing. My teachers not only comment on how much the children enjoy singing now, but also on how much the quality of their singing has improved...
We have really enjoyed working in partnership with Greenside and we look forward to another twelve months of opportunities.

Myths became legends for MDC’s second annual showcase on the 19th and 20th of July, 2017. Highlights included: a tribute to the fallen soldiers of The First World War, a nightmarish journey through a mental institution and a crowd-pleasing encore featuring poms. Audience members leapt at the opportunity to join in the fun, dancing to a routine taught to primary school children and family members. The evening concluded with a tearful farewell to Captain Meg Flaherty and a warm welcome for new captain, Lois Fiddes and Vice Captain, Charlie
Clarke.

2017
This year’s Year 11 Prom has been and gone, but oh what a night it was. Prepared for rain
and thunder storms, we were lucky enough to celebrate in the glorious sunshine at
The Village Hotel in Headingley once more. Staff waited patiently on the stairs leading up to
the venue for the students to arrive and we were not disappointed. Our students had clearly
put in a lot of thought as to how they could make their entrance special and memorable.
Limousines and motor bikes were amongst the rich and varied modes of transport. As each
car door opened, out came another student dressed to impress in glamorous suits, dresses
and gorgeous gowns.
We saw the return of the photo booth and sweet cart this year, both being very well-
received by staff and students once more. The photo booth opened up the opportunity to
add some fun. With the addition of the props, we had many photos where students
became princesses, kings, pirates and even a viking.
With photo’s done and food eaten, the Year 11’s were on their feet and dancing the night
away. Joshua Waite had us entertained with his back flips and the boys showed us they
really could dance when ‘Time of our life’ was playing. The girls’ shoes did not last long, but
that did not stop them from busting the moves on that dance floor.
But before we got down to the serious dancing, there was
the all-important announcement of the Prom King and
Queen. This was not an easy decision for staff to make as
all students looked amazing, however, I had the great
pleasure of announcing Hope Chiguvo and Stacey Sibanda
as our Prom King and Queen of 2017. Then it was straight
back to it! Dancing the night away. It was great to see
everyone celebrating together. The evening ended with an
emotional goodbye as we gradually saw our tired
but happy Year 11’s off one by one. Having now said our final goodbye’s, I would like to
take this opportunity to say that managing this group of Year 11’s has once again been an
absolute pleasure. From everyone at Crawshaw, we wish all our Year 11’s the very best of
luck in their future endeavours. Mrs Dyson
