What is LINK?LINK stands for Local Integrated Network of Kerala IEEE Student Branches
To network student branches across Kerala – to add more value to IEEE Student Membership
How LINK evolvedStarted with LINK reps from each SB with just 9
branches (2004)Trained a set of volunteers to take awareness sessionsArranged face to face meetings, training for volunteersAKSC participation increased, more branches were
formedLINK EC was formed with LINK President (SAC), VP,
Secretary, Treasurer, and webmaster all studentsSecretary of LINK became SR for Section EC
LINK EvolutionLINK EC was elected from LINK repsOn line meetings introducedEmail groups, SMS groups formed5 hubs and one Hub driver per hub were identified in
20072008 increased the hub team to 3 – one hub driver and 2
assts later added one counsellor as hub leader2009 one WiE member was added in every hub and WIE
rep in LINK ECBranch Counsellors meet elected hub leaders and LINK
VP
LINK EvolutionToday LINK conducts 5 major events every year –
F2F, BCC, AKSC, LINK CAMP, and WIE Forum with participation from more than 25 out of 43 branches
Started organising LINK on line contestsstudent awards, and Counsellor awards being
managed by LINKIn the 5 year period of LINK 2 students won Larry K
Wilson Award (Prijoe, and Nithin Sha), one outstanding Counsellor Award (Nisha Kuruvilla) and also MGA innovation award (2008) was shared by Gopakumar, Prijoe and Mini Thomas
LINK EvolutionCEC bagged Centre of Execellence award and
Kerala Section won the best large section Award of R10 in 2005, Rajagiri won the consolation prize in R10 website contest
LINK today has 43 branches and more than 2600 Student members – exponential rise from 11 branches and 600 students in 2003
Major Achievements of LINKExponential growth of

Region 10 still has 25% Inactive Branches
Successful establishment of
IEEE LINK in Kerala
IEEE Student Activities - Structure
DisadvantagesTop Down Approach- Old Fashioned Network ModelNetwork among peers – local and global- very little scope - extensively time consuming process Benefits for a member is confined to the entity (SB) to which he or she belongs Lacks lateral knowledge sharing processIncrease in inactive student branches Difficult to tap new potential educational institutions, as no system exists
R10 Global Integrated Network of IEEE
R10 GINI – Global Integrated Network of IEEE students
Five Year initiative to integrate all the SBs in Region 10
Based on the successful prototype of IEEE Kerala Section –LINK R10
The Initiative was formally launched at Region 10 Student Congress held at Chennai, India in January 2008
Reasons for R10 GINIStay connected: Networking the students, around Region 10Improve the SB coordination at Regional level– Creation of new SBs – Sustain existing SBs, we still have 25% inactive
SBs Add Benefit to IEEE Student Membership within Region 10Large potential for growth in Student Activities in Region 10Low conversion rate of student members to GOLD membersSuccessful Implementation of Link in Kerala
R10-GINI : VisionGINI shall act as a catalyst in networking and sustaining the student branches of Asia- Pacific, and in increasing and adding value to IEEE student membership.
R10-GINI : MissionAct as a conjunctive body to encompass the Student Branches coming under its geographical span
Increase networking and add value to IEEE student membership
Reactivate sick student branches/add new student branches
Proposed Structure – New Prototype
Advantages of the new prototype
Exponential Growth of the Network– Setting up a similar network is easy– The exponential growth in student membership,
branches and student activitiesLateral knowledge sharing is made a realityAdd benefits to the membership– The reach of membership benefits not limited to an SB
Cordial relationships among Student Branches– Mutual help in sustaining as active Student Branches
Increase the student involvement in IEEEConverting higher percentage of student members to GOLD
Region 10 GINI - proposed
Pilot SectionsInclude more pilot sections graduallyBuild a full fledged network within a span of 5 years
R10-GINI : Areas of Concern
Stabilizing IEEE Offices and the Volunteers– Ensure the connectivity of Student Branch officials– Try to bridge the gap with the proper transition of leadership
Retention of members Special effort to address the concerns of new members Resolve issues of members (spectrum delivery, branch related issues)
Membership Drives Membership Drives in Inactive Branches
IEEE Awareness Visit potential Institutions for new Student Branches
Branch Counselor – Motivate the Branch Counselor, Institution Management Issues
Many more…………

R10 GINI : OrganizationR10-GINI has a three tier structure
– Level 1: R10 GINI Execom R10 SAC, RSR, Mentor Section SAC, one Pilot Section SAC,
Four Student Volunteers (from GINI section student representatives), R10 GINI Coordinator
– Level 2: Section GINI Execom Section SAC, GINI Section Student Representative, Hub
Leaders
– Level 3: Hub Level Team Hub Leader (SB), Hub Leader Branch Counselor, Branch
representatives
R10 GINI : ConnectivityR10-GINI has established a website
– www.gini.r10sac.orgGINI online meetings conducted regularly
GINI will organize face to face meeting for the R10 GINI Excom once in a year.
R10 GINI- Major Achievements

R10-GINI : Pilot Section Activities 08GINI Activities in Hyderabad, India 55/64 SBs– Visited & Reactivated 12 inactive SBs – Created 9 New SBs in IEEE Hyderabad Section– Organized Student Office Bearers Congress in April
2008– Created 4 Hubs and started coordinating– Organized 3 zonal congresses at Hub level– Draft Section GINI constitution formulated
Membership 1493/2449 (2742) Jan 09
R10-GINI : Pilot Section Activities
GINI Activities in Pakistan SBs 28/31– Reactivated 6 SBs, formed 3 new, 5 in pipe line– GINI Awareness Sessions at SBs– Discussions with sick branches to identify the problems
faced– Formation of GINI-Pakistan-Execom– IEEE awareness and campaign at potential educational
institutions– Held Section Student Congress (Karachi) in July 2008,
Pakistan Student Congress, August 2008– Conducted more IEEE, GINI awareness sessions
R10-GINI : Pilot Section Activities
GINI Activities in New Zealand 1/2Leadership workshop, jointly conducted University of Auckland and nearby AUT IEEE SB in May 2008
– Attendance of 25 from each university– AUT was able to obtain enough signatures to officially apply
to open a SB, a feat almost 5 years in the making

How to Start GINI in your sectionStep 1
Select one student GINI representative from each SBStep 2
Have a meeting of all GINI reps and SB counsellorsSelect section GINI committee office bearers
SAC to be the president of GINI committee One counsellor may be selected as VP Student reps to be secretary, treasurer, web master, etc
Step 3 If no. of SBs are more than 10 or 20 and
geographically distributed Hubs can be formed consisting of 5 to 10 SBs per hub
Hub teams may consist of Hub leader (counsellor) and hub drivers to support (1 to 3)
Step 4GINI committee may also include hub leaders/ hub
driversDiscuss issues facing the SBsIdentify active/ vibrant SBs as mentor SBs and
allocate one inactive SB to be mentored by active SB
Step 5Conduct periodic on line meeting – at least once per
month with GINI repsPeriodicity of GINI EC can be more frequent
Step 6Have face to face meeting once in 3 or 6 monthsHave GINI organise section student congress/ hub
level congressShare ideas, benefit from learning from each other
and collective thinking to resolve issues
Step 7Keep track of reporting deadlines and ensure
reporting by all SBsOrganize programs jointly within hub or invite other
SBs in the same hub to participate
Step 8Train a set of volunteers to give awareness sessions
in new or inactive branchesTrain new office bearers on how to run SBs etc
