(ARA) — We allknow the feeling thatcomes with the firstgreat day of spring.When the sun isshining, the airsmells sweet andfresh and the tem-peratures are warm,we all feel the urgeto get outside andthrow off the con-finement of the win-ter months. Whetheryou're an avid ath-lete, a dedicated gar-dener or someonewho's been meaning to getstarted on an exercise pro-gram, the arrival of spring isone sure way to get you mov-ing.
No one is immune from thedesire to get outdoors and dosomething active while enjoy-ing the weather - and thatincludes people with chronicpain issues. Whether you'redealing with arthritis or try-ing to treat carpal tunnel syn-drome, the threat of pain isone of the most challengingobstacles to overcome forthose who want to live anactive lifestyle, because noone wants to take the risk ofaggravating their health prob-lems.
But even if you're livingwith pain, it's essential toheed the call of the outdoorsthis spring and be active.There are plenty of ways tomitigate pain issues andavoid further injury. Theimportant thing is to consultyour doctor and to work out aplan together that will let youget the exercise you want andneed without worsening your
pain. And, in fact, exercisingcan be an important part ofovercoming some of thoseissues - as long as it's done inthe right way.
There are a lot of activitiesthat we all love to do thatrequire a lot of repetitivemotion. Tennis is a popularsport for all ages, and a gamethat can be played over a life-time, but for people sufferingfrom joint pain and carpaltunnel syndrome (CTS), therepeated swinging motionsrequired for a good volley candrive them off the court.
Similarly, gardeners eagerto get their hands in the dirtcan be limited by pain thatcrops up with the repetitiousmotion involved in tilling,preparing beds, digging andplanting. For people sufferingfrom CTS, whether they aregardeners, tennis players orotherwise, supportive glovescan provide the relief theyneed. One example, IMAK'sSmartGlove, features a com-fortably flexible supportsplint that keeps hands in agood position without beingstiff, and helps to relieve or

prevent carpal tunnel syn-drome. It's ideal for activelifestyles because it is breath-able and washable, and it's aneffective non-surgical treat-ment of carpal tunnel syn-drome.
According to the MayoClinic, exercise is an impor-tant part of dealing with backpain. Not only does itstrengthen the muscles andjoints, but it can stretch con-tracted muscles, improve pos-ture and even help protectagainst injury by improvingyour overall fitness.
Another health problemthat exercise can positivelyaffect is arthritis. When yougo outside and start beingactive this spring, you can
help your arthritis with activ-ities like tai chi, strengthen-ing exercises and cardio exer-cise that get your heart work-ing. It's recommended thatyou protect your joints bywarming them up prior toexercise, and by being gentleon your body - starting out toohard and fast can cause prob-lems. Support products likeIMAK's SmartGlove can alsohelp you stay in good align-ment as you work out.
Don't resist the urge tosoak in the sunshine becauseof pain and discomfort thisspring. Not only is gettingoutside easier than ever withsupportive therapies, but it'san essential part of living ahealthier, pain-free life.
While genetics and externalfactors beyond a man's con-trol play a role in overall fit-ness, the top threats tomen's health are largely pre-ventable. Leading the list areheart disease, cancer andunintentional injury. Whileprotection against uninten-tional injury can be difficultbeyond taking standardsafety precautions, the fightagainst heart disease andcancer is one men can fightfar in advance of diagnosis.For example, maintaining ahealthy diet and exerciseroutine can help keep menhealthy. In addition, reducingstress or learning ways inwhich to cope successfullywith stress can make a bigdifference. Routine healthvisits also can identify poten-tial health threat s early on.

(ARA) - When you cleanyour house in the spring, youreally want it to be clean. Dirt,dust and germs are banned,and all appliances, floors andwalls are scrubbed clean. Butis your house really clean, orhave you traded dirt andgerms for caustic and toxicchemicals found in most con-ventional cleaning products?
Even some so-called naturalcleansers can contain thesesame or similar nasty ingredi-ents. And you would know thisonly if the manufacturer prac-tices full disclosure of ingredi-ents on their labels, which isnot required on home careproducts. Think about it -when was the last time yousaw a full ingredient listing onyour spray cleaner?
The best way to make sureyour living space is clean andhealthy is to use safe, naturalcleaning products you createyourself, using natural andinexpensive ingredients youcan pick up at any natural gro-cery store. It's cost-effective,not difficult and, like the taskof spring cleaning itself, it'ssatisfying and rewarding. Youcan craft your own, home-spunversions of everything fromcarpet cleaner to furnituredusting polish - and have thesatisfying assurance that youreally are keeping your homeclean and green.
Whether you're shoppingfor prepared natural cleaningsolutions or making your own,keep in mind that the word"aromatherapy" is now beingapplied to everything scented- from dishwashing liquid tolaundry detergent. The truepractice of aromatherapyrelies on using pure essentialoils extracted from plants.
These natural plant essencesnurture us on mental, emo-tional, physical and even spir-itual levels. House cleaningisn't exactly a spiritual exer-cise, but adding the effectsand properties of essentialoils to your homemade house-hold products can enhance theexperience and the effective-ness of your task.
Essential oils have potentantimicrobial effects alongwith their clean, pleasant nat-ural aromas. Here are a few"classic" homecare essentialoils suggested by the expertsat the leading aromatherapycompany, Aura Cacia: lemon(clean, sweet, uplifting scent;deodorizing), peppermint(minty, fresh; air purifier;mild pest repellent), eucalyp-tus and tea tree (air and sur-face sanitizers; fresh, thera-peutic aromas).
Here's a shopping list of keyingredients for making yourown homecare products:
* Baking soda (SodiumBicarbonate) - Gently abrasivescouring powder, odorabsorber and an excellentbase for making your owncleaning preparations.
* Washing soda (SodiumCarbonate)
* Borax (Sodium Borate) -Natural mineral compound,laundry booster, multipurposecleanser, fungicide/insecti-cide.
* White distilled vinegar(Acetic Acid)
* Liquid soap (SodiumHydroxide) - Choose from veg-etable oil-based soaps such asolive oil or sweet almond.

(ARA) - Do you sneeze andwheeze all spring long? If so,you may be making commonmistakes that keep you frompreventing spring allergies.The American College ofAllergy, Asthma andImmunology (ACAAI) alertsallergy sufferers to avoidthese five common mistakes:
1. Treating symptoms with-out knowing what you'reallergic to.
You may think you knowwhat's causing your springallergy symptoms, but morethan two-thirds of springallergy sufferers actuallyhave year-round allergies. Anallergist, a doctor who is an

expert in treating allergiesand asthma, can performtests to pinpoint the cause ofyour suffering and then findthe right treatment to stop it.
2. Spending blindly onover-the-counter medications.
There are tons of allergymedications available at thestore, some of which can bevery effective. But if you'rebuying new products all thetime, spending a bundle andnot feeling better, consultwith an allergist who can dis-cuss which options might bebest for you. Your allergistmay suggest nasal spray orallergy shots, also calledimmunotherapy.Immunotherapy can actuallycure your allergies and keepyou out of the drug storeaisles for good."Immunotherapy can possiblycure your allergies and keepyou out of the drug storeaisles for good," says allergistDr. James Sublett, chair ofthe ACAAI "Find an Allergist,Find Relief" public educationcampaign.
3. Waiting too long to takeallergy meds.
Don't wait until symptomskick in and you're alreadyfeeling bad to take allergymedication. Instead, prepareby taking medication that hasworked for you in the pastjust before the allergy seasonstarts. Pay attention to theweather: When winter weath-er turns warm, pollens andmolds are released into theair. Start treatment prior tothe warm up.
4. Not steering clear ofyour allergy triggers.
Finding the right treatmentis important, but it's also crit-
ical to start avoiding whatyou are allergic to. For exam-ple, if you have a pollen aller-gy, make sure you keep yourwindows shut, take a showerwhen you come inside andstay indoors during mid-daywhen pollen counts are high-est. All of these things canmake a big difference in howyou feel. "Taking theseactions can make a big differ-ence in how you feel," saysSublett.
5. Eating produce and otherfoods that might aggravatesniffles and sneezing.
If your mouth, lips andthroat get itchy and you snif-fle and sneeze after eatingcertain raw or fresh fruits orother foods, you may have"oral allergy syndrome." Thecondition, which affectsabout one third of seasonalallergy sufferers, occurs inpeople who are already aller-gic to pollen. Their immunesystem sees a similaritybetween the proteins ofpollen and those of the food,and triggers a reaction. If youare allergic to tree pollen, forexample, foods like apples,cherries, pears, apricots,kiwis, oranges, plums,almonds, hazelnuts and wal-nuts may bother you. Cookingor peeling the food may help,but you should talk to anallergist.

(ARA) - As soon as the tem-peratures warm up, you openup the doors and windows andlet the "fresh" air in. You wantto get rid of winter's stale,indoor air and replace it withthe clean, outdoor air.
You also go on a cleaningspree, vacuuming, dusting andgetting rid of all the dust bun-nies hiding under furniture.With a fresh, clean house, youassume you'll be breathingmuch easier.
Think again. Air pollution isa very serious concernindoors. The U.S.Environmental ProtectionAgency lists poor indoor airquality as one of the top fiveenvironmental threats. It alsoreports indoor air is three tofive times more contaminatedthan outdoor air, on average.
"When the house is closedup for winter, pollutants in theair have nowhere to go," saysAaron Marshbanks, boardmember of the National AirDuct Cleaners Association."Then spring rolls around, andthe natural thing to do is openup your windows and bringnew air into your house.However, this is when allergyseason is at its highest, andyou're welcoming new pollu-tants into your home and con-taminating your air with pol-lens."
These pollutants are thenblown through your house fiveto seven times each day byyour heating, ventilation andair conditioning system. Andthe spring cleaning you'redoing? All those dust bunniesare just groupings of millionsof little particles of dust, dan-der and pollen. When brokenup, many of the particles goback into the air, circulatearound through your houseand once again collect under
your sofa.Some tips to keep the air
you breathe inside as clean aspossible include:
* Install hardwood floorsversus carpeting. Carpetingtraps particles, and with everystep you take across it, thoseparticles are released backinto the air.
* Have carpets professional-ly cleaned with a truck-mount-ed system.
* Use natural- or botanical-based cleaners instead ofchemicals.
* Regularly change your fur-nace filter - most experts rec-ommend doing this every twomonths. This will help removeparticles circulating throughthe air.
* Have your heating andcooling system thoroughlycleaned. This is because dustand other air pollutants collectin the vents, and then arepicked up by the air streamand blown back into the house.
NADCA recommends home-owners take off the cover of anair vent and look down thevent with a mirror and flash-light or a digital camera. If theducts are covered with dust ordebris, it's time for a heatingand cooling system cleaning.
NADCA recommends a thor-ough duct cleaning, as well ascleaning the evaporator coiland all parts of the system thatair touches. Not only will thisclean up the air inside yourhouse, but it will also helpyour system work more effi-ciently and save you money. Astudy taken by Pacific Gas andElectric showed that a dirtycondenser coil can result in 30percent higher energy usage.To find a qualified heating andcooling system cleaner in yourarea, visit NADCA.com.
Make sure your Indoorair is healthy this spring
