Aim of work and methods Taiwan hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana) is

an endemic species in Taiwan and its timbers are well

recognized for their natural decay resistance.

Isolation and identification of antifungal constituents from

the heartwood extracts of Taiwan hinoki were carried out

in this study.

Heartwood extract exhibited an excellent antifungal activity against brown-rot fungus L. sulphureus and white-rot fungus L. betulina.

According to MS, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR analyses, 16 compounds were identified, namely α-cadinol, -cadinol, T-muurolol, -costol, hinokiol, hinokione, sandaracopimaric acid… etc.

α-Cadinol and T-muurolol efficiently inhibited the growth of wood-rot fungi.
