Jesus said to his disciples: “No one can serve
two masters. He will either hate one and love
the other, or be devoted to one and despise the
other. You cannot serve both God and
mammon.”
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your
life, what you will eat or drink, or about your
body, what you will wear…”
(Matthew 6:24-25)

FEBRUARY 26, 2017 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A VIEW FROM THE PEW
Ash Wednesday
March 01, 2017
A reflection on the sacramental of ashes that we receive on Ash
Wednesday: “Even the darkest moments of the liturgy are
filled with joy. And Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lent
fast, is a day of happiness, a Christian feast. It cannot be
otherwise, as it forms part of the great Easter cycle.”
(Thomas Merton)
The season of holy Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, a solemn day of fast and abstinence. The day
receives its special name from the blessing and imposition of ashes in the form of a cross on our
foreheads. “Remember, man, that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Cf. Gen. 3:19)
Ashes, made by burning palms blessed the previous Palm Sunday, symbolize the transience of our
earthly status. The body must fall temporarily into dust. This fact should serve as a challenge to
spiritual accomplishments. Through grace we were “buried” in Christ that we may rise with Him
and “live unto God.” We explain ashes with the “seed” idea. “They are not a sign of death,”
Fr. Merton says, “ but a promise of life.”
On the Way to Calvary
The Way of the Cross (more commonly known as
Stations of the Cross), is a way of prayer when we
walk, in spirit, with Jesus on His journey to Calvary.
It is a meditation on His suffering and death. Each
meditation can be a personal meeting with Jesus and
a new discovery of His presence in our lives. Each
meditation can be deeply personal by recalling
specific persons, places and experiences in our own
lives.
“The Son of Man is destined to suffer grievously, to
be rejected, and to be raised up on the third day. If
anyone wants to be a follower of Mine, let him
renounce himself and take up his cross every day and
follow Me…(Luke 9: 22-23).”
We invite you to join us for our Lenten Stations of the
Cross on the following Fridays at 6:15 pm: March
3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st and April 7th.

Lenten Recollection
Tuesday, March 21, 2017
As part of our Lenten journey, please join us for
an evening of Recollection on Tuesday, March
21st, 6:30 pm, in the Church. Bring your family
and friends.
Our keynote Speaker will be Sacred Hearts
Father Herman Gomes,
SSCC, currently Pastor of St.
Ann Church in Kaneohe.
Have you ever thought of
Lent as a yearly second
chance? Each year the
Church gives us six weeks to
take a long, loving look at our lives to see if our
values and priorities are in line with God’s
desires for us. Since most of us find that we’ve
wandered from God’s path, Lent becomes that
second chance, or do-over, to “return to God
with our whole heart.”
Together, let’s journey through this annual
second chance by attending this evening of
Recollection, bringing us closer to the
welcoming arms of our ever loving God.

Lenten Regulations On
Fast and Abstinence
Ash Wednesday, March 1, marks the beginning of
Lent. The following fasting and abstinence
regulations are observed:
Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash
Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of
Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older.
Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age
but not yet 59. Those bound by the rule may take
only one full meal. Two smaller meals are
permitted as necessary to maintain strength, but
eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
From its earliest days, the Church has urged the
baptized and the catechumens to observe the
threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving, and
prayer as a preparation for the celebration of
Easter. Failure to observe individual days of
penance is not considered serious, but failure to
observe any penitential days at all or a substantial
number of such days must be considered serious.

Friendship Month at Mary, Star of the Sea School
Every month, students at Mary, Star of the Sea School celebrate a new character trait. February’s
theme is FRIENDSHIP. 3rd graders introduced the theme during a Flag Raising ceremony where
they “cooked up” a treat using a recipe for friendship – 1 gallon of kindness, ½ cup of trustworthi-
ness, 2 tablespoons of love, and so much more. Students, families, and teachers are all celebrating
their friendships and remembering what it truly takes to be a good friend. Below are some of the
moments captured during this month.

Snow Day the ELC Way!
Approximately 200 ELC children from ages 2-6 years of age enjoyed a morning in the snow, donning
their snow day attire in warm clothes, mittens, boots and more! Nearly 10 tons of snow was delivered
by Amazon trucking to the large field area of the upper Mary, Star of the Sea campus. The ELC
children enjoyed warm chocolate drinks, special treats and frozen art activities. In the afternoon, the
children had a surprise visit by the “Disney Characters, Queen Elsa and Olaf,” from Storybook
Entertainment. Mahalo to the ELC PTG Board for sponsoring this annual event!

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: Isaiah 49:14-15 -- The second suffering servant
song of Isaiah (Isaiah 49:1-7) almost immediately precedes our 1st read-
ing today. Commentators see the suffering servant as representing not
only an individual, but a people as well; the people of Israel (the 12
tribes, not the northern kingdom).
SECOND READING: 1Corinthians 4:1-5 -- As we finish our jour-
ney through 1st Corinthians for this cycle of readings, we are once again
reminded by Saint Paul that divisions in the Church cannot be tolerated;
we are all members of the one body. Because we all belong to the one
body, we can't judge other parts because in doing so we are judging our-
selves. There is only one judge, Christ, and we must all answer to Him.
GOSPEL: Matthew 6:24-34 -- The lesson is that God must have first
place in our lives. But we still must earn our living and work our passage
through life. What Christ is warning us against is that we must not get so
attached to, and so enslaved by, the things of this world, that we neglect
God and our own eternal happiness.
