What is a Mav Also known as UAVs, Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are unmanned air vehicles

capable of being flown remotely from either short or long range distances. The purpose of flight can range from recreational use to military use in missions such intelligence gathering or scouting for hazardous obstacles.

Then and now in flight history

What this says about usThe future is bright, and very promising. This is just the beginning in our engineering endeavors, and as we continue to strive for success we too may someday leave our mark in history as the Wright Brothers did many years ago

Mavs and you• The innovative nature of MAVs for their size and ever increasing capabilities

allows us to reflect on the fact that the engineering field is always changing and moving forward in technological advances that shape the world we live in today.

• This fact alone puts us (students) into the mindset that we must continue to learn throughout our academic career and beyond; thus preparing us for the time in which we too will continue to innovate and become pioneers in future engineering projects and ideas in the years to come.

Project objectives

• To design and fly a MAV under certain requirements and restrictions.

• To understand the requirements in format that engineers face when creating a project.

• To learn how to work in a group.

Keys to sucess• Teamwork!

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”

-Henry Ford Knowledge and understanding of

engineering principals and design, as well as all material covered in class

Requirements/constraints

• Structure and Payload Max weight: 450g

A camera mount created (to fit a 20g micro DVR)

• Mode of Flight, Power and Propulsion Any type of propulsion system

Ground takeoff

No internal combustion engines

Must have the ability to fly at least 5 minutes without charging the energy source

Control Requirements A 2.4 G Hz radio transmitter must be used

Flight Plan1. Fly as many figure eight paths around two pylons separated by 50 ft

2. Survey a 100’×50’ area, while collecting a clear image of the 1’ square targets

Basic Platform GWS Slow Stick

“Slow Stick” refers to the shape of the fuselage

Some materials include: foam and plastic

No working ailerons
