• California enters the Union as a free state.

• No more slave auctions in Washington D.C.

• Texas receives 10 million in compensation.

• Popular Sovereignty in New Mexico and Utah.

• A new fugitive slave law.

Stephen Douglas wanted to be president. !So he proposed the Kansas and Nebraska Act

Essentially allowing slavery to spread anywhere in the country.

• Popular Sovereignty in Kansas and Nebraska Territories.

• “Bleeding Kansas”

Kansas Nebraska Act

Pro slavery and Anti slavery.

But not everybody wanted slavery to spread.

The Kansas and Nebraska Act got Abraham Lincoln back into politics.

He never liked slavery, but felt it was constitutionally protected where it already existed. !!He didn’t want it to spread.
