Put the Glass Down Today
Dear Friends, We’re into Lent and it’s a time where lots of us will end up facing some degree of temptation to beat up on ourselves for failing in our efforts to fulfil our Lenten penances. I wish to share a story with you. A professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see and asked the students, “How much do you think is the weight of this glass?” “50 gms!” …. “100 gms!” …. “125gms!” …. The students answered. “I really don’t know unless I weigh it,” said the professor, “but, my question is: What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?” “Nothing”, the students said. “Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?” the professor asked. “Your arm would begin to ache”, said one of the students. “You’re right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?” “Your arm could go numb, you might have severe muscle stress and paralysis and have to go to hospital for sure!” ventured another student and all the students laughed. “Very good, but during all this, did the weight of the glass change?” asked the professor. “No” “Then what caused the arm ache and the muscle stress?” The students were puzzled. “Put the glass down!” said one of the students. “Exactly!” said the professor. “Life’s problems are something like this. Hold it for a few minutes in your head and they seem okay. Think of them for a long time and they begin to ache. Hold it even longer and they begin to paralyse you. You will not be able to do anything.” - (Source: author Kathy Hadley) Sometimes we are like this. We carry the burden of our problems and failures. We find it really hard to let go. As a result, we are paralysed and not able to enjoy the life God has given us. The problem is that by our strength we are not able to let go. This Lent, if you would like to experience more peace in your heart, I would encourage you to let go…stop beating yourself up, forgive yourself and others, ask forgiveness from God and others. All of us face problems and failures and the comforting thought is that Jesus has taken away our failures and sins. (Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened and I will give you rest. Mt. 11/28). Let us trust God completely and during this Lent, learn to put the glass down through the power of the Holy Spirit. Wishing you a good time of staying close to God through this Lent, Love and prayers, Fr. Shibu Jacob Msfs
