BernerRathaus
The City of Bern ordered the construction of its new Rathaus in 1406. In charge of the project was master builder Heinrich von Gengenbach, who came from southern Germany. It took ten years for the up-and-coming city state to complete this monu-mental edifice, a clear symbol of its ambition. Throughout its 600-year history, the Rathaus has always been Bern’s political centre. Due to the growing and changing space require-ments of the Bern government and adminis-tration, the structure of the building has been altered on numerous occasions.
History
The substantial renovations carried out between 1940 and 1942 aimed to return the Rathaus to its mediaeval appearance while adapting the interior to the requirements of a modern parliament. The magnificent portico of the entrance hall on the ground floor – one of the most impressive late mediaeval rooms in Switzerland – was restored to its former glory. The parliament chamber and the lobby ( Wandelhalle) were completely redesigned. Since then, the Rathaus has gradually been modernised and equipped to meet the latest technical requirements ( interpreter cabins, electronic voting system, presentation tech-nology).
1 The nine pillars in the Rathaus entrance hall and its imposing timber ceiling date from the late Middle Ages. The timber ceiling rests on the original mediaeval oak beams.
2 The mural “Aufbau” in the parliament chamber, painted by Karl Walser in 1942, shows the City of Bern being built. This is where the parliaments of the City and Canton of Bern hold their sessions.
3 The Cantonal Government holds its meetings under a 15th century timber ceiling taken from the former council chamber. The panelling and wooden carvings were completed in 1943.
4 The Rathaus is home to works by several renowned artists, including the “Schwinger- umzug” (Wrestler’s Parade) by Ferdinand Hodler from 1884.

The Rathaus (Town Hall ) is the political centre for the Canton and City of Bern. Five times a year the Cantonal Parliament holds its sessions in the parliament chamber (Grossratssaal ). The Rathaus is also where the parliamentary committees convene to discuss their business and the parliamen-tary groups and the office of the Cantonal Parliament hold their meetings. Every week, the Cantonal Government also meets in the Rathaus to debate and decide on matters from all areas of policy.
The Rathaus is also the venue for press con-ferences given by the Cantonal Government, the departments of the Cantonal Adminis-tration and the parliamentary committees. Various cantonal and intercantonal bodies make the most of its central location in Bern’s Old Town to hold their meetings and events. The Rathaus is also where the City of Bern’s parliament convenes.
