How to greet a teacher or another adult

Culturelle: Bonjour

• When young people meet their teachers, they always use, “Bonjour.” Young French people are generally more formal with adults than their friends.

• Young people in France address adults as “Monsieur, Madame or Mademoiselle.” The last name is not used in greeting adults.

• You say, “Bonjour Monsieur, etc.”

Tu et Vous

• In French greetings, a distinction is made between formal and informal terms of address.

• When you are speaking to an individual in French, you need to choose between the formal (vous) and informal (tu) forms of address.

Culturelle: Vous

• Young French people are generally more formal with adults than their friends.• Young people in France address

adults using “Vous .”

The informal tu is used as follows:

• Between students of the same age group and young people in general

• Between people who are on a first-name basis• Among family members• With children• With animals• In some French-speaking countries, especially in

Africa, the tu form, rather than vous, is used almost exclusively when speaking to a single individual.

The formal vous is used as follows:

• With and between people who are not on a first-name basis

• Among people who are meeting for the first time• With those who are older than you• When addressing more than one person• When speaking with someone whom you don’t

know very well, who is older than you, or who is in a higher position, vous is in order.

• In cases of doubt, always use vous.
