VİLLAGGİO MATTEOTTİ
Architects: Giancarlo De Carlo Country : Italy City : Terni Dwellings : 100 Completion year: 1974
Villaggio Matteotti was built as a social housing project at an industrial city. The residents, all employees at the steelwork factory, were invited to participate in the design process. De Carlo used an exhibition on social housing in the world to show the options and interviewed about 100 possible residents. They had to give their opinion on the general project not only on the individual dwellings. At the end 15 different dwellings were designed with each at least 3 alternative interior spaces. Each dwelling would have a outdoor space and an entrance from the street. Dwellings are connected by the pedestrian routes parallel with the dwellings and roads and by bridges over the roads.

BUILDING WITH LOW RISE AND HIGH DENSITY IS FOR CREATING A NEIGBOURHOOD. HE CREATED 5 DIFFERENT BLOCKS OF 3 DWELLING. A TOTAL OF 15 DIFFERENT BUILDINGS WITH EACH AT LEAST 3 ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS TO ORGANISE THE INTERIOR SPACE. EACH DWELLING HAS AN OUTDOOR SPACE, DIRECT ENTRANCE TO THE STREET AND PARKING SPACE.
DWELLERS ARE THE ONES WHO GIVE FUNCTION TO SPACES BY PARTICIPATING THE DESIGN PROCESS.

Another case that we will analyze: NAKED HOUSE
Architects: Shigeru Ban Country : Japan City : Kawagoe Completion year: 2000
Naked house, is a project that again in the same concept of participatory design but another housing typology; ‘detached house’. Villagio Matteotti was a social housing project. The architect Shigeru Ban, who is very famous architect around the world, especially with his exciting unseen works. This project, he called naked house, is one of them. Again by involving the user into the project process he ended up with such kind of amazing project. As the users wanted a space with least privacy and more togetherness feeling, the architect offered them a large open plan and transforming spaces. By cubic forms of movable rooms, users are able to shift them and arrange their rooms whenever they want.
Cubic movable spaces > variety
Least privacy as the users decide

Some floor plan examples derived by changing the room units...
The whole large space can also be used by taking out the room units. As the user wanted for his activities with his children.
Only the wet spaces are fitted because it is obligatory. The architect designed wet spaces as the farest boundry of the house, not to divide and limit the transforming space.
