Increasingly, end users want to remove the constraints of closed, proprietaryautomation systems, and in doing so, free their plant’s profit potential. They’reseeking a truly scalable control platform designed to integrate installed assets andco-exist with legacy systems – all while protecting valuable investments.

The Fieldbus Foundation answered this demand by developing a revolutionarytechnology that is “Changing the Playing Field” for industrial automation.

The FOUNDATION™ solution delivers open, scalable integration, process integrity, and business intelligence. It meets the market’s need for a tightly integratedautomation infrastructure enabling plants and factories to realize CapEx and OpExadvantages. In other words, it is a technology with a business purpose.

FOUNDATION fieldbus™ Changing the Playing Field

“End users should not forget thereal objective of implementingfieldbus: reliable operations andimproved profitability. At Shell, the technology improved assetutilisation, lowered fixed andvariable costs, and reducedmaintenance expenses.”James RhameAsset Development ManagerShell Chemical

“Our move towards adoptingFOUNDATION fieldbus was a naturalconsequence of improved processstability, better knowledge of assetstatus, and decreased downtimeprovided by this technology.Interoperability, and the means toimplement control at the fieldlevel, were also key factors duringour evaluation phase.”Carlos Henrique Wildhagen MouraTechnical ConsultantPetrobras

FOUNDATION Technology –More Than a Fieldbus ProtocolDigital device networks provide communication capabili-ties, but stop there. FOUNDATION technology is aboutmuch more than just communication. It is a forward-looking system infrastructure for the future of industrialautomation.

FOUNDATION technology provides end users with the“Freedom to Choose” best-in-class, interoperable controlproducts from their suppliers of choice, and the “Powerto Integrate” control systems, subsystems and devicesacross their enterprise. The result is improved plant andbusinessperformance.

An Industry Standard – Implemented WorldwideSince its introduction in 1994, the Fieldbus Foundation’sopen, non-proprietary technology has gainedunprecedented industry support. Tens of thousands offieldbus control systems, and over a million fieldbusdevices, are now in service around the world.FOUNDATION fieldbus is recognised as the de-factoindustry standard for process automation. It is fullycompliant with all recognised international fieldbus standards, including ISA S50, IEC 61158 and CENELECEN50170.

The Only Complete, Interoperable Fieldbus SolutionFOUNDATION fieldbus is a powerful, all-digital, two-waycommunications system interconnecting field equip-ment on a single process control network. Thetechnology offers a complete, open fieldbus solution:H1 fieldbus for continuous control; and COTS-basedHigh Speed Ethernet (HSE) for advanced processcontrol, hybrid or semi-continuous control, anddiscrete automation.

FOUNDATION fieldbus makes it possible to “mine”important information from the plant floor. When used correctly, this information empowers operatorsand makes plant operation easier.Only FOUNDATION fieldbus enables true distributedcontrol, as well as device and subsystem interoper-ability – without the need for custom programming.

Power to Integrate Your PlantEnterpriseFOUNDATION fieldbus provides end users with the powerto integrate their plant enterprise – and the freedomto choose how to integrate.

The H1/HSE fieldbus architecture not only integrateslegacy systems and other bus protocols, but alsounifies devices, hosts, control subsystems, dataservers and large data generators across the enterprise.

FOUNDATION fieldbus provides robust digital control basedon a tightly integrated system architecture and ahigh-speed backbone for plant operations. This, inturn, removes the constraints on interoperability forfield instruments, controllers and subsystems.

Fieldbus technology unifies today’s smart instrumenta-tion and analytical highway to provide all-digitalaccess to operational parameters and data at thepoint of measurement.

How End Users Are Benefiting from Fieldbus

Carbowil Spolka, PolandCarbowil Spolka has chosen Fieldbus Non-Incentive Concept (FNICO) power supplies andwiring components for a new fieldbus instrumen-tation project at the company’s carbon dioxideproduction plant in Wloclawek. Part of the plant isclassified as a Zone 2 hazardous area, and tomaintain a uniform approach across the entireinstallation, an explosion protection method suit-able for Zone 2 was required. The chosen solutionwith FOUNDATION fieldbus achieved all requirementsperfectly.

Tatneft-NK-Oil, RussiaThe plant in Nizhnekamsk is the first petrochem-ical plant in Russia that produces synthetic motoroil. It was constructed during 2002-2003 andstarted up in September 2003. The FOUNDATION

fieldbus technology provides an open, decen-tralised digital control architecture with intrinsicsafety that delivers rich diagnostic informationabout equipment health and status.

Shell, NigeriaFieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept (FISCO) powersupplies have been chosen for the Bonny IslandTerminal Project, a new development of 24 oilstorage tanks for Shell Petroleum DevelopmentCorporation in Nigeria. The control systemincludes a 6000 device FOUNDATION fieldbusnetwork. 1600 of the devices are located inhazardous areas.

Shin-Etsu, NetherlandsShin-Etsu is the largest PVC manufacturer in theworld. The Vinyl Chloride Monomer is piped fromthe manufacturing plant at Rotterdam to the plantat Pernis where PVC is produced. The initial instal-lation consists of 35 fieldbus segments in a Zone2 hazardous area, using “control in the field”.Thanks to the use of FOUNDATION fieldbus tech-nology it has been possible to eliminate wiring

and termination failures, which had been identi-fied as the main cause of maintenance problems.

Degussa, GermanyDegussa Herne upgraded the continuousproduction plant with FOUNDATION fieldbus. Theinvestment is comparable to conventionalsolutions but offers the operator a lot of additionalbenefits like reduced process downtime andextended asset management.

LUKOIL, RussiaLUKOIL modernised its refinery in 2002 byinstalling FOUNDATION fieldbus. The plant produces12 million tons petroleum per year. The refineryhas installed fieldbus at lube oil blending facility,at water treatment plant and at hydrogen rectifi-cation plant with over 3000 devices. The use offieldus enabled LUKOIL to lower its maintenancecosts and manage assets in response to marketdemand.

Fieldbus Foundation Compliance, Confidence and Credibility

The Fieldbus Foundation is a global organisationsupporting the adoption of new digital controltechnology for over a decade. The foundationhelped establish a single, interoperable fieldbusstandard, and our technology experts developedthe modern fieldbus architecture reshaping thefuture of industrial automation.

Freedom to Choose Best-in-ClassDevices

With FOUNDATION technology, end users have thefreedom to choose best-in-class control productsmeeting their specific application needs – and thepower to integrate those tools into their enterprisemodel.

The Fieldbus Foundation’s rigorous device testingand registration program allows you to choosefrom a growing selection of interoperable fieldbusproducts offered by the world’s leading automationequipment suppliers.

Instruments bearing the official foundation regis-tration seal will work on the same digital controlnetwork without loss of integration or functionality. This means you can select the best device for thejob, regardless of the manufacturer.

An Open, Platform-independentAutomation Environment

FOUNDATION Electronic Device Description Language(EDDL) is a text-based language for describing thedigital communication characteristics of intelligentdevices and equipment parameters in an OperatingSystem (OS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI)-neutral environment. EDDL enables a host systemmanufacturer to create a single engineering envi-ronment that eliminates the need for customsoftware drivers for each device type.

The Fieldbus Foundation recently signed anaddendum to its agreement with HART Commu-nication Foundation, PROFIBUS User Organisationand OPC Foundation to further develop EDDL. Thiscooperation project will protect industry invest-ments in EDDL by enabling additionalenhancements to the IEC 61804 standard.

With EDDL, device developers do not need to dealwith the burden of designing and programming agraphic user interface to run under a variety ofplatforms and environments, from large HMIs tosmall handhelds. Instead, they can utilise commongraphic display capabilities provided bycommands in the EDDL.

New Initiatives Look toThe Future

The Fieldbus Foundation's technology continues toadvance based on changing market requirements. For example, our Safety Instrumented Systems(SIS) program was launched to meet the growingworldwide demand for commercial, standards-based, safety instrumented system productsincorporating FOUNDATION technology.

We have also undertaken an initiative to standar-dise the interface of remote I/O into the FOUNDATION

architecture. The addition of remote I/O furthertightens the integration of process instrumentationwithin the FOUNDATION system solution.

“What FOUNDATION fieldbus has given usis a vendor-neutral DCS. Whencontrol resides in the field devices, the user is tied to his ‘system’ vendoronly by the extent to which theysupport the functions available.”John D. Rezabek Lead Control EngineerISP Lima BDO Manufacturing
