We bring you an all-new program designed to help startups and our health partners.Run in parallel, there is a full-year startup scale program to drive growth and moredeals for our selected startups. And an all-new health leadership program to helpour health partners collaborate successfully with startups. By supporting bothstartups and health partners, we aim to multiply our joined impact.

We pioneered in the health accelerator space. We started in 2015. Three years,30 startups and many lessons later we have co-created these two hands-onaccelerator programs together with our mentors, investors, and partners. Nowwe are working towards an exciting vision: “Scaling health impact, by building acommunity of over 100 health start-ups and scale-ups in Nijmegen through closecollaboration with our partners.”

Since 2015, we’ve continuously improved our value proposition,thanks to hard-won startup and health ecosystem lessons. Now it’stime for a game changer. With our 12 months startup scale programwe do justice to the fact that scaling up innovation in the healthsector is complex. We take the time to help startups build, validateand scale innovative solutions.

We select up to 3 of the ten startups in alignment with our partners.These startups are solving problems that are most relevant to ourpartners. The adopted startups work closely with their health partnersduring the program to co-create, validate and implement their solution.This demand led approach ensures that startups often come out of theprogram with strong problem-solution fit and launching customers.

While most mentors offer advice and network introductions, ourlead mentors work more hands-on as temporary co-founders, in astrategic framework co-developed with our mentors, investors, andexperts. Our investors help founders becoming investor ready inmultiple deep dive sessions.

We work with all the founders to balance the team. Adjust theirbusiness model for scale and support with high-value customer andinvestor deals. We ensure our participating startups have access tosufficient funding. Rockstart Health will invest an additional €300kin the best performing startups to help them in their journey to scale.Thanks to our three main events; Health Partner Day, Health Summitand our Demo Day, startups get even more opportunities to close thebest investor and customer deals.

Therefore we’ve designed a full-year program tocover all domains in more depth. The composition and experience of the teamsform the base for our tailored programs. We start with the Foundation Phase that covers the first three months for allteams, which lays the groundwork for the organization of the future. Startupspick 1 out of 4 dedicated tracks focussed on different startup growth trajectoriesafter the foundational phase. These tracks cover progress on e.g. product or sales.

An all new health leadership program for our partners.Attract. Implement. Scale.

The all-new health leadership program helps our health partners to attract,implement and scale the right startup solutions. Most startup and health organ-ization collaborations fail or take too long, or end up being too expensive. Tohelp our startups becoming successful, we have to support our health partnersalso. With our more than full-year program, we help health leaders to be moresuccessful collaborating with startups and accelerate their innovation.

We start by identifying a select number of innovation themes where startup col-laboration brings the most value to our health partner. Together with the boardand innovation leaders, we recognize the right themes through two workshops.They form the basis for a months-long scouting and selection process to find thebest matching startups from our global startup pipeline. The partners are inti-mately involved in the sourcing and selection process to develop crucial startupselection skills along the way. When the program starts our health partners getaccess to our startup scale program content. Plus, the health leadership programconsisting of 10 workshops and a two-week startup in-residence program. Witha ten ticket access to the Health Partner Day, Demo Day and our Health Summitthe health leadership program is complete.

Rockstart Health is located in Europe’s most open-minded health ecosystem,Health Valley, The Netherlands. Within The Netherlands, it's the city of Nijm-egen and the Province of Gelderland that focus on health, high-tech and foodinnovation. With lots of classic health leaders and “semi”- closed health ITplatforms it’s already hard enough to innovate in health. Our health partnerSint Maartenskliniek is the first European hospital to migrate their “semi”-closed IT platform to an open cloud platform. Also, some of our other healthpartners are making progress. These open cloud platforms create lots of oppor-tunities for health startups. Plus, our partners Radboudumc and the Ministry ofHealth initiated the Health Innovation School that trains future health leaderson how to lead and make room for health innovation.

The Netherlands is one of the most advanced digital economies in the EU. And90-93% of the Dutch can speak English. The Dutch health system is the mostconsumer-friendly EU healthcare system, and it has the highest adoption of IT inhospitals. It’s the collaborative DNA of the Dutch that opens up new opportuni-ties to find new partners here. It’s, therefore, this country where entrepreneursand radically open-minded health leaders can work together to impact health.Only together it’s possible to scale new health solutions towards patients andconsumers, faster.

Health is the number 1 sector that drives the Sustainable Development Goals.It’s the number 1 or 2 sector most important sector for 13 out of 16 SustainableDevelopment Goals. On 25 September 2015, more than 190 world leaders agreedon 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. It has been said that the SDG’sare “the closest thing the Earth has to a strategy”.

Luckily we see tech giants like e.g. Salesforce, Apple, Amazon and Google movinginto the health space to impact it at scale. Apple CEO Tim Cook said earlier hisyear “If you zoom out into the future, and you look back, and you ask the question,‘What was Apple’s greatest contribution to mankind?’ It will be about health,”

Startups, scale ups and investors are also moving more into health. With theyear over year growth in global startup funding showing more investments eachyear. And we see a rise in the amount of dedicated health investments funds.Lastly, corporations like Roche, Philips etc. are buying health startups to acceler-ate their digital capabilities. All in all, the time is now to impact health. At scale.

Case 01MedAngel

Rockstart Health 1 alumni MedAngel closed their series A funding round in2018. The company offers a unique solution that empowers individuals livingwith chronic conditions to eliminate the uncertainty about the storage andtransport conditions of their medications.

Case 02Tinybots

Rockstart Health 1 alumni Tinybots shipped their first 500 social Tessa robotsin 2018. Tessa is a small robot that structures the day of people with dementia.Tessa activates people with dementia and supports their independence. The littlerobot gives informal caregivers, family and health care professionals the oppor-tunity to help when no one can be present at home. They’ve partnered with theHAN University of Applied Sciences to study how Tessa supports dementia care.

We’ve seen the positive impact of social ro-botics in (home) care. This is also confirmedby the HAN University of Applied Scienc-es study. Tessa helps people not forget toeat, to get ready in time for the taxi to goto daytime activities or prepare for the nextmoment of care.

Case 03GoClinic

Rockstart Health 2 alumni GoClinic signed in 2018 a contract with health partnerSint Maartenskliniek. Together with five other companies, like Salesforce andIntersystems, they co-build the first European hospital in the cloud. They developa patient care system to improve the patient hospital experience and more.

CASPERHESPManager ICT, Sint Maartenskliniek

Dec 12, 2018, we signed a contract with six suppliers to build an important innovation for theSint Maartenskliniek; In 2019, the patient portal of the Sint Maartenskliniek will be realized,which digitally supports our communication with patients, their treatments and communica-tion with the partners in our care network. The way we approach this is new in healthcare,and experienced by people mostly in other sectors. Moreover, we are Europe’s first hospitalto work with Salesforce.

Case 04Renaltracker

Rockstart Health 2 alumni Renaltracker is a self-management platform to delaydialysis for chronic kidney disease patients in between doctor’s visits. It usesbehavior change focused technology and a personal renal health coach on de-laying dialysis. They concentrated on direct-to-patient food logging during theprogram with most of the revenues coming from information products. Throughthe program and beyond, they were able to have meaningful collaborationswith KOL’s and medical centers in Holland and are preparing for clinical valida-tion of their behavioral change platform in 2019.

Case 05Cedexis Eyewear

Rockstart Health 3 Alumni Cedexis Medical Eyewear develops an audiovisualdistraction platform for non-pharmacological pain and stress management.Their solution consists of a near-eye display (video glasses) and a content plat-form. They were a 2-person company at the start of the program, with alreadya small revenue stream from their products. They’ve made the right steps sincethe program, by signing a pilot deal with the national blood bank Sanquin.Thanks to domestic sales growth they were able to expand their team to 10members. They’ve evolved their hardware and software technology and profes-sionalized salesforce. They’ve started sales in the German market.

2019 is a big year for Cedexis. Lots of time, resources, effort in productdevelopment, team development and location, while balancing revenuestream in 2018. 2019 years forming a solid basis for further European growth.

Case 06DeepDee

Rockstart Health 3 alumni Deepdee closed a 350.000 euro deal in 2018 withRotterdam Eye Hospital during the program. The hospital scientifically validatestheir diagnostic AI solution for eye doctors. With the current method, it takesone week on average to get an eye diagnosis. Their hardware agnostics soft-ware solution lets doctors and eye professionals diagnose the three most com-mon eye diseases under a second. They aim to be the world’s first with theirglaucoma solution. To speed up the size and accuracy of their retina databasethey’ve established an R&D office in Minsk employing 20 people and are aboutto start screening 150.000 people in Africa.

Next to closing our seed round in 2018 we are impressed by the RotterdamEye Hospital partnership. They don’t only help us scientifically validate oursolution. They even fly to our second office in Belarus to help train ten ofour doctors in retina scan annotation techniques.
