Background information
Regional Academies of Sport in NSW were largely formed by the Department of Sport and
Recreation, following the initiative of a group of business people in the Illawarra who established
the Illawarra Academy of Sport, in 1980.
Academies were developed to provide an environment where talented athletes across NSW could
access services to assist in developing local talent without having to leave home and travel to
capital cities, such as Sydney.
Today, there are 11 NSW Regional Academies of Sport servicing over 2000 athletes annually.
The South West Sydney Academy of Sport was formed in 1997 by the NSW Department of Sport
and Recreation and became an autonomous not for profit organisation, in November 2002.
What do we do?
The Academy seeks to maximize each athlete’s full potential by providing excellence in coaching
and education and also provide a pathway for talented athletes to progress through to the NSW
Institute of Sport, State, or National Level representation.
Programs are provided ‘mainly off season’, so it does not to interfere with athletes wishing to
compete in their home competition. Skill, educational and community values are added to an
athletes normal training and playing schedule.
Who do we service?
Talented junior athletes who either live within, go to school within, or are registered with a sporting
organisation within one of the Local Government areas serviced by the Academy.
The Academy currently provides service to the Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly
local government areas in all Academy sports. Athletes range between the ages of 11 and 19 years
depending on the structure of the program.
Partners
Each sports program is conducted in partnership with its relevant State Sporting Organisation, or
peak sporting body. All programs form a part of the sports NSW athlete pathway and provide
athletes with a clear understanding of their sporting career progression.
The NSW Government via its Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation Division, is the principal
financial partner of each Regional Academy of Sport. The regions four local Councils are
Foundation Partners of the Academy and have Board and Sub Committee representation.
These Councils also provide access to sporting facilities for Academy athletes. Campbelltown City
Council also provides the Academy administration centre. Corporate partners provide financial
support to enable the Academy to operate and grow.

Chairperson Report
On behalf of the Board of South West Sydney Academy of Sport, it is with the greatest of pleasure, that I present the 21st annual Chairperson Report for the period July 2017 to June 2018.
I am proud to say the Academy continues to strengthen its position as the premier sports development organisation in the Macarthur and Liverpool region. It is now highly recognised for its good community work across our regions sporting, local community and government landscape.
This type of recognition has been achieved though the hard work of a wide range of people and organisations involved with the Academy.
It is also my pleasure to report, that the Academy currently provides high quality sports training and education programs and additional sports development opportunities to over 300 talent identified male and female athletes, aged between 11 and 19 years, from across the Academy region. The Academy has again excelled in its provision of wide-ranging sports development opportunities to its coaching and support staff members and associated volunteer supporters. These opportunities are provided with the view of enhancing the personal development and relevant Academy skills of these wonderful time-generous people. A significant number of these opportunities have been made available with the assistance of the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE, the NSW Office of Sport - Sport and Recreation, and a range of supportive corporate partners and private education providers. As the Academy’s sports education and also its community citizenship education continues to expand, local education providers such as the Western Sydney University and the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE remain integral components of the Academy’s education service delivery.
These highly accommodating organisations support the Academy with the provision of facilities, equipment, lecturers and Diploma and TVET education course opportunities.
This period has also seen the implementation of stage one, of the ClubsNSW funded ‘Your Local Club’ Athlete Education Program. A program specifically designed for Regional Academy athletes, with further education topics to be developed over the next two years.
Sports Programs
The inclusion of additional sports programs and maintaining fledgling and long-term programs has been a direct result of the hard work of Academy staff members and it’s coaching and support volunteers. During the period, a major change has taken place in the provision of Rugby League development programs locally, with the Wests Tigers NRL Club taking ownership of all junior rugby league development and junior representative rugby league, in the Academy region. We wish the Club well in its endeavors and we thank the NSWRL, Wests Tigers NRL, Wests Magpies and local associations and clubs, for their long-standing past support of the Academy Rugby League program. This development has afforded the Academy the opportunity to transition its football code support from Rugby League, to the GWS GIANTS and NSW/ACT AFL development pathway program.
7
On the international sporting stage past Academy hockey players Emily Smith (captain) and Emily Hurtz represented the Australian Hockeyroos, in the 2018 World Cup, finishing in a creditable 4th place. Graduation Dinner The 2018 Academy Graduation and Sports Awards Dinner was successfully held at Campbelltown Catholic Club’s prestigious, ‘The CUBE’ Convention and Entertainment Centre and once again was an outstanding success, with over 500 guests in attendance. The highlight of the evening’s presentations was the very popular announcement of ‘track and field’ athletics athlete Nakeisha Brimble, as a most worthy Chairperson Award winner and ‘2017/2018 Academy Athlete of the Year’.
My congratulations also go to long-serving Academy hockey coach Mrs. Karen Southwell, on the
receipt of her 10 year, ‘Outstanding Service Award’.
Recognition As in previous years, it is most appropriate that I take this opportunity to thank the following organisations and individuals for their continued support of the Academy. The NSW Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation as the Academy’s major funding partner and its excellent provision of various resources to assist the day to day operation of the Academy. The personal and professional interest, and support of the Academy from the Department and the Minister’s Office continues to be strong and productive and we thank all concerned. The Academy’s relationship with Local Government and its Federal and State Members of Parliament is outstanding, and we thank each and every one of them for their continued interest and investment in the Academy. At the Local Government level, the Councils of Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly who continue to be great contributors, both financially and in the provision of sports facilities and resources to the Academy.
The Academy’s ‘naming rights partner’, the Campbelltown Catholic Club remains the prominent financial corporate supporter of the Academy. The return of the Academy golf program to the Campbelltown Catholic Club’s, Campbelltown Golf Club, coincided with the renewal of the Club’s most welcome sponsorship of the Academy golf program. It is also most appropriate to again thank SOUTH32 - Illawarra Coal, for its continued excellent ongoing financial support of the Academy and its interest in its athletes and their achievements. The Academy would also like to recognise its incoming corporate partners the Walker Corporation, QUBE Logistics, Country Comfort Hunts Liverpool, Ingleburn RSL, Elderton Homes, and the transition of Wests League Club, Campbelltown support from the Academy’s Rugby League, to Wests Future Stars program. The Academy is also appreciative of the ongoing support provided by the Academy’s large number of longstanding corporate partners identified within the corporate recognition section of this report.
8
Your outstanding financial and contra support enables the Academy to increase and add value to its programs and increase development opportunities for our regions aspiring athletes. To our local government representatives to the Academy Board, Campbelltown Councillor Karen Hunt, Camden Councillor Theresa Fedeli, Liverpool Councillor Karress Rhodes and Wollondilly Councillor Blair Briggs, I thank you for your personal and your Council related support. To the Western Sydney University representative to the Board, Professor Gregory Kolt, I extend a personal thank you, and I also thank the University’s Campbelltown Campus, for its ongoing provision of facilities. And, to our Academy Board Community Representatives, Mr. Ross Kelly (Deputy Chairperson), Mrs. Denise McGrath (Executive Committee), Mrs. Michelle Caruso (Executive Committee) and Mr. Ross Morrison (Convener Sports Sub Committee), I thank you for your contribution and commitment to the future direction of the Academy. And finally, to our Academy staff members, our executive director Mr. Gerry Knights, our sports
program manager Mr. James Watson and sports program and communications coordinator Miss.
Samantha Scholte, I congratulate and sincerely ‘thank you’ on behalf of the Board; for your tireless
work, passion and commitment in administering the Academy’s activities and your contribution to
the ongoing success of the Academy.
Once again, I congratulate all concerned with the Academy’s ongoing, highly remarkable
achievements.

Executive Director Report
It gives me the greatest of pleasure to report, the South West Sydney Academy of Sport is rapidly developing into an organisation that is recognised for providing much more than just sports skill development and sports education.
The Academy is now acknowledged as an organisation committed to the development of the holistic athlete, and nurturing quality community citizens of today and tomorrow.
The Academy has received countless accolades and excellent publicity over the past twelve
months from numerous quarters, but the most pleasing aspect of the period is how the Academy
has successfully met all of its operational targets.
It currently provides sports development opportunities across 17 varied sport programs, in 13 individual sports. These programs are supported by an ever-increasing number of highly dedicated volunteer coaching and support staff members.
With this size of the Academy’s current operation, it was always going to be a challenge for staff
members to service the sports program requirements, within the Academy’s budget and
resources.
However, I am pleased to report this challenge has been accomplished in an outstanding fashion,
befitting the Academy. With the majority of credit going to its sports program manager Mr. James
Watson. His personal dedication to this task has been outstanding.
Sports Programs
The ongoing challenge for the Academy is to service the always changing sports program requirements of so many varied state sporting organisations at one time and within the Academy’s means, be it financial, staffing or resource provision.
During the past twelve months the Academy has seen its largest participation sport Rugby League, replaced by a similar sized AFL program, for boys and girls.
And, the commencement of a boys and girls Basketball program.
The Academy Golf program has also returned to the Campbelltown Golf Club and will operate under the guidance of the Club’s professional coach, after three very successful years at the Antill Park Country Golf Club, Picton.
On the representative front, over 40 athletes achieved junior NSW representative selection, with a pleasing number of these athletes being selected for age- specific Australian teams.
This is an excellent achievement considering the Academy’s transition of sports programs, and a larger percentage of more junior athletes.
And, I am pleased to report that an exceptionally large number of Academy athletes achieved regional, or similar high-level school representation.
Another gratifying aspect is the growing list of past athletes representing senior NSW, and junior and senior Australian teams.
10
As stated, the Academy continues to receive praise for its commitment to the development of Australian sport, which this year again included recognition at various levels of government.
The NSW Government continues its excellent financial commitment to Regional Academies, both individually and via the Academies umbrella organisation, the Regional Academies of Sport NSW Inc.
The NSW Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation through the direction of its Minister The Hon. Stuart Ayres, also continues to provide quality strategic support to the Academy; and meaningful opportunities to further the development of all NSW Regional Academies.
Leading sport development organisations, the New South Wales Institute of Sport and the Australian Institute of Sport, have also placed greater importance on the work of Regional Academies, with regard to developing positive sport out-comes in both the athlete and coach development pathways, and have substantially increased their engagement with Academies overall.
State sporting organisations are also providing greater input and clearer ‘athlete, coach and official, development pathway strategies’, with regard to the formation and placement of Academy programs.
This form of ongoing quality engagement with the Academy’s peak organisations is seen to be highly beneficial to all concerned.
The 2018 ‘Your Local Club’ Academy Games was successfully hosted by the Hunter Academy of Sport, across various venues in the Newcastle region.
This highly successful multi-sport event attracted over 1,000 athletes, coaches and team officials representing nine Academies across eight core sports.
As in previous years, our Academy heavily supported the sports program preparation and operation of the Games, and also competed in six of the available sports. And, in doing so I am proud to report the Academy was represented by over 100 athletes and 15 officials, one of the largest participating Academies overall.
The Academy has continued to expand its athlete and coaching staff ‘sport and skill development’ education, with the support of a wide range of service and venue providers. Education sessions were provided at the University of Western Sydney’s Campbelltown Campus, the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE - Macquarie Fields Campus, plus a wide range of various sporting venues across the Academy region. ClubsNSW has also financially supported the development of an excellent suite of sports education resources specifically designed for Regional Academies and commenced its three-year roll-out in 2018. The Academy’s 2018 Graduation and Sports Awards Dinner was again an outstanding success with over 500 guests in attendance. The inclusion of Academy athletes acting as emcees during the evening was once more well received and highlighted the outstanding skills and attributes of these fine young people.
And the intensely contested South West Sydney Academy of Sport ‘Athlete of the Year’ - Chairperson’s Award’ was ultimately awarded to Wests Future Stars program, athletic track and field athlete Nakeisha Brimble.
11
As the South West Sydney Academy of Sport continues to establish its position, as the region’s leading ‘talented athlete’ development organisation, its partnerships with its community and corporate partners also continues to expand.
A sincere thank you must go to all Academy corporate partners, state and local sporting organisations and contra supporters, who have provided financial and or practical support to the Academy, during the past 12 months.
And as in previous years, a special thank you must go to the Academy’s ‘naming rights’ partner the Campbelltown Catholic Club and ‘platinum partner’ SOUTH32 - Illawarra Coal for financially recommitting to the Academy.
The Academy is developing into something very special under professional direction of its Board of Management and the guidance of its Executive Committee. The quality of support provided by the Board, its Executive team and the Academy’s Sports Sub Committee members has been outstanding.
My thanks’ go again to our Chairperson Mr. Peter Campbell, Deputy Chairperson Mr. Ross Kelly and Sport Sub Committee Convener Mr. Ross Morrison, for their praiseworthy guidance and personal support.
And, I also congratulate and sincerely thank the following Board Members Cr. Karen Hunt, Cr. Karress Rhodes, Cr. Theresa Fedeli, Cr. Blair Briggs, Mrs. Denise McGrath, Mrs. Michelle Caruso and Professor Gregory Kolt, for their professionalism and camaraderie, during the past 12 months.
When recognising assistance, the amazing support provided freely by the Academy’s wide range
of volunteers continues to amaze me. Volunteers are the backbone of the Academy and I am
confident that the Academy will continue to thrive and increase its local recognition and quality of
service, due to their outstanding community pride and commitment.
And, I look forward to continuing the good work of the Academy with each and every one of you, as the Academy continues to evolve, into an organisation highly valued by its community.

SPORTS EDUCATION
Sports education and sports specific skill development remain the cornerstones of athlete development, for the South West Sydney Academy of Sport. Athletes undertake a selection of core and elective sports career related subjects, in lecture based and practical situations. These educational programs operate in conjunction with the athletes identified skill-based development program. Discussions are held between the Academy staff and each sporting program’s head coach, plus appropriate support staff members, prior to the commencement of the squad season, to best plan the required skill development and elective education content for each sport. The Academy has taken a unique approach to sports education assessment, with a number of subjects containing minor assessment tasks, for athletes to complete. ClubsNSW through its ‘Your local club’ program has also financially supported the development of an excellent suite of sports education resources, specifically designed for Regional Academies. Core subjects include: nutrition, sports psychology, drugs in sport, youth leadership, sports medicine, injury prevention, media training, fitness testing, integrity in sport, financial fitness, mental health and first aid. Additional elective subjects include: sports strapping, massage, core strength and flexibility, recovery, officiating, motivation, time management, elite match reviews and additional age specific subjects deemed appropriate for the sport. Sports education sessions are provided in partnership with Western Sydney University, Campbelltown, and the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE - Macquarie Fields, plus a wide range of various sporting venues across the Academy region. A further core component of an athlete’s sports education program is sports specific skills training, which is developed and implemented by the respective sport’s head coach, in conjunction with requirements of the sports state sporting organisation. Each sport also has the opportunity to demonstrate the skills gained through participation in competitions such as Inter-Academy Challenge’s and Academy Games competition. The Academy is continually exploring sports education options and opportunities with internal and external educational service providers, with a view to continue to value-add to the Academy athlete education program.
15
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Coaches Education Program
The Academy has initiated a Coach Education program, focused on providing additional coaching qualifications and network support to coaches within the Academy’s region. The opportunity to gain additional coaching related qualifications has continued to assist in the development of regional based coaches during 2017/2018. The program has provided coaches and support staff members the opportunity to complete a Level 2 General Principle’s coaching certification, or Sports Trainer accreditation or, First Aid Level I or II, or equivalent accreditation. The Academy continues to provide articles, resources and education course opportunities for Academy coaches, which have been well received by coaching staff members. Coaching lectures in basic and advanced sports taping, sports psychology and core strength and flexibility have also been provided in addition to the coaches’ participation in the athlete education program.
Athlete Parent Education
The Academy has introduced an ‘Athlete Parent’s Education’ program, where parents of current athletes can participate in education sessions such as Drugs in Sport, Nutrition and Sports Massage.
South West Sydney Institute of TAFE The South West Sydney Institute of TAFE offers a Certificate IV in Fitness or any related subject annually, to an Academy coach, support staff member, or scholarship holder, as part of the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE corporate partnership education program. Macquarie Felds TAFE also continues to offer individual ‘strength and conditioning’ program opportunities to Academy athletes free of charge, a part of its TAFE student education program.
Western Sydney University
The Western Sydney University, Campbelltown Campus continues to provide lecture theatre and class room opportunities to assist in the provision of education services. 1. The development of quality Academy athlete fitness data. 2. Provided coaches and sports trainers additional practical development opportunities. 3. Increased coaches’ knowledge and ability to deliver quality and up-to-date training
programs. 4. And, provide a platform for coaches to share knowledge and experiences.
Community
The Academy also makes available the use of fitness testing equipment and fitness testing opportunities locally, where and when deemed appropriate.
