CENTERING THOUGHT

Christ for President

Let’s have Christ our President

Let us have him for our king

Cast your vote for the Carpenter

That you call the Nazarene

The only way we can ever beat

These crooked politician men

Is to run the money changers out of the temple

Put the Carpenter in

1660 Kessler Boulevard, East Drive

O It’s Jesus Christ our President

God above our king

With a job and a pension for young and old

We will make hallelujah ring

Every year we waste enough

To feed the ones who starve

We build our civilization up

And we shoot it down with wars

But with the Carpenter on the seat

Way up in the Capital town

The USA would be on the way

Prosperity Bound!

Loving God, we confess we are a people of dust and ashes.

You made us a temple of living stones, but we dishonor the

body of Christ.

You gave us your law to guide us, but we seek the wisdom of

the world.

Save us from ignoring your way. Let your commandments

rule and guide us. Help us to depend on you alone.

MUSIC IN WORSHIP

In today’s closing hymn, No. 226 “There in God’s Garden,”

we encounter the image of a tree. This is a tree of “wisdom,

knowledge, compassion and beauty.” The tree’s name is also

Jesus. This Jesus evokes from all heaven a song of thanks for his

passion, a passion which offers “healing, strength and pardon” to all

“peoples and nations.” Alabama composer K. Lee Scott named the

tune after the mountain near Birmingham, where he has resided for

over 30 years. Shades Mountain is the first ripple of the southern

Appalachian mountain chain.

The choral response (11:00) at the conclusion of the service comes

from the 2nd movement, “Confitebor,” of Mozart’s six movement

work for chorus, soloists, and orchestra, “Vesperae solennes de

Dominica,” KV321. Each movement is a setting of a different

psalm and concludes with the Gloria Patri. Chancel Choir and

orchestra will present this and other Mozart works at 4:00 pm

Sunday, March 18th in the sanctuary as part of the Sound & Spirit

arts series.
