WeWe’ve all read the discouraging headlines:“Economic Growth at a Standstill,”“Unemployment Rate Continues to Climb,”and “Possibility of a Double Dip RecessionLooms.” Yet these tough economic times didnot deter those of you who believe in highereducation and helping students in financialneed from making this year’s AlamanceCommunity College Foundation fund driveone of the most successful ever!

As an alumnus of ACC, I have never been asproud of my alma mater, and the people in ourcommunity who believe in and support it withtheir hard-earned dollars, than I am at thismoment. With the decline in textile and manu-facturing jobs in Alamance County, many ofour neighbors formerly employed in theseindustries have turned to ACC to prepare fornew careers or obtain new skills. It would beimpossible for some of these individuals toattend ACC without the financial support pro-vided by the ACC Foundation. Our faculty andstaff have risen to the occasion to meet thisdemand, offering more classes at nontradition-al times—some starting as early as 7 AM—tomeet the needs of our growing studentenrollment.

What an asset ACC is to our community! We are blessed beyond measure to have quality administrators, highly capableinstructors, and committed support personnel who strive to create and maintain an environment conducive to learning. We are also blessed to have generous and caring contributors like you, whose financial support of the Foundation andits mission remains strong despite the difficult economic times. With all this going for us, it is easy to see why ACC nowranks among the top 15 community colleges, in North Carolina, based on enrollment..

Thanks for everything you do for ACC, the Foundation, and for helping to make the dreams of many students come true.

Chandler Concrete Named 2009 ACC BusinessPartner of the YearChandler Concrete Company was presented with the 2009 Business Partner of the YearAward by the Alamance Community College Foundation at the Leadership Breakfast inDecember 2009. The award recognizes area businesses that provide outstanding support to ACCstudents and employees.

Chandler Concrete Company has shown great support of the College, the ACC Foundation, and the ACCResidential Carpentry program. Chandler Concrete’s contributions to ACC include:• Ted Chandler, President of Chandler Concrete, has been a member of the ACC Foundation Board ofDirectors since 2000. He served as president of the ACCF Board from 2003–2005, and has acted as PlannedGiving Committee Chair and Investment Committee Chair.• Chandler Concrete has been a faithful donor to the ACC Foundation since 1983, with cash gifts totaling morethan $70,000. In 2008, the company donated $50,000 for the Anniversary Campaign and earned recognition withthe naming of the Business Technologies/Industrial and Graphics Technologies Division Suite in its honor.• As a major benefactor of ACC’s Residential Carpentry program, Chandler has contributed more than $20,000 inmaterials for use in construction projects.

Chandler has further supported ACC by utilizing the educational services to train its staff. All Chandler employeeshave been trained in team building; selected staff received special computer keyboard training; and Chandler has uti-lized business specialists as lecturers at staff retreats through ACC’s Business and Industry Services.

Chandler Concrete utilized the services of ACC’s Business and Industry Services for CDL Driving School to train itsconcrete truck drivers. Ten students went through a 35-hour program on ACC’s Graham campus in 2005.

Chandler Concrete presentation included (l-r)Wally Shearin, Associate Dean of Industrial and

Graphics Technologies; ACC Foundation 2009 President Jerry Bailey;Chandler Concrete President Ted Chandler;

Tom Chandler; and Bob Chandler.

WWith local unemployment ratesremaining at historically highlevels for the entire 2009–10college year, students continuedto pour into ACC classes lookingto find new skills to make re-entry into the local workforce apossibility. Alamance CommunityCollege, the last safety net forthose destined to stand in theunemployment line, met thechallenge to find classes and facul-ty to assist the record number ofstudents attending.

Without the generous financialsupport of the ACC Foundation,it would have been virtuallyimpossible to meet many students’needs for financial assistance. With tuition increases andenrollment growth, the task ofhelping more students find morefunds to attend ACC has beendaunting. Without the over-whelming positive financial support

shown by local businesses/industries and individuals, we simply could not have done what we did. When times gottough, our base of support for the College and Foundation came through strongly.

Unfortunately, conditions have not improved to the extent we can see an end to double digit unemployment. Thededicated members of the ACC Foundation Board of Directors continue to seek funds to meet student demands. And,for this diligence, we are so very thankful. Our faculty and staff also understand the struggle to assist students, andthey, too, have increased their giving during these difficult times. With more than 95% of all full-time employeescontributing to the Foundation this past year, I know they comprehend the importance of the Foundation’s support forstudents.

Again, we are indebted to so many people who give so freely of their financial resources and energies to help makeAlamance Community College and the Foundation the jewels they are. Thank you seems so trivial at times, but it ismeant sincerely.

Dear ACC Donors andFriends,

The opportunities provided bygrowth has been our theme inthe past year. Certainly ACCand the ACC Foundation haveseen plenty of growth.

– In the past 10 years, enrollmentat ACC has grown by 52% tomore than 5,500 students. – Over the past six years, ACCFoundation aid to students hasgrown by 55% to just under$500,000 annually. – Cost per credit hour has grownby 49% in the past 5 years.

The opportunities provided bythe growth in enrollment, demand for aid and increase intuition have been numerous.

They include:– Streamlining the ACC Foundation budget to more specifically focus on providing assistance for at-risk students– Sharing a compelling message with donors about the urgent needs of our students in this difficult time– Utilizing the time and talents of our volunteers and students

The economy has contracted in Alamance County and our community college, ACC, has responded by providing alonger instructional day, more sections and more electronic options. The ACC Foundation has responded by contin-uing to provide assistance to all students who qualify and need it.

I thank you for being part of the Alamance Community College family and among its supporters.
