“Teddy Bear Workshop” n PROGRAM OVERVIEW “Teddy Bear Workshop” is a fun integrated six week program using bears to cover a wide range of objectives, including Reading, Math, Writing, Science and Social Studies. The students learn facts about real bears through reading passages, books, internet and class discussion. Students bring in their teddy bears to read to them, write stories, interview the bears, and do math activities involving their personal teddy bears. One of the students’ favorite activities is gummy bear math. Students graph their bag of gummy bears and solve all strands of math such as fractions, computation, problem solving, geometry, time, and multiplication on a teacher made worksheet for whole class practice. My program excites the students by allowing them to review math skills, concepts, and reading practices by using teddy bears – every child’s first toy! I close the unit by having a Berkley Build a Bear Workshop. Each child constructs a paper bag bear by following directions, visiting stations to decorate, stuff, and glue the bears. As an extra resource, if funding allows, the class visits the Build a Bear Workshop and builds a real stuffed bear once in December where the students build a bear to give away to needy families in our Berkley toy drive and another time in May when the students make one for themselves. It’s one of their favorite memories of second grade. n PROGRAM OVERVIEW “Teddy Bear Workshop” is a fun

integrated six week program using bears to cover a wide range of objectives, including Reading, Math, Writing, Science and Social Studies.

It’s one of their favorite memories of second grade.

n OVERALL VALUE By us ing “Teddy Bears” we

accomplish the goals of public schooling by making it innovative and enticing correlating with a child’s best friend his teddy bear. Students make meaningful connections among musical, linguistic, mathematical, scientific, social and creative ideas. They not only get to learn facts about real animals but the students apply the information into creative projects that they can be proud of.

I have f ive students who are “substantially deficient” and in my bottom twenty-five percent who need extra help. Our school is not Title I although we have 33% of our students on free and reduced lunch. Berkley Charter made AYP last year and my average Star Reading scores in the beginning of the year was 1.4 (which means the students were reading on a first grade after the fourth month level) and 3.2 (which means the students were reading on a third grade level after the second month level) at the end of the year. My average math scores were 61% at the beginning of the year and 88% at the end of the year.

n ABOUT THE DEVELOPER Jill O’Leary graduated from the

University of South Florida with a B.S., in Elementary Ed. She taught in Pinellas County in 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade before joining Polk County schools in 1999. She taught 2nd at Polk City Elementary and then transferred to Berkley Charter when it opened and is currently teaching 2nd grade.

“Teddy Bear Workshop” Jill Whitley O’LearyLesson Plan No 1: Gummy Bear Math

n SUBJECTS COVEREDMath

n GRADESOne - Three

n OBJECTIVES To be able to use gummy bears as manipulatives to solve multiplication sentences, and the following math skills:

• graphing

• making fractions

• estimation

• computation

• comparing

• measurement, and problem solving

n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS

M.A.2.A.4.2 Classify numbers as odd or even

and explain why.

M.A.2.A.4.3 Generalize numeric and non-

numeric patterns using words and tables.

M.A.2.A.6.1 Solve problems that involve repeated

addition.

n MATERIALS• Gummy bears randomly portioned

in baggies

• teacher made worksheet

• white boards

• markers

• ruler

• erasers

n DIRECTIONS Students are given baggies and teacher-made worksheet.

1. Have students estimate total bears in the baggie, least color, most color, then they open their baggy and sort the colors to write the actual amount for each.

2. Students put tally marks for each color.

3. Whole class does the following:

- Students are given multiplication number sentences for them to use gummy bears as manipulatives. For example, 3 x 5 = what?

- Students put gummies in 3 groups with five in each group.

- Then they write the answer on white boards. When I say “show me” they show their answer.

- Continue using several number sentences.

n SUBJECTS COVEREDReading and Writing

n GRADESOne - Three

n OBJECTIVES To use Kagan structures for team

building and class building while using teddy bears.

To gain knowledge of real bears and compare and contrast with teddy bears using a Venn diagram

n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS

L.A.2.5.2.2

The student will begin to use language appropriate for different occasions, audiences, and topics.

L.A.2.6.2.1

The student will generate research questions by brainstorming, identify key words, and group related ideas.

n MATERIALS• Students bring in teddy bears

• interview questions on Smartboard while using Eiki projector,

• Venn diagram,

• book Growl: A Book About Bears by Melvin Berger

n DIRECTIONS 1. Students do a team interview,

Kagan structure to introduce their bear to the team. Students ask questions to each teammate about their bear. Some examples are on the Smartboard for the students to refer to.

2. Read Growl: A Book About Bears to class. Have a class discussion on facts about bears.

3. Do Kagan structure Give One, Get One, on as many facts about bears. Students make 2 columns on notebook paper by folding it hot dog fold. Titled the first column Give One, the second Get One. Students first independently write under the Give One column. Then students circulate the room getting a new idea from each teammate and writing it under Get One.

4. Students complete a Venn diagram comparing real bears to teddy bears.

“Teddy Bear Workshop” Jill Whitley O’LearyLesson Plan No 2: Bear Introduction and Comparison

n EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT I assess the Venn diagrams having

the following: ten facts about real bears, ten facts about teddy bears, and five facts about what real bears and teddy bears have in common.

“Teddy Bear Workshop” Jill Whitley O’LearyLesson Plan No 3: Blubber Mitten Activity

n DIRECTIONS 1. Fill one of the zipper bags about

1/3 full of shortening, then turn the remaining zipper bag inside out. Place it carefully inside the bag with the shortening so that you are able to zip the one bag to the other. This creates a “blubber mitten” for the students to put their hand in.

2. Students put their bare hand in the bowl of cold water to see how cold it is.

3. Next, have students place their hand in the “blubber mitten” and place the mittened hand in the ice water. How cold does the water seem with the “blubber mitten” on?
