Reading Checkers Moves: Feel freeto make a copy of this, and keep ithandy for reading checkers moves. The two players are called Red andWhite, and in the past they were calledBlack and White. Notice that Red’spieces begin the game on 1 through12, and White’s begin on 21 through32. The game is played on the darksquares, but books and magazines(including the ACFB) normallyreverse the colors of the squares ofdiagrams to improve readability. In

the ACFB, Red is at the top of the diagram. Moves are recorded as from-to, an example being 11-15.A multiple jump is normally written like 10-26 unless that is ambiguous, then 10-19-26 is written.

Guest Beginners’ Page – Some Shots by Gerard Lopez

Gerry’s comments, when I asked him about the sources of these problems:It's hard to know who the authors of these easy problems/themes were. Theorigins are probably found in the first publications.

Loy’s comments: Notice that Red is at the bottom in these diagrams. Thesolutions are at the bottom of National Tournament page 112. These areexamples of common shots. Similar shots may actually look different. You(and the rest of us) need to be alert enough to see the easier shots when theycome up in almost every game.

Computer Checkers – Annotate Your Games – by Jim Loy

Serious checker players often annotate their own games. This is usually done for personal trainingpurposes, and not usually for publication. And, it is very important to use a computer whileannotating. Of course, the computer helps make your annotations sound and correct. And, theannotator’s number one job is to find the errors. The reason that I am writing about this is thatplayers, from beginners to the strongest Masters, sometimes fool themselves. They think that theyplayed great games which were actually filled with errors, and a few of these games were publishedas perfect games. It is nearly impossible to improve your play, when you continue to ignore yourerrors. And the computer will find most errors in less than one second.

Beginners’ Page – Beginners and Three-Move – by Jim Loy

I think that most beginners shun three-move (where the first three moves of the game are chosen atrandom), and prefer go-as-you-please (GAYP, where you can make any opening moves that youwant). Maybe you think that your opponents know all about the many strong and weak openings, and that your lack of knowledge will be exposed with depressing results. Well, I suppose you willbe playing in the Minor division of tournaments, where almost none of the players have studied more

than three or four of the 156 openings. You will have some strongpositions, even against stronger players, like you will never see in GAYP.Yes you will often lose your way, same as GAYP. But you will be on yourway to becoming a better player. I think you will enjoy three-move.

Problem, White to win: As usual, White is at the bottom of the diagram.Roy Little sent me two similar, original problems, one of which had twosolutions. This is the other one. I will publish the solution in the next issueof the ACFB.
