Golf has a few different examplesof circles and lines:

The golf ball is a circle and thegolf club is a line!

The hole is a circle and theflagstick is a line!

The green is a circle and thefairway is a line!

How about the golf swing? Is that acircle or a line?

The golfer wants the ball to godown the line but the real ques-tions is, do we want to swing thegolf club down the target line or ina circle? Take a second to reflecton that question. Do you wantyour club to go down the line tothe target or does the club movemore in a circle? If you have a ten-dency to slice the ball, this ideamay be of particular interest toyou.

Take a travel back in time to thestory of David and Goliath. Davidhad a rock on a string that wasused to kill Goliath. Now thequestion is, was David moving therock on the string in a straight lineor in a circle? It was a circle, andwhen the swinging rock wenthurtling toward Goliath, the rockmoved in a straight line! Said inanother way, when an object comesoff a circle it goes straight a tangentto that circle.

When we think of a golf club and agolf ball, it is useful to see the clubmoving around the body in a circle. The body turns rotationally, thussetting the movement for the clubin a circle. When you allow theclub to move around the bodywithout interrupting it, it willcome into contact with the ballwhich is then propelled down thetarget line. The important idea is

not to stop rotating when you hitthe ball but to continue your circleall the way to the finish. It shouldfeel like you’re not aiming at theball, the ball is just in the middleof the rotational movement of theclub.

The golf club actually seeks its ownalignments when we simply put inmotion and allowed to create itscircle.

Let’s look back at David and Go-liath and answer another question. Is the string tight or loose? Well, when the rock is going around, thestring appears to be tight, however,it is actually taut, which is quitedifferent. The string is loose butbecause of the movement andweight of the rock it is pulledstraight.

In a golf swing, do you want yourarms to be like ropes (just hanging)or tight? The arms should simplyhang down from the shouldersloosely and when the rotationalforces from the body turn affectthem, they are pulled to visuallylook tight. We can all visualize apicture of a golfer at the top oftheir backswing with a straight leftarm, but how did it come to bestraight? It was loose and thenpulled taut from the rotationalmovement of the golf swing andclub.

The most important circle in golf isthe circle the club makes aroundthe body and the most importantline is the line the ball shoots offon when propelled from that circle!Slicers tend to try to keep the clubmoving down the target line afterthe ball is struck. Give that ideaup and let the club continue on itsintended circle around to the finishand you will see your ball fly longand straight. The purer your circle, the straighter the ball will fly!

Play TimeBY RICH MUELLER

I remember the first birdie I ever made -it was the 12th hole, a par 3 at WaverlyMunicipal, a somewhat shoddy little par69 layout next to Jells Park at thebottom of Wheelers Hill in Melbourne,Australia. I hit a 4 wood on the screws, landing it just short of the green andbouncing it up some 12 feet from thehole. The putt broke sharply from leftto right down hill and when it went in Ifelt a brief moment of euphoria followedby the realization that I now had crossedsome unexplainable threshold thatinstantly raised my expectation level forall future shots. I was ten years old andofficially hooked on the game.

There were no driving ranges orpractice facilities in Melbourne at thattime so I learned on the golf course. Isuppose that's why I've always felt morecomfortable playing golf instead ofpracticing. To that extent I learned howto use my time on the courseproductively, coming away with a feelingof improvement every time. Here are 4ways that you can really improve yourgame by making your PLAYING timemore productive and fun.

1. PLAY A ROUND WITH 3 CLUBS.Your creativity and decision making willbe immediately put to the test! There'sno better way to exercise yourimagination than to play 3 - club.

2. TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF EVERY SHOT.

Speaking of imagination, remember thisverse from John Lennon: "Imagine allthe people, living for today." Yep, that'sright. You're going to throwexpectations out the window and enjoygolf for what it is - a game - playing eachshot in the moment and accepting theresults, whatever they may be. Thismeans you’re going to forget about par,the designated score value set for eachhole. Who cares what the par is? It'sjust a number. The 9th hole atRandolph runs parallel to AlvernonBlvd. It's a 455 yard par 5. Expertgolfers routinely make eagles and birdieson the hole and are usually disgustedwhen they make a 5 or higher. But Iremember when it was a par 4 (samehole, same yardage) and bogies anddouble bogies were common place.Obviously the self-imposed pressuresassociated with the thoughts of a

BRUTALLY LONG PAR 4 were toomuch to overcome.

3. USE YOUR RECALL.If you have a favorite hole that youalways seem to hit a good drive on, recallthat hole in your mind and transpose itmentally over the view of the tee shotthat is posing problems for you. Thenrelax and hit your favorite tee shot. Tryit - it really works!

4. PLAY THE PUTTING GREEN.This simply means that 5 minutes beforeyou tee off, use one ball only and puttaround the clock. You will have lots oflong putts followed by short putts. It'sgreat preparation for your "real" round.

Fourteen years after my first birdie Ireturned to Melbourne to play in the1986 Australian Open. For old time’ssake I teed it up again at WaverlyMunicipal and this time when I played the12th hole it was a smooth 9 iron to 12feet. The putt broke sharply from left toright down hill and when it went in I felta brief moment of euphoria. Some thingsnever change!

5 Keys to High-SpinWedge ShotsTHE KEYS TO HITTING WEDGE SHOTS THATWILL STOP QUICKLY ON THE GREENS

BY CORY WILKES

Putting maximum spin on a wedge shot requires the rightlie. Specifically, the ball must be sitting up and lying cleanly, with little to no grass behind it. The more the ball’s surface isexposed to the clubface, the more it will spin.

1) Lean Left: Plant most of your weight on your left (front)leg and lean your upper body slightly towards the target. Thiswill encourage a steep swing, which promotes hitting the ballbefore the turf. Improve your chances of taking a steep swingand precise contact by opening your stance; this will alsoprevent excessive lateral movement and restrict back swinglength.

2) Swing Upright: During the backswing keep your weight onyour front leg and your upper body leaning towards the target.Restrict body motion as you swing your arms on an uprightpath. Above all keep your arms and the club in front of yourbody rather than letting them swing around to your side orbehind you.

3) Check Your Impact: Freeze and check your impact positionin front of a mirror. At impact the left wrist should be ahead ofthe ball, the shaft angled toward the target, and the right(back) knee should be pointed ahead of the ball. The properwrist and shaft positions ensure that the clubface hits the ballfirst and not the turf.

4) Finish Strong: For maximum backspin, the right (trailing)arm should not rotate over the left (leading) arm through theimpact. Instead rotate the entire right side through the shot topromote good acceleration and prevent “scooping” (where theclub head passes the hands before impact). You want to feel asif you are compressing the ball against the clubface.

Out inBASIC BUNKER TIPSBY ADAM BRUNGARDT AND BRADY NEEDENS

Arizona bunkers are notorious forbeing hard and having no sand inthem, creating a difficult shot foreven a seasoned golfer. Being able tobe out of the bunker in one shot isthe main goal for many golfers. Hereare a few tips to getting the most outof your bunker play.

CLUB SELECTION:In the hard desert bunkers a wedgewith a small degree of bounce isneeded. Bounce is designed into thegolf club to allow the club to enterthe sand and “bounce” out, otherwiseknown as splashing through the sand. The splash is virtually impossible inhard bunkers. Hard bunkers arealmost impossible to hit out of with ahigh bounce club, therefore therecommended club is a lob wedge, gap wedge, pitching wedge or a lowbounce sand wedge.

FACE ANGLE:For newcomers to the desert orbeginning golfers, the face angleshould be square to the target. Thiswill allow you to practice gettingconsistent contact and repeatabledistance. As the player advances, theycan open the club face to create ahigher trajectory and increase theamount of spin.

STANCE:The basic bunker shot set-up canbe made by starting by aiming theclubface on the target line andputting the ball in the middle ofyour stance with your feet together. Then take a 6-inch step left withyour left foot and a 6-inch stepright with your right foot and buildyour stance. You want to positionthe golf ball about 1-2 ball widthsback of center. This will allow the

ball to be contacted first, just like achip shot.

SWING: The swing in a hard bunker should belike a chip shot motion. This willallow you to pickthe golf ball cleanout of the bunker.Using a higherlofted club like thelob wedge willallow the ball tocome out of thebunker highenough to clearthe lip and carryto the green.

Remember: Thetempo of the sandshot is moreimportant thanthe hit. And moreimportantlygravity will takethe club down tothe bottom ofyour swing; youdo not have to addany power to this shot.

PRACTICE TIP:Without any golf balls, start with twoparallel lines in the sand spaced 3-inches apart. Place the club on theback line and build your stance justlike a normal bunker shot from thatpoint. While stepping forward aftereach swing, swing trying to take thesand out from between the two lines. This will teach the mind to makecontact with the sand at this pointand pick the ball cleanly out of thebunker.

Using these tips, you will be able toget out of the bunker in one shot andstart lowering your scores andenjoying your golf game more.

BY TRENT DAVIS

Today’s lesson will cover the Pre-ShotRoutine. Why do we need one? Howdo we establish one? When is a goodtime to use one? These are thequestions I will try to answer intoday’s lesson. The pre-shot routine issometimes overlooked and probablythe first thing we forget to repeatwhen we get frustrated. Theimportant thing to remember whenestablishing a routine is to keeprepeating the same thing over and overusing a combination of three learningstyles. The three styles include:Kinesthetic (the feel or touch style),Auditory (hearing), and Visualization.

The first question on everyone’s mindis why. The purpose of having a pre-shot routine is consistency. The way Ilook at it is if you start your day offwith a set routine and that routine iskept consistent, then the rest of yourday should be fairly good dependingupon the small obstacles we are facedwith in our day to day lives. The sameapplies to a golf course, and the moreconsistent we are with ourpreparation, the better our round isgoing to be.

The next question is how. We oftenwonder how when facing anythingnew in our lives and especially our golfgame. This is where the three styles oflearning are essential to the process. No two players are the same with thisstage of the process and not everyone

will use all three styles. Theimportant thing is to findsomething that is easy torepeat and works for YOU.You might take things fromwatching another golfer orreading something in amagazine. The point is tofind something that comeslike second nature and stickwith it. First address the ballthe same way every time. Find atarget in the distance and focus onthat throughout your routine. Youmay want to have the club in yourhand gripped as though you werehitting the ball the whole time; try tofeel the shot in your hands if you havetrouble visualizing a shot in yourmind. I like to hear the grass brushthe bottom of my club head during mypractice swings. The pre-shot routineshould be the same for every shotexcept the putt. The routine for theputt will change only because thestroke is completely different from thefull swing, as everyone knows. Just tryto make it your own. Finally, thequestion of when. The simple answeris every time and every round youplay. Whether you are playing for funor in a competitive situation the pre-shot routine should never be put aside. The reason for this is repetitive actionusually results in the same outcome. You start your day the same and hopeit ends the same. You start your golfgame off on the right foot and hopeyou finish the day exactly the same

way you started.

There you have it. Easier said thandone, right? Most things are, but ifyou put in the time and practice a Pre-Shot Routine is not that hard toincorporate into your game. The keything to remember is after you have aset routine, try not to stray from it.Remember the routine like the back ofyour hand. We covered the why, howand when and now the question is willyou have the discipline and patience tomake it work for you.

Chipping should be usedwhen off the green and arenot able to putt.

With its simple swing andsmall choice of club selec-tion the chip shot has a veryhigh success rating. It shouldbe used from the edge of thegreen to 15 ft away.

Clubs:Next comes the clubs, theclub choice depends on theplacement of the pin. A 9iron should be used for apin in the front of thegreen, 8 iron for a middlepin, and a 7 iron for a backpin.

Grip: When getting ready to hita chip shot the pressurethat is applied is very im-portant. So take a normalgrip but just loosen up thegrip pressure allowing youto feel a better rhythm asyou hit the shot.

Stance:When taking the stance startwith the feet together andthe ball in the middle. Keepthe end of the club pointingtowards the belly button andtake one step with the leftfoot towards the target ap-plying 70% of the bodyweight to the left foot. If

you kept the end of the clubfacing the belly button thehands should now be aheadof the ball which allows for amore crisp contact when hit-ting the shot.

Swing:Your swing is going to bemainly with the upper bodyand bigger muscles whiletrying not to hinge thewrists very much. The armsshould move “pocket topocket”. On the backswing,go back till your hands getto your right hip and onyour follow through go toyour left hip. This constantmotion will make it easiermanage distance control.Control the distance withclub choice rather thenlength of swing.

Tempo:When thinking tempo, tryand keep the backswingand downswing on thesame tempo. Think of aclock… Tic…..Toc ……the clocks speed neverchanges, neither should thetempo of your chip.

The best part of the chipshot is whether you are a 1handicap or a 30 the meth-ods are all the same. Themore basic you can make itthe more quickly you canperfect it. Try this methodand you will be getting itup and down in no time.

Let’s say your little crumb-cruncher isgetting old enough to be interested ingolf. You have visions of some greatfather/mother-son or father/mother-daughter golf matches in your future. And, come-on, let’s be honest. Thethought of seeing the apple of your eyeputting for the lead in a PGA or LPGAmajor has crossed your mind at leastonce.

You want to encourage that interest; soyou decided to cut down one of your oldsets of clubs. There. Now he or she hasa nice set to get started with—just likethe cut down set you got from your dad.Right?

Wrong! Let me put it this way. If youwant to make dead certain that yourlittle Tiger or Annika will develop atotally lame swing, all you have to do iscut down a set of adult clubs and givethem to him or her. They will be tooheavy, too stiff, the wrong loft, thewrong lie, and probably the wronglength. Other than that, they will be justwhat the kid needs to develop as a golfer.

Should you perhaps cut down a club ortwo just to find out if he or she wouldenjoy taking a few cuts at a golf ball?

Sure that makes sense, although youmight first try to hunt for a single juniorclub for $5 to $10 at a used sportsequipment store. But, when you hearhim ask for another bucket, or hear hercomplain about leaving the driving rangetoo soon, it's time to get some properjunior clubs.

Since 2000, there are a couple ofcompanies who have made a real nichefor themselves by offering good qualitypre-made junior sets. The lofts arefriendly, shafts are more flexible, weightsare a little lighter and grips are smaller. They offer the sets in pre-madecategories of "age 5-8" and "age 9-12"with the substantial difference beingtheir lengths, judged on the basis ofaverage heights for kids in these two agegroups.

The only drawbacks to the pre-madejunior sets might be their price and thepossibility that your son or daughterhappens to be outside the "nationalaverage" for height for his or her age, from which the standard lengths of thesesets are created. Thus, we come back toyour local professional clubmaker whocan custom build him, her (or you) a set.And don't panic about that "custombuilt" part. It's been my experience thatthe vast majority of clubmakers do notcharge prices for their junior clubs that

come even close to the prices you wouldpay for the pre-made premium brandedjunior sets found in retail golf shops. I’vefound that most custom clubmakers havea real soft spot for kids who are reallygetting interested in the game.

One last point...

Try to resist the temptation to buy clubsthat are too long with the expectationthat he or she will "grow into them." Hemight well do that, but if they’re toolong, you’re forcing him to hit withsomething that could cause him to learna bad swing, and you know how hard itis to UN-learn that swing later on.

If that means you need to get him or hera new set every year or two, get over it.As long as your kid or grandkid is reallyinto the game, it's a better deal thanthose tap-dancing lessons you sprang for,not to mention the $200 thinprofile/camera/text messaging cell phonehe or she just had to have (this monthanyway). You're giving the kid a gift thatwill literally keep giving for the rest ofhis or her life, long after you're gone. That's no small thing. Besides, it's asmall price to pay to watch your sonwalk up the 18th fairway at Augustawith a 12-stroke lead, or your daughtertake that dive into the pond at theDinah Shore, right?

Are you less confident in your abilityto manage your portfolio today thanyou were a year ago? If your answer is"yes," you are not alone. Even themost seasoned financial professionalsare finding the current marketdifficult to navigate. But confidence ininvestment skills should not be basedon the market's recent twists andturns. Instead, it should stem from anunderstanding of investmentfundamentals and the commonmistakes that individual investors tendto make.

Mistake #1: Not ManagingExpectationsA big part of succeeding as an investoris having the right expectations aboutwhat you can achieve by putting yourmoney into stocks, bonds and cash. There is nothing wrong with hopingfor the best from your investments. After all, it's human nature. Howeveryou could end up far short of yourgoal if you harbor unrealistic returnassumptions. Instead of dreaming of

success, use historical investmentreturns to help keep your expectationsrooted in reality. For instance, over the30-year period ending December 31,2008, U.S. stocks averaged totalreturns of 11.00%; long-term U.S.government bonds averaged 10.14%,and cash averaged 5.99%.* Keep theselong-term averages in mind -- alongwith your time frame and attitudeabout risk -- when deciding how toinvest your money.

Mistake #2: Chasing Hot Stocksand OvertradingThe problem with pursuing popular ortop-performing stocks is that by thetime you hear about them, they mayhave already reached theirperformance peak. Chasing pastwinners is closely correlated to anotherpotential investment mistake --overtrading. Shuffling yourinvestments too often may increase thechance that you'll buy high and selllow. One potential solution: Workclosely with a qualified financialprofessional, who can help you avoidthe urge to trade frequently.

Mistake #3: "Setting andForgetting" Your Investment MixWhen was the last time you checkedyour portfolio's asset allocation? Youmight be surprised to find that strong –or weak- returns in one area havecaused a shift in your portfolio thatcould affect your ability to reach goalsor manage risk. Review your account atleast once or twice a year to make surethat it remains in line with yourinvestment goals. If not, you may needto rebalance. While investment mistakesdo happen, you can try to minimizetheir impact. Learn from the missteps ofothers and consult with a qualifiedfinancial professional to start improvingyour investment strategy today.
