ARMA International’s Conference at The Venetian in Las Vegas October 28-30! Need I say more. The facility was amazing in its opulence. The educa-tion was top-notch. The networking opportunities were exceptional. And thanks to the fine work of Ginny Jones and Darlene Barber, the light beamed brightly on our Chapter as the Christine Zanotti Award was pre-sented to them in the opening session for the book they co-authored, Emer-gency Management for Records & Information Management Programs, Second Edition. Congratulations Ginny and Darlene!!! Be sure to ask them
for autographs!
Now that I have returned from the glitz of Las Vegas, there’s a chill in the air and I’m already thinking of the upcoming holiday season. I think about those in need and the unique opportuni-ties Tidewater ARMA has selected to give to our community. This month at our November 19 meeting, we invite everyone to bring non-perishable food items for donation to the Virginia Pen-insula Foodbank. The Foodbank’s supplies are lower at this time of year when the chill in the air contributes to the greater need in our community. Help us fight hunger this season. Mone-tary gifts are also accepted – they weigh less and are easier to carry!
Also at this meeting will be the kickoff of our Angel Tree Charitable Event. Over the past weeks names of children in need have been submitted by our members. Our Standing Rules provide that we may select up to four children for this event. In making selections, we try to meet the greatest need as evidenced in member submissions. Beautifully adorned holiday bags bearing tags with suggested gift items will await your selection at the meeting. Just choose a bag (or two) for a boy or girl, purchase the suggested item, place it in the bag, and return the bag at our Holiday Party in December. If you cannot attend in December, just contact Charitable Events Committee Chair Darlene Barber to ensure your gift gets to the selected child.
This meeting occasion is our annual joint session with Richmond AIIM/ARMA members, and will be held at the Fort Magruder in Williamsburg. We have invited one of Tidewater ARMA’s favor-ites, Angela Costello, to share with us on mentoring in records management. She’s sure to chal-lenge and inform as she unveils the keys to successful mentoring to help us empower positive changes in our workplaces. Join us, won’t you?

Lightning and the 3 C's
History has provided a wonderful analogy for the chal-
lenge and opportunity presented by mentoring. We can easily imagine Ben Franklin on a stormy night holding
a long string reaching into the clouds connected to a
small kite. A seemingly crazy scientist conducting an
experiment to see if lightening could
be caught...redirected and transformed into a powerful and useful resource. The difference between historical
and hysterical or more accurately...tragedy and tri-
umph...was a simple key positioned in the right place
at the right time.
Mentoring is very much the same concept. Lightning
and the 3 C's will reveal the keys to successful mentor-ing and help you empower positive changes in your
workplace.

GGIVINGIVING TTHANKSHANKS
Each year we meet with our sister ARMA chapter in Richmond
and the Old Dominion Chapter of AIIM. This joint meeting allows us to expand our networking to gain even more knowledge and
contacts in our profession. We also use this meeting to give back to the community as a way of saying thank you for the profes-sional year. As usual this year we will be collecting non-
perishable food items for the food bank and will have the Angel
Tree bags available for folks to pick up.
Please participate in both these community causes as you enjoy
the good food and program.
AANGELNGEL TTREEREE CCOMMUNITYOMMUNITY PPROJECTROJECT
The holidays are upon us and Tidewater ARMA Chapter members once again have the opportunity to spread good cheer to others
less fortunate than ourselves. The Angel Tree bags will be labeled with the item requested (shoes size x, shirt size x, etc.) and the
child’s age. The bags with their contents will be collected at the
December meeting.
November 8th is the deadline for members to
nominate a child in need. Of those submit-ted, four (4) children will be chosen. Please include, along with the child’s name and age,
information that may be helpful to the Com-mittee members in their selection process.
Please forward your nominations to the Char-itable Committee: Darlene Barber ([email protected]) or Lori Newell

Although all of my sessions were well-done, and I feel I left the
conference much more informed than before, the highlight for me was the opening keynote address. Frank Abagnale shared his life story. I had seen the film "Catch Me If You Can" years
ago, but it was nothing compared to hearing his story from his own lips. Abagnale is a gracious and humble man who lived an entire lifetime as a teenager and young adult, and is now count-
ing blessings he never imagined he would have: a loving wife,
successful children, and a fierce loyalty to his country.
Angie Diggs
I was blown away by the poignant story of Frank Abagnale’s life told from his perspective.
While we have progressed in records and information security and management since his “Catch Me If You Can” days, he brought realism to what we do and why we do it. He re-
minded me that we must continue to educate ourselves about privacy and records man-agement matters because of the importance of doing what we do
well.
Virginia A Jones, CRM, FAI
To my mind, the best thing I attended (I was only there through
Monday) was the opening presentation by Frank Abagnale (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in "Catch Me if You Can). His life story and his humble acceptance of what transpired was truly
inspirational. He spoke with confidence and humor and never glamourized his activities. In fact, he pointed out that what he did was illegal and he had expected to get caught eventually.
Tidewater Chapter Members attending comment on the high-
light of the Conference for them.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED RECORDS MANAGERS AND THE CRM
CREDENTIAL
The Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM), an international certifying body of and for professional records managers, began the process of issuing the CRM designation in 1975. The organization and the credential continues to be a valuable part of the Records and Information Management (RIM) community; an expanding interdisciplinary, global and diverse constituency. The ICRM serves as the official certifying body for both ARMA International and the Nuclear In-formation and Records Management Association (NIRMA).
The CRM credential provides a strong foundation of core skills and competencies for the RIM pro-fessional. It covers everything from general management principles, all aspects of recordkeeping from creation, management, control, storage and disposition, through in-depth areas of record-keeping technologies. In addition, CRM Candidates are required to put together the subject mat-ter knowledge they gain through preparation for the exams, by writing two business case studies that demonstrate their ability to apply and convey their knowledge to upper management, clients and other constituents.
