SHANDANDAN FLOWERS BLOOMING AND GORGEOUS-PA-PER-CUT ART EXHIBITION IN NORTHERN SHAANXI

The traditional paper-cut in northern Shaanxi is mainly di-vided into three categories in terms of connotation and function. The first category is to ward off evil spirits and pray for blessing; the second category is to breed and thrive; the third category is folk customs. While contemporary paper-cut artists in northern Shaanxi are creating, they incorporate the characteristics of the new era and their personal artistic pur-suits, thus forming a new look.

From June 20th, the Chinese Art Palace excavated the re-sources of the collection and planned to launch the “Sandan Danhua Blossoming Red-Northern Shaanxi Paper-cut Art Ex-hibition”, which fully presented the unique cultural charm of Xifu paper-cutting.

PARTICIPATION MYSTIQUE

Located inside a former paper machine factory, Ming Con-temporary Art Museum’s new exhibition merges psychoanal-ysis with art. 14 participating artists imagined themselves in a situation of great loss – whether it’s imaginary limb pain in Kader Attia’s photography or to step into the unconscious-ness in Marianna Simnett’s installation work. The artists use various sensory perception to tease out our desire, allowing us to be in touch with the pain and excitement of loss, ac-cident, damage and violence, thereby recognising the pro-found spiritual ties between us and the world.

WRITING AS THE FOUNTAINHEAD OF ALL ARTS

Liu Haisu, who wants to create a new era of Chinese art in harmony with China and the West, has a broad vision of traditional Chinese art and Western art. With the gradual sublimation of calligraphy, his art gradually shows a bold and magnificent style. In the early 1920s, Liu Haisu, as the young principal of the art college, chose Kang Youwei to learn callig-raphy to match the art of calligraphy of the times. . He uses Chinese as the body, draws in the paintings, and combines Chinese and Western paintings. He integrates the aesthetic understanding of Chinese calligraphy with the creative prac-tice of Chinese and Western paintings and the expanding social practice of modern art schools! Liu’s vision and book talents in his youth can be entered from his early years in Kang’s real life, and in his later years, he was wrapped up like a seal, scattered like grass, like a dragon, grabbed, like old The line quality of Fujipanqu changed, and eventually he con-trolled his oil paintings and Chinese paintings with his own unique calligraphic linearity, which obviously became the biggest background of the “Liu Haisu” Chinese and Western art blending!

RESONANCE – THE SEVENTH SHANGHAI DUOLUN YOUTH ART EXHIBITION

Selecting from 800 submissions, the exhibition shows vid-eos, installations, paintings and sculptures from 19 artists under the theme of resonance. Borrowing from the concept of physics that describes a phenomenon in which vibrating system forces another system around it to vibrate with great-er amplitude, the exhibition wants to use these artworks as ‘vibrating systems’ to connect the physical world with artists and viewers, creating a resonance that’s bigger than the art-works themselves. TRACES OF ACTIONS

In an era when relations of production are over-virtualized , the close connection between human beings and existing things is gradually weakened, replaced by the symbolized and standardized appeal to the explanation of production. It is a surrender to speed and time in an environment of ultra-effi-cient construction, and the result is ultimately the separation of the human body from the material. People thus forget how to “poetically inhabit”.

15 ARTISTS X 15 YEARS IN CHINA

As a sculptor with a high reputation in the contemporary art world, Li Chen’s sculptures solved many factors of contradic-tions and unification. Li Chen has a signature sculptural style that is unbound by the western modeling language; instead, he seeks to construct the discourse power of oriental sculp-ture through his practice. Discarding the complexity of artistic symbols, The Ethereal Cloud series endows the solid (sculp-ture) with clouds of smoke, and displays the energy and spirit of oriental philosophical thinking. The latest Ethereal Cloud painting series uses dense ink lines to create a native lan-guage, where the lines are transformed into images of rocks, characters and so on. It makes the works having a sponta-neous and natural form, which is unique, eccentric and in-finitely reproducing.

SHEN CHEN III: UNTITLED / THE WORKS SINCE THE 2000S

“ Shen Chen : I. Calligraphy / Abstract Ink Paintings from the 1980s” and “Shen Chen : II. Diaries / Experimental Acrylic Paintings from the 1990s ” have given the viewers a compre-hensive and thorough idea of Shen Chen’s practice during the 1980s when he had been experimenting with the mate-rial, the methodology and the concept of his works. In the 1980s, he focused on abstract ink paintings with calligraphic brushworks and lyrical expression; in the 1990s, he searched for minimal expression of the deeper and the more spiritual, taking on water-based acrylic on canvas. Shen Chen’s practice situates between Eastern and Western culture. He explores brushstrokes, materials, lines, structure and order, construct-ing a rational ground in his works with a Western point of view. He investigates the idea of time, space, overlap and revelation, in all the spiritual aspect of the work with a specif-ically Eastern sentiment.

MUTE, ZHU YU’S THIRD SOLO EX-HIBITION

“Mute” is a principle of action followed by the artist. The choice to remain completely silent implies a practice that re-jects all systemic support and conceptual validation. “Mute” is also the artist’s operational mode in the real world. Like a submarine lurking quietly beneath the sea, turning itself into a “void” to human detection technology, which is the only way it can achieve the ideal state under which to carry out its mission. For this reason, Mute is also an exhibition that eschews text and speech. It does not provide any artist state-ment, critical interpretation, artwork labels or any other form of guidance to the exhibition.

MEDITATIONS IN AN EMERGENCY

From May 21 to August 30, 2020, UCCA Center for Contem-porary Art presents the group exhibition “Meditations in an Emergency.” The exhibition emerges in the wake of the pan-demic which has created the first truly global moment of the twenty-first century. As it marks UCCA’s reopening after the longest closure in its history, since late January, the exhibition looks to art as a source of solace, reflection, and solidarity. Structured in five sections—focused on everyday life, the body and biopolitics, the human/animal dichotomy, migration and borders, and the information landscape—the exhibition includes works by 26 artists. These engage with the currents that have led to our present circumstances, and what futures we might find in the aftermath. The exhibition takes its title from an anthology of poetry by Frank O’Hara (1926-1966), better known during his short life as a curator at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. As O’Hara wrote in one of the in-cluded poems, “In times of crisis, we must all decide again and again whom we love.”
